Things were not going well for David McCartney on the evening of January 9th, 2006. David McCartney, the father of two, was running late to a meeting, and had been stopped for a speeding ticket. But the delay(延误)put him right where he needed to be when Elizabeth Testerman’s car ran out of the road, catching fire and bursting into flames(着火). Thinking fast, MeCartney called 911 and ran to Testerman’s car and pulled her out from the car with the help from two others. “I got to save a life,” says McCartney. “So it would end up being a pretty good day.”
That life-changing event led to a longtime friendship with Testerman, who encouraged him to continue to do good things for other people. In 2019, her message inspired McCartney, a distance runner, to donate his kidney(肾脏)to a stranger before death. Since then, McCartney’s goal has been to run 50-plus-mile marathons in his own state to increase awareness about knowing kidney disease, and also raise money for Team Mason. It is a local organization that brings people’s awareness of kidney disease.
Though McCartney had donated one of his kidneys, he also had to accept the fact that he never got to meet the person who received his kidney, because he or she chose to remain anonymous. “I would have liked to shake his or her hands,” he explains. “But you can’t know what the person is going through.”
After he recovered from his donating kidney, McCartney finally got back to run—but this time, with a new purpose. “We’re trying to get people involved in all the states.” says McCartney. “We’ve got to take this platform as far as we can.” “It’s a big business,” adds McCartney. “But if the sun is shining, we’re running.”

In the past decades, TV advertising(广告)has been one of the most powerful forms of advertisement. Basically it is a mixture of both video and sound advertising messages. Some people believe that TV advertising is more powerful than other advertising means such as magazines, websites, radio stations, and newspapers. Television was once considered to be the “king” of advertising media at a time.
A TV advertising company always tries to catch the attention of as many people as possible. And TV advertising conquers its viewers for various reasons. It allows a product to reach a large number of people, both at local as well as at national levels. In addition, it takes a short time for a product to reach the public as well. TV advertising can target (瞄准)a large number of local families with local cable(有线电视)network channels and independent stations. Various audience like housewives, young people and children are targeted through different channels like TV series, cartoons, shopping programme, etc. Before a product is advertised on TV, complete market research is done in order to know the needs of various customers to the product. Then TV helps get more detailed message with sounds, images and actions rapidly across to TV viewers, providing easier choices to the customers to choose the desired product.
Although we admit the fact that TV advertising works better over others in many aspects, TV advertising are not always the best choice for both companies and viewers. It has its negative(消极的)side sometimes. TV advertising is usually short, thus they do not express much information about the product. Besides, making TV advertising involves complicated steps. Producing it involves hiring an advertising agency, video editors, actors and writers, so an advertising agency need to think over the high expense of making TV advertising. Therefore, TV advertising with rich sounds, images and actions can mislead or persuade people to buy some products they don’t really need.

A. Positive. B. Objective. C. Confused. D. Doubtful.
31. What may be the best title for the text
A. Is TV advertising out of date nowadays B. TV advertising is the most expensive of all!
C. TV advertising has both positive and negative sides D. Pay attention to the misleading TV advertising!

A shark attacked a 14-year-old girl near a Florida beach on Saturday, though a surfer tried to save her. The surfer pulled the girl from bloody water and frightened the shark away with his fists(拳头).
Can sharks really smell blood in the water Yes. Sharks have a good sense of smell, and blood happens to be a very attractive smell. Sharks also use sight and hearing to discover their food. In particular, hungry sharks like to hear the sounds which are made by swimming fish. They also look for something bright. Attacks on people can sometimes be a case of mistaken recognition. Sometimes, a shark could confuse shining stones for food.
The sharks’ eyes, ears, and nose are all near their mouth. But sharks also search for their food with sensory receptors(感受器). These receptors can feel any movement in the water. When a shark gets very close to a food, it can use electroreceptive organs(电觉器官), which sit the wall of little holes on the shark’s nose. Living things in salty seawater produce a weak electrical field(电磁场)that the shark can feel at a short distance, so it allows the shark to find out creatures that bury themselves in the sea floor. Muscle(肌肉)movements also produce little electrical fields that a shark can feel.
The surfer who tried to save the girl said he protected himself by frightening away the shark with his fists. Is that a good idea Some experts think frightening away a shark with fists should only be the last choice. It won’t be wise for you to stay still in water. Swimming away rapidly seems to be a better choice. If you can’t swim away right away, hit the shark on the face or nose—where it has a high concentration of sensory receptors like humans—to drive off your attacker and give you enough time to escape. When you are beside a shark’s face, try sticking your finger in its eyes.
32. Which of the following helps sharks search for food
A. Swimming quietly. B. A special kind of blood.
C. Working as a team. D. A good sense of smell.
33. What can we infer from paragraph 3
A. Sharks can feel movements from other creatures in seawater.
B. Sharks use sensory receptor more than smell to search for food.
C. Sharks can’t feel weak muscle movements from other creatures.
D. Sharks can’t find and attack creatures hiding in the sea floor.
34. What are we advised to do when we are attacked by a shark
A. Shout loudly and frighten it away. B. Get away from it immediately.
C. Touch the shark’s face gently. D. Stay still to pretend to be dead.
35. Which section of a website is the text most probably taken from
A. Environment. B. Sport. C. Science. D. Health.

Simplicity is a lifestyle that takes away the unimportant things in your life. It removes or changes those things that cause you to feel stressed out, and allows you to absolutely focus on what’s important. Of course, no one can suddenly lead a simple life. 36 . Here are three excellent reasons.
37 . Unfortunately, it’s easy for us to fall into the comparison trap. Studies show that comparison may cause pressure, depression and anxiety. When you live a life of simplicity, you’ll feel a rebirth of the soul. You’ll definitely know what’s important and what isn’t, and focus on things that make you happy.
Simplicity helps you feel content and happy. 38 . It gives you a strong sense of freedom and warmth. When you lead a simple life, you tend to feel satisfied with who you are and your situation in life. It doesn’t mean you’re not hard-working or interested in improving your life. Content people aren’t driven by an unhealthy schedule. They do what they need to do peacefully. When you’re satisfied, you don’t care if what you’re doing is popular or what society says you should do. 39 .
Simplicity helps you enjoy small things. When you choose to live a simple lifestyle, you’ll slow down your life and enjoy its little moments in an absolutely new way. 40 . Remember, though life is hard sometimes, slow down your life and enjoy little things that can bring you joy.
A. Contentment is a satisfying calm

Last week, I watched an old couple when they walked through a local thrift(节俭)store. I had just dropped off a bag of clothes and a few other items I no longer wanted. When I got the opportunity, I stopped by just to look through the old records. Yes, I called them records, not CDs or MP3s, simply records, those round plastic things from ancient times that had music recorded on them.
Anyway, this couple moved slowly around me in search of items they had on a list they held tight in hand. They didn’t say much, but occasionally talked with the other and picked an item up. “No, it’s not suitable for her and she dislikes it,” one would say and move on.
My curiosity always got the best of me until I satisfied it by asking. “Can I help you find something ” I asked. They stopped, looking at me. Then the man said. “We are looking for old things that look new. Look, every new year in the past we tried to begin the year with new things. It was a goal to surround ourselves with things fresh and new so that we had new direction, new hopes and dreams for the year ahead. More importantly, we can give some gifts to Eva.”
“Eva Who is she ” I asked. “She is a lovely 10-year-old girl we adopted three years ago. Her parents died in a serious traffic accident. She always wants to be a singer,” the man replied. When hearing those words, I felt sad and said, “I’m sorry for the girl. Can you tell me how does your search work out ” The lady sighed and said, “It took a long time for us to find a special gift, but we discovered it was in vain(徒劳的).”
I knew it’s difficult for the couple to solve the problem, so I decided to take action immediately. I said to the couple. “I can do you a favor. Please wait here for me.”

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. W: Stop apologizing, Steve, and use that phone to get me a taxi. I think I need to see a doctor.
M: Who will teach us now

W: Today I’m going to talk about the umbrella. We all know that we put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But the umbrella was not invented as a protection against rain. It was first used as a shade against the sun. Nobody knows who first invented it. But the umbrella was used in very ancient times. When it first appeared in Egypt, it was used only by the rich as a symbol of their power. In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella. During the middle ages, however, the umbrella almost disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the 16th century and later in France and in England. Gradually, most European countries began to use the umbrella. During all this time, umbrellas have not changed much in style, but they do become much lighter.

Good afternoon, everyone!
What is known to all is that all the animals play a part in keeping the balance of nature. Unfortunately, many wild animals are facing the danger of extinction. The reasons are various. On one hand, the environment that they are living in has been greatly destroyed. On the other hand, they are being over hunted.
So we must take measures to protect them. We should raise our awareness of animal protection. Besides, let’s make every effort to protect animals’ living environment.
I hope we can live in harmony with animals. Let’s take action.
That’s all. Thanks for your listening.
第二节
One possible version:
I turned around and ran out of the store. I knew I should go home to find something to help the couple. Then, I took a taxi. On the way home, I was thinking what I could give the girl as a gift. For me, the only hobby was music. So I thought I could give something about music as a gift, maybe a record. After arriving home, I found an old record which was given by my grandparents when I was ten years old. I believed Eva would love it.
When I returned to the store, the couple sat near the counter(柜台). Seeing me, they waved to me. I ran to them with the record in my hand. The man was surprised and asked me where I had gone. I gave them the record and told them, “This is a gift from my grandparents, and now it belongs to Eva.” The couple felt happy and showed their appreciation to me. Although the record meant a lot to me, I knew it would light up the girl’s sky. I felt proud of what I had done.
