1. 基本概念
过去进行时表示在过去某一时刻或一段时间内正在进行的动作。这一特定的过去时间除有上下文暗示以外, 一般用时间状语来表示。
2. 结构
was / were + 动词-ing
过去进行时
例如:
A: What were you doing at eight last night
昨晚八点你在干什么?
B: I was taking a shower.
我(当时)在淋浴。
A: What was he doing when the rainstorm came 暴风雨来的时候他在干什么?
B: He was reading in the library when the rainstorm came. 暴风雨来的时候他在图书馆看书。

3. 句式(以work为例)

教材分析 本课时主要学习过去进行时语法。
学习 目标与核心素养 Knowledge objectives: pick up, strange, wake up, be busy doing sth Ability objectives: The students can use the “when/while” clause to tell a past story. To change the “when/while” clause into each other. Emotional objectives: To train the students to care about others and foster friendly human relationship through talking about the past experience. Help others through telephones. Thinking quality objectives: How to improve grammar.
重点 I was … ing when what …. happened. While I was …ing, what … happened.
难点 Learn the “so … that” result adverbial clause. I was so busy looking for the umbrella that I didn’t see a car coming.
Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Enjoy a song Try to get the lyrics. Students watch and learn. Try to make notes if necessary and answer the teacher’s questions. Train their good listening habits.

Step 3 Guessing game Show on the screen a picture of Rod Stewart. Have a guessing game. A: Was he …ing B: Yes, he was./ No, he wasn’t. Help to revise the Affirmative and Negative answers for the question.
Step 4 Presentation Show on the screen some pictures and go on talking about Rod’s terrible day. Get the students to watch and learn some irregular verb past forms. Try to narrate properly with “when/while”. Help to present some useful expressions in 2a. Pay attention to the use of “when/while” in the sentence.
Step 5 Listening Finish off the listening tasks in Activity 2a/2b. 1. Listen and number the pictures in Activity 2a. 2. Listen again and fill in the blanks with the right words/phrases. 3. Turn to the tapescript and get the students to listen and repeat. Underline some useful expressions. With the help of pictures, try to train Ss’ listening skills by catching the key words. Pay attention to the “so … that” sentence structure.
Step 6 Activity 2c Get the students to have a dialogue like the one in 2c. A (TV reporter) interviews B(the boy in 2a) about his terrible day. Read through the information in 2a/2b. Make up a dialogue between the boy and a TV reporter. Help to practice asking and answering a past story. Pay attention to use “when/while” right.
Step 7 Grammar Explanation Summarize the use of “when/while”. Show on the screen some pictures and get the students to make up sentences with “when/while”. Get the students to learn the rules of “when/while”. 1)一种状态/地点+ when +what happened 2) what was happening + when + what happened 3)While what was happening, + what happened 4)While what was happening, + what was happening Help the students to learn how to change “when/while” sentence into each other.
Step 8 Activity 2d Get the students to have a fast reading practice. Read the dialogue in 2d and answer the four questions shown on the screen. 2. Role-play the conversation. Help the students to deepen the concept of the Past Progressive Tense in a concrete situation.
