1) begin v. (began) 开始
e.g. I’ll begin whenever you’re ready.
你什么时候准备好我就开始。
常用的句型:
begin to do与begin doing
一般来说,begin to do和begin doing可
以互换,但在以下三种情况下,用to do。
主语不是指人,而是it等。
如:It began to rain.
begin后接表示心理活动的词。如:begin to know, 还有believe, wonder, think等词。
begin本身是ing形式,为避免重复后接to do。 即:beginning to do
2) heavily adv. 在很大程度上;大量地
e.g. moving heavily 吃力地移动

Where were you when the rainstorm came I was in/ on/ at the …. Skill objectives:The students can use the questions to get information to improve their listening and speaking abilities. 2. To train the students’ cooperation with their partners. Emotional objectives:To train the students to care about others and foster friendly human relationship through talking about the past experience. Thinking quality objectives: How to improve speaking and listening skills.
重点 The past Progressive Tense (was/ were doing ). Note its grammar meaning and use “what” questions to ask about the past activities.
难点 The students can ask questions to get information to improve their listening and speaking abilities.
Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Lead in 1.Watch the video about the rainstorm. 2. Show some on the screen some grammar explanations for the new tense. 1. Students watch a flash about the Past Progressive Tense. 2. Students to read and learn the sentences on the screen. 1. Get Ss to know some new Grammar meaning of this new tense. 2. Get the students to identify main clause from “when” subordinate clause.
Step 2 Revision Teacher shows on the screen some activity pictures and revises the Present Continuous Tense. Students ask and answer in pairs, A: What’s he/she doing B: He’s/She’s …ing. Get the students to revise the Present Progressive Tense and get read for the new tense.
Step 3 Presentation & talk Show on the screen some pictures and learn the new verb tense. 1. Practice the conversations with the partners. A: What was he/she doing B: He/She was …ing. 2. Change the pronouns and go on talking. A: What were you doing when the rainstorm came B: I was …ing. A: Where were you when… B: I was in/on/at the …. Get the students to use the new tense in a proper way. Pay attention to the time in the sentence.
Step 4 Activity 1a 1. Get the students to read through the pictures in Activity 1a and match. 2. Get them to read and recite the phrases. Read and match the statements with the right picture. Read and recite the place phrases. Have a pairwork. A: Where were you when… B: I was in/on/at the …. To train Ss’ listening skills by catching the key words(verb/place). Pay attention to the prepositions “in/on/at”.
Step 5 Listening Get the students to listen and circle the correct responses. Listen again and listen and repeat after the tape. 1. Listen and circle the correct responses. 2. Listen again and try to understand key sentences in the listening material. To train Ss’ listening skills by catching the key words(verb/place).
Step 6 Pair work Get the students to have a pairwork, talking about the activities of different people in the picture. Show on the Screen some other pictures and go on the above talk. 1. Read through the dialogue in Activity 1c and talk about what the people in 1a were doing at the time of the rainstorm. 2. Practice the conversations with the partners. A: What was he/she doing when the rainstorm came B: He/She was …ing. A: Where was he/she when… B: He/She was in/on/at the …. To learn the verb tense by consolidating the sentences Ss have learned. Imitate and make their concept of the Past Progressive Tense
Step 7 Grammar Summary Summarize the new tense today. Show on the screen some Chinese explanations for it. Students read and learn the verb tense rules. 含义: 表示过去某个时刻正在进行的动作。 结构: was /were doing 例句:I was cooking dinner when the rainstorm came. I was doing my homework at the time of the rainstorm. … Help the students to foster a brief and clear mind map for this new tense.
