There are many reasons why I encourage(鼓励)people to travel, and I know that the experience(经历)will make one a better person.

Enjoy exploring(探索)the different cultures, and you will also find that people are different in some of the things they do and how they live.
One thing you may find out is that there are problems all over the world. We can’t just help them by giving money to them because money is not everything. People in need should be given a chance, which is more important than just be given money.
On your journey you will meet lots of new friends. Talking to strangers and finding about their lives is a great way to spend your time. You will certainly be more confident after having to deal with problems and make many decisions along the way.

In May 1804, Lewis and Clark led the Corps of Discovery to begin the journey on the Missouri River. Lewis’ main job was to lead the men on the ship. And anyway, he needed to make maps of the geography of the unknown land. As for Clark, he usually studied plants and animals along the way.
As the trip continued, one of their men became ill and died. They also had to do their best to find food and stay healthy during the winter months.
Sacagawea, a Native American, joined the Corps of Discovery in the winter of 1804. What she knew about Native American culture and her ability to speak different Native American languages made the journey much easier. Thanks to her, trade with Native Americans began.
Lewis and Clark reached the Pacific Ocean after traveling through several rivers, including the Clearwater River, Snake River and Columbia River. However, they did not find one direct (直接的) waterway that could lead boats straight to the Pacific from the Mississippi. Still, the journey was a big success.

On my first round-the-world trip in 2006, I planned everything out before the trip. I knew where I was going, staying for how long, and how I would get there. And then half-way through I ditched the plan and went with the flow (随大流). Over the years, how I plan my travel has changed. Now, I’m a last-minute planner and seldom travel with any plan.
Traveling without a plan gives you great flexibility (灵活性). Since nothing is booked far before the trip, you can turn to something different when you change your mind or something better comes along. I changed my plans to meet a friend on an island in Thailand and stayed for a month. I wouldn’t have had that experience if I had kept to my plan.
However, most new travelers are the opposite — they over plan their trips. They make plans for every day, sometimes even for every hour. Two days here, three hours there. I understand why people do that. When time is short, you want to see as much as possible. You don’t want to waste a single second.
But in travel, less is more. Spending more time in one place allows you to get a better feel for
the rhythm (节奏) of life. You can visit more relaxedly, see more than just the interesting places, and spend your time on the happy accidents of travel.
When I first made my travel plan, I tried to include everything in it. Then I realized it was hard to make it come true, and changed my plan. I came up with a list of just one or two things I want to see each day. It’s an important lesson to learn. I think the best trip plan is to work out the general path you want to take, book the first few nights of your trip, and let your travels begin from there. This way you are never locked into a certain place if your feelings change.

The tourist trade is booming. With all this coming and going, you’d expect greater understanding to develop between the nations of the world. Not a bit of it! Superb systems of communication by air, sea and land make it possible for us to visit each other’s countries at a moderate cost. What was once the “grand tour’’, reserved for only the very rich, is now within everybody’s grasp. The package tour and chartered flights are not to be sneered at. Modern travelers enjoy a level of comfort which the lords and ladies on grand tours in the old days couldn’t have dreamed of. But what’s the sense of this mass exchange of populations if the nations of the world remain basically ignorant of each other
Many tourist organizations are directly responsible for this state of affairs. They deliberately set out to protect their clients from too much contact with the local population. The modern tourist leads a cosseted, sheltered life. He lives at international hotels where he eats his international food and sips his international drink while he gazes at the natives from a distance. Conducted tours to
places of interest are carefully censored. The tourist is allowed to see only what the organizers want him to see and no more. A strict schedule makes it impossible for the tourist to wander off on his own; and anyway, language is always a barrier, so he is only too happy to be protected in this way.
The sad thing about this situation is that it leads to the persistence of national stereotypes. We don’t see the people of other nations as they really are, but as we have been brought up to believe they are. You can test this for yourself. Take five nationalities, say, French, German, English, American and Italian. Now in your mind, match them with these five adjectives: musical, amorous, cold, pedantic, native. Far from providing us with any insight into the national characteristics of the peoples just mentioned, these adjectives actually act as barriers. So when you set out on your travels, the only characteristics you notice are those which confirm your preconceptions. You come away with the highly unoriginal and inaccurate impression that, say, “Anglo-Saxons are hypocrites’’ of that “Latin peoples shout a lot’’. You only have to make a few foreign friends to understand how absurd and harmful national stereotypes are. But how can you make foreign friends when the tourist trade does its best to prevent you
Carried to an extreme, stereotypes can be positively dangerous. Wild generalizations stir up racial hatred and blind us to the basic fact—how trite it sounds! That all people are human. We are all similar to each other and at the same time all unique.
39.What is the main idea of this passage
A.Tourism contributes nothing to increasing understanding between nations.
B.The stereotypes of people lead to racism.
C.Conducted tour is dull.
D.Tourism has developed at a fast pace.
40.What is the author’s attitude toward tourism
A.Neutral B.Negative C.Critical D.appreciative

A.Modern tourists are lucky because of those efficient means of transportation.
B.Modern tourists are “protected” too much.
C.Modern tourists get to know foreign countries better.
D.Modern tourists stay indoors too much.
42.The purpose of the writer is to________.
A.inform us of the possible ways to travel
B.persuade us to change the way of travelling
C.entertain us with some travel adventures
D.suggest an alternative of enhancing the understanding between nations
43.What is “grand tour” now
A.It is still very expensive.
B.It’s still tiring and uncomfortable.
C.Package tour made it less attractive.
D.Everybody can enjoy the “grand tour”
