Two British teachers have broken the world record for the longest journey in a tuk-tuk after pulling their failing vehicle for 43 miles. Richard Sears and Nick Gough traveled 37,500 kilometers around the world and passed through 37 countries. They did this to support the grass-roots education project in Africa, Asia and South America.
The pair, who set off from London, thought their expedition was over when the vehicle started to fail. When the tuk-tuk broke, they were only 70 kilometers away from their destination. They decided to pull it the rest of the way. The tuk-tuk, which weighs 800 kilograms, was pulled in turn by Richard and Nick over three days. On arrival in Chepen, Peru, they discovered a mechanic who specialized in tuk-tuks and managed to fix it.
The pair were back on the road aiming for their next goal. Along their journey they had to tackle deserts and jungles. They also survived close encounters with elephants in Uganda and Botswana and an accident in Malaysia. The greatest hardship on the tuk-tuk was the mountain ranges lying in their path, including the Alps, the Himalayas and the Andes.
Nick and Richard uncovered some inspirational projects across Africa, Asia and South America. They witnessed firsthand the educational challenges facing these areas today. They joined street children in the slums of Cairo, Khartoum, Kampala, Mumbai and Phnom Penh. They visited Congolese refugees(难民) in camps in Eastern Burundi. They witnessed how education could free sex-workers in Delhi and victims of human trafficking in Nepal.
The pair established The Tuk Tuk Educational Trust, a U.K. registered charity.
Talking about their motivation, Richard said, “The world's leaders have made a commitment to achieving universal primary education but, in spite of this pledge(誓言,承诺), over 57 million primary-aged children worldwide are still out of school; many more are in school, but still cannot access quality learning opportunities.”
24. Why did the two teachers travel around the world
A. To support an education project.
B. To create a new world record.
C. To entertain themselves.
D. To challenge themselves.
25. How far did the two teachers pull the tuk-tuk each day on average
A. A little more than 30 kilometers.
B. About 14 miles.
C. 43 miles.
D. 70 kilometers.
26. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. How they realized their next goal.
B. Their exciting experience on the road.
C. The beautiful scenery of famous mountains.
D. The difficulties and dangers they faced in the journey.
27. Which of the following best describes the two teachers
A. Curious and brave.
B. Humorous and generous.
C. Courageous and responsible.
D. Efficient and honest.

Doctors in hospital emergency rooms often see accidental poisonings. A frightened parent arrives with a child who swallowed a cleaning liquid. Or perhaps the harmful substance is a medicine. Or it might be a chemical product meant to kill insects. These are common causes of accidental poisoning
In cases like this, seek medical help as soon as possible. Save the container of whatever caused the poisoning. And look on the container for information about anything that stops the effects of the poison. Save anything expelled from the mouth of the victim. That way, doctors can examine it.
In the past, some people forced poisoning victims to empty the stomach. They need a liquid syrup of ipecac(催呕剂) to do this. But an organization of children’s doctors no longer advises parents to keep syrup(糖浆) of ipecac. The American Academy of Pediatrics says some poisons can cause additional damage when they come back up the throat.
Millions of people know a way to save a person who is choking on something trapped in the throat. The method is commonly known as the Heimlich Manoeuvre or abdominal thrusts(腹部按压), which you can do by getting directly behind a sitting or standing person. Put your arms around the victim's waist. Close one hand to form a ball. Place it over the upper part of the stomach below the ribs. Place the other hand on top. Then push forcefully inward and upward. Repeat the abdominal thrusts until the object is expelled from the mouth. For someone who is pregnant or very fat. place your hands a little higher than with normal abdominal thrusts.
Red Cross experts say taking these steps can save many lives. But they also warn that abdominal thrusts are not for people who have almost drowned. They say the use of the method could delay other ways to re-start breathing in the victim. Abdominal thrust should be used only in cases where a near-drowning victim is choking on an object.
To learn more about first aid, ask a hospital or organization like a Red Cross or Red Crescent Society for information. There may be training classes offered in your area. If you know first aid methods, you can be calmer and more helpful in case of emergency.
28. Which of the following is NOT the common cause of accidental poisonings
A. A harmful medicine. B. A cleaning liquid.
C. Poisonous insects. D. Dangerous pesticide.
29. Which is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “expelled” in Paragraph 2
A. coming out B. taking up
C. going away D. getting down
30. What is the author's purpose in writing this text
A. To warn people to avoid accidental poisonings.
B. To provide a short medical guide to first aid.
C. To show how to perform abdominal thrusts.
D. To help people deal with accidental poisonings.

Last week when I was reading at home, my younger sister rushed in and told me an old man was lying on the round in front of our building. I immediately took my first-aid kit and ran downstairs. He was suffering a slight heart attack. And I performed CPR on him. Luckily. an ambulance came soon and he was taken to hospital. Later that day I was told by the hospital what I did helped rescue the old man's life. 31 However, at the same time I fell a bit sad. There were many people who wanted to help around the old man then. Yet no one performed first aid on him as they hadn't attended a first-aid course. About a half-mile behind our Minnesota farm lay a pond. In summer, my brother Harry and I would run through a stand of oak trees to skip stones there. The pond wore a collar of black mud. It was not a place for swimming.
In late summer, the pond would be covered by a green and bubbly scum(起泡的渣). Sometimes a strong, unpleasant smell rose from it. We stayed away.
When winter came, the pond was once again an inviting place. One day when ice covered it, Harry said to me, “Try walking across.”
The ice looked solid. No water showed through it, but I hesitated. “Go ahead.” Harry urged. “Try it. You're lighter than I am. If the ice holds, we can run and slide carefully on it. It’ll be fun.” I wanted to please Harry, and I thought about the fun of a long slide on the ice. I began to slide across the pond.
In the middle of the pond. the ice gave way with a sudden crack(裂缝)! I stretched out(伸展)my arms. The next thing I knew I was hanging on to the edge of a hole in the ice by arms outstretched on the ice. From my shoulders down I hung in icy water. I thought of the bottom of the pond. I knew it would be black and awful down there, full of mud and maybe rotting creatures.
I tried to climb out of the hole. but when I got a knee on the ice, it broke like window glass. Again and again I tried to get out. Again and again the ice broke into pieces. The hole widened. I was
wearing a coat of heavy material. As it became completely wet, it dragged me down. I was tired of the struggle and rested with my arms stretched out on the ice.
I looked at Harry on shore. He seemed rooted to the spot. “I can't get out!” I screamed when I caught some breath.

Dear Jack,
How is it going I’m writing to invite you to participate in a training course organized by the Red Cross of our city.
The course is to be held in our school hall next week, which centeres on/focuses on/is about first aid knowledge. I think it is necessary for students to attend the course. Not only does it help us have a knowledge of first aid, but we can also offer help when others get injured or face any emergency.
It’s such a useful course that lots of students have already sign up for it. If you’re interested, please let me know. I’m looking forward to your participation.

Paragraph 1: He turned and ran from the pond. Staring at his familiar figure out of sight, I wondered, “Is he running for help, or is he running away and leaving me sliding to the bottom ” After what seemed to be centuries of waiting, I was on the edge of collapse. Suddenly, Harry came back with a branch, which was large, black, and v-shaped. He pushed the branch toward me. I grabbed it immediately and was eventually dragged out of the icy water by Harry. What a narrow escape! We stumbled home, with my clothes dripping water.
Paragraph 2: The moment I crashed through the kitchen door, sobbing, mum rushed over. She helped me take off my coat, and gave me a quick bath then passed me a cup of milk to warm me up. I tearfully complained to her about all that had happened and Harry was blamed for getting
me sibling into such a trouble. His head drooping, Harry murdered an apology to me. I was comforted and relieved, but in fact, the pond was still attractive to young Harry and me, especially when winter came again.
Text 1
W: Be sure to wear a jacket. I thought I heard thunder earlier.
M: That must have just been Dad shutting the door. There's not a cloud in the sky
Text 2
W: My friend has started making furniture of wood. I was thinking about ordering a new table 2
from her.
M: We don’t have any space. If you want a table, you need to sell those chairs that we never use. Text 3
M: That was a horrible tackle. I don't understand why he wasn't shown a red card and marched
straight off
W: I think it was fine. He got the ball. The other player dived and made it look worse.
Text 4
W: So you write what is commonly known as Young Adult literature.
M: Yes. I mean all ages can enjoy my books, but it's primarily aimed at people in high school.
Text 5
W: Oh hey! It's late for you to be here - working on the term paper
M: Yes, it's due so soon, so I've been here since class ended. And you
W: I’m looking for a couple of books and I also have to return this one.
Text 6
M: I like your dress, is it new
W: You obviously haven't been watching me. I've been wearing it for weeks.
M: Well, something is different.
W: Try my bag.
M: Is it your bag
W: No.
M: Ah, I know now. I didn't look at your feet.
W: Do you like them
M: I do. Shoes like that are in fashion, aren't they And the yellow matches your dress.
W: And my bag, for that matter.
M: Yes. You've like a ray of sunshine. That's why I noticed you. You stand out from all the reds and blues around here.
W: If you can't dress like this in the summer, when can you do it
Text 7
M: Have you met the new team member
W: Yes. I can't believe they replaced Gary with a robot.
M: I mean it's very cute, but do they honestly think a machine can do the job better than a human
W: I know I would understand if it was labor like working in a factory, but how can it replace an accountant
M: I wonder if this is a joke, like one of those TV shows with hidden cameras.
W: Unfortunately, it's definitely real. I wonder who will be next for the change.
M: Well. I can't see them replacing you. Robots can't write very well.
W: You say that now, but who knows, maybe they will soon. My sister works for an A1 company.
M: So she's to blame.
W: Honestly, some of the things she tells me are scary.
Text 8
W: Are they the new plans from the architects
M: Yes, they just arrived at 9:00am.
W: That was two hours ago!
M: Nobody told me what to do with them.
W: Sorry. Can you take them straight to Mike They were meant to be here yesterday before noon.
M: Is he okay I heard he was angry and shouted at one of the employees earlier.
W: He was just under a significant amount of stress. Usually we build houses or office blocks, but landing this contract to build a bridge is a big deal for us.
M: I imagine the fact that it is connecting two countries only adds to that.
W: Exactly. It's being called a step towards peace in the press, so he needs to make sure the bridge is a symbol for that peace.
M: In that case, I’ll take him a cup of tea along with the plans.
W: I wouldn’t bother. He has given up tea. Coffee too. He’ll probably appreciate some fruit juice, though.
M: Say no more. There's some orange juice in the fridge.
Text9
W: I love the colors of autumn. All the leaves turn orange and yellow and red.
M: Yes, I got a great photo yesterday150 people liked it and nearly 100 people shared it. Does that mean I'm famous on social media
W: Unfortunately not. A recent study said you have to get 1,000 people to like your posts online for you to be considered a celebrity.
M: Oh well, only 850 away!
W: Is that mainly why you take pictures
M: What No, not just like to share them, so my friends and family can see them. If other people like them, that's a bonus.
W: Have you ever thought about doing it professionally
M: No, but I have submitted some pictures to competitions and won
W: That's amazing. You have a really good eye. I can't wait to see what you shoot in winter when it snows.
M: I'll probably get a cold Last year I took lots of night photos but was very ill.
W: Sounds like you should invest in a warm hat then.
M: Thankfully my birthday is in November, so I’ll add it to my list.
Text 10
M: I’m sad to say that today's match will be the last one I take charge of It has been an honor guiding Toronto FC over the last two seasons. I want to thank the owners for putting their trust in an Englishman to come to Canada and make an impact in a relatively new league. I want to thank the United States Soccer Federation for taking Major League Soccer from strength to strength, building a huge fan base around the world. My reasons for leaving have
nothing to do with the club but rather personal reasons. My family have been missing me and I also miss them, and l now feel it is a good time to say goodbye. I was put at ease while making my decision when the owners asked to draw up a short list of replacements, as I leave knowing that whoever they choose, you will be in good hands. To my players, thank you for giving me your all for 90 minutes during every game. There have been highs and lows, but you have been stars throughout it all, and I will continue to watch you from across the pond. Paragraph 2:
The moment I crashed through the kitchen door, sobbing, mum rushed over.
1 What was my mum’s first reaction
2 What lesson did I learn from the experience
That day impressed a lifelong lesson on me ― Always stay away from potential risks and bear in mind that curiosity kills cats.
As life has it, not until we encounter something adventurous will we be aware of precious warnings.
The pond was still so inviting to young Harry and me, especially when winter came again.
I was temporarily comforted and relieved but I would never forget the life-risking experience and never act so blindly again.
A story is an accident, which begins with a problem and ends with a solution.
A good story often has a good theme.
A better story “shows more than tells”.
A great story displays details properly.

Para. 1
He turned and ran from the pond. Staring at his familiar figure out of sight, I wondered: “Is he running for help, or is he running away and leaving me sliding to the bottom ” Dismay and scare beat me out of breath. The icy water pierced my skin with needle-like chill. I was anxious to climb out by myself, but countless previous failures froze me from struggling again. After what seemed to be centuries of fruitless waiting, I was on the verge of collapse. Just at that moment, here dashed Harry with a large, black, V-shaped oak branch. Flopping to his stomach, he pushed the branch before him and wriggled toward me. The moment a slender top branch was within reach, I grabbed it immediately and was eventually dragged out of the icy water by Harry. What a narrow escape! We stumbled home, with my clothes dripping(滴水)and my overshoes squishing(发出嘎吱声) and squirting(喷出) water.

Para. 2:
I crashed through the kitchen door, sobbing, mum rushed over. Unbuttoning my coat, and stripping(脱去) my clothes from me, she gave me a quick bath and then nimbly wrapped a thick blanket over me to stop my teeth-chattering chill; meanwhile she gave me a cup of milk to warm me up. I tearfully complained to her about all that had happened and Harry was lectured about getting a younger sibling into such a trouble. His head drooping, Harry murmured an apology to me. I was temporarily comforted and relieved but in fact, the pond was still a permanent temptation to young Harry and me, especially when winter came again.
