第一节
Dear David,
I’d like to ask you to write an article for our school’s English newspaper.
The “Overseas Cultures” section in our newspaper is very popular among us students. It
carries articles written by foreign friends about the cultures of their home countries. Would you please write something about the culture in your country And we would especially welcome articles about how Canadians spend their holidays and festivals, and the life of Canadian high school students. You can write anything relevant so long as it’s interesting and informative. 400 words would be fine. Could we have your article before June 28
I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1: Everyone was sad when they left Pinky at the pond, even Sara’s father. But he tried to convince Sara that Pinky was fine. Walking towards the car, Sara looked over her shoulder and saw Pinky standing alone. The other ducks were swimming around in circles, looking at Pinky. To Sara, it seemed that they were trying to identify the strange animal. They didn’t recognize Pinky as a duck. Worried about Pinky, Sara dreamed of Pinky being bullied by other ducks the whole night.
Paragraph 2: The next morning, when looking out of the kitchen window, Sara couldn’t believe her eyes! There was Pinky, happily walking around on the grass. Thrilled at what she saw, she kept asking herself, “How did she make it ” After all, it was two miles away and she managed to walk back through the city street. Incredible! But her parents drove Pinky back to the pond again regardless of her request. The following morning, there was Pinky again on the grass! Seeing Pinky again, her father, waving his arms about wildly, moved his lips without saying anything. Meanwhile, Sarah, overjoyed, hugged Pinky tightly, tears streaming down her cheeks.

Text 1
M: Have you got much homework
W: I’ve got some art. It doesn’t have to be handed in till Friday. My history essay has to be in tomorrow, though, so I’d better finish that this evening.
Text 2
W: Did I tell you my brother’s working at Scooter—that new designer clothes place
M: Cool! I’d like to work there as a shop assistant myself.
W: Well, he wanted to do that, but they only needed a security guard. So he was given that job instead.
Text 3
W: The basketball game starts soon.
M: You want to watch that
W: Well yeah...
M: I am hoping to watch that documentary on animal communication. It’d be useful for my project, and you can watch the chat show you love after it.
Text 4
M: The food’s great and isn’t expensive.
W: Yes. This burger’s as delicious as it looks in the picture, but I thought it would be big.
Text 5
M: I didn’t like the concert yesterday, mainly because the musicians hadn’t practiced enough. They were bad, I think.
W: Really I think they played well, but I’ve never seen some of those instruments before.
M: It must be interesting to play something new, I guess.
Text 6
M: These sports shoes are my size, but they only have them in green. That wouldn’t be my first choice of color, but I’ll try them on and see how they feel—that’s the most important thing. My old ones were a bit tight.
W: Those look good on you—the color’s really stylish, but most students at our school are wearing black ones these days.
M: Yes, especially the boys in your class. Anyway, these are made from a new kind of material and feel really light. They’re great. I hope I’ve got enough money.
W: Don’t worry. My mum just gave me some money. I can lend it to you.
Text 7
M: I really enjoyed that. I came so close to getting the ball in the net a few times.
W: If you all play as well as that in every game, you should start actually beating some of the other teams.
M: I hope so. We’ve all trained really hard this season, and our new coach has made a big difference. I think I probably played better than usual because Mum and Dad could both get here for once. I’m always cheerful when they do.
W: Well I’m sure they enjoyed it as much as I did.
Text 8
M: Thank you for taking me camping with you last weekend, Aunt Lizzie.
W: It was great, especially when we went swimming. It was too windy to swim in the sea, but the lake was great anyway. Perhaps next time we can try the river.
M: Sleeping in a tent was new for me. I was worried about it on the first night, but I soon found out how exciting it is! My brother was very unhappy that he couldn’t come with us.
W: The campsite was quite big, but it’s a pity there was nowhere to buy food and things. And the showers there were a bit dirty, but OK.
Text 9
M: Jasmine, what made you decide to go on a flying experience day
W: A friend of mine tried it. Even though she’d been frightened, she told me she’d noticed her house while she was up there. That made me want to look for mine, too. It wasn’t like I wanted to fly planes professionally or anything.
M: How was your flying instructor
W: She was brilliant. I’d always imagined flying instructors would be cool and quiet people. Jana was like that before we took off but quite different in the air. She chatted with me and made me laugh by saying funny things—she said afterwards she did it to help people relax.
M: And what about the flight
W: It was one of the most exciting things I’ve ever done, although I was kind of expecting that. When we landed, it felt like we’d been up there for hours, although it was only about 30 minutes in reality. In some of the online reviews, people said they were tired afterwards, but I was just the opposite. And it made me want to try other experience days like horse riding. First on my list, though, would be driving a sports car, and after that would come deep sea fishing.
Text 10
W: Hello, everyone! I’d like to tell you about this wonderful acting club I joined recently. The best thing about it is the teacher, Alice Fisher, and she’s appearing in a play at the big theater in town now. She plays a policewoman in that, but you’ll probably know her better as the farmer in the series Green Valley that was on last year.
She’s worked as a professional theater actor for about 10 years. As well as having three years’ experience of appearing in serious drama, she’s spent seven years working in comedy productions, so she has lots of different talents.
The classes are always fun and are split into two sections. In the first part, rather than practicing anything to do with movement of the body, we focus instead on how to control the voice as an actor. In the second part, we practice our performance skills.
At the moment, we’re practicing for a play, The Passenger, which will be on at the Town Theater soon. We’re hoping that this latest one will be as popular as the last production the club did, which was called Reality.
We’ve got our last practice for the new play on July 13th, with audiences able to come and see it from July 20th for one week.博野中学2021-2022学年高二第一学期期中考试英语试题

Actor James Woods is using Twitter to connect people who have lost touch with their loved ones in the chaos of Northern California’s Camp Fire near Chico and Southern California’s Woolsey Fire in Malibu, which together have forced tens of thousands to flee their homes.
Woods made news in September after saying he was locked out of his Twitter account for posting what the social media company said was a hoax (恶作剧), and required him to delete it before regaining control of his account. But now, he is using his Twitter fame to reunite family members in two terrible California wildfires.
Through his Twitter account, the actor is inviting people to use the hash tags (话题标签) Camp Fire James Woods and So Cal Fires James Woods to post the names of missing family members and friends. He then shares the message to his more than 2 million followers. Hundreds of concerned users have tweeted in with photos and descriptions of missing people. Many of the tweets are from people looking for seniors. When someone is found, Woods also shares the news.
Both the Camp and Woolsey fires broke out on Thursday. The Camp Fire in Butte County is becoming known for its fast-moving pace, blackening more than 70,000 acres in less than 24 hours. The fire started at 6:30 a.m. and within three hours spread across 5,000 acres. By Friday morning, it had spread through most of the town of Paradise, burning hundreds of buildings. The Woolsey fire rapidly climbed into the Santa Monica Mountains and raced toward the coast. It has spread through 14,000 acres.

My school appeared on the news last week because we had made an important change in our local area. Our class had planted a large garden in what was once only a vacant lot. It was a lot of work but it was all worth it. I got blisters (水泡) from digging, and we all got insect bites, too.
I learned a lot about gardening and collaboration (合作), and then I learned about the media. Our teacher telephoned the TV station and informed them of what we had accomplished. She spoke with the producer. The producer checked with the directors, but they said there were plenty of stories similar to ours. They wanted to know what was special about our particular garden, since many schools plant them.
The teacher explained that, after going on the Internet to learn about the prairie (大草原), we had made a prairie garden. We had gone to a prairie and gotten seeds from the plants, and then we planted them. We did not water the garden, but we did weed it. We decided to let nature water it with rain, since that was how prairies grew in the past. We sent a picture of the garden to the news station. In the picture, the grass was so high that it stood taller than the fourth grade students.
As a result, the producer sent a reporter to our school. He interviewed the headmaster and asked him many questions about the garden. After that, they interviewed us, and we explained to them what we had learned through this project.
That night, we watched the news, and there we were. The news reporter told our story. It was only two minutes long, but it was us. We were famous. All that work, all those blisters, it was worth it. We knew that when we saw the garden every day, but now we knew that the whole city thought so, too.
24. What seemed to be the TV directors' initial reaction to the garden
A. They were excited. B. They were surprised.
C. They were worried. D. They were uninterested.
25. What is special about the garden
A. Weeds were allowed to spread naturally.
B. The grass grew faster than common grass.
C. The seeds came from the plants of a prairie.
D. Underground water was used for the plants.
26. What does the underlined word“that" refer to in the last paragraph
A. We got blisters on our hands. B. Our hard work was worthwhile.
C. The garden would be famous. D. The project would be finished.
27. How did the author feel about the project
A. Annoyed. B. Curious. C. Proud. D. Regretful.

Famous for its tolerance as well as its narrow houses and broad canals, Amsterdam is undergoing a change of attitude when it comes to the millions of tourists that come to see it each year. Tolerance has reached its limits in the capital of Dutch, which is now actively urging visitors to head elsewhere.
Ellen van Loon, a partner at Dutch architectural firm OMA says, “We don’t want to turn into a Venice. While tourism earns the Dutch economy around 82 billion Euros a year, the problem we are currently facing is that Amsterdam is so loved by tourists, we just have so many coming to the city.”
Netherlands tourist officials recently took the decision to stop advertising the country as a tourist destination. Their “Perspective 2030” report, published earlier this year, stated that the focus will now be on “destination management” rather than “destination promoting”. The document also describes the country’s future strategy, acknowledging that Amsterdam’s livability will be severely influenced by “visitor overload” if action isn’t taken.
Solutions listed include working to discourage groups of visitors by either limiting or completely shutting down accommodation and entertainment products aimed at them, as well as spreading visitors to other parts of the Netherlands. Some of these measures have already come into play. Last year, the famous “I Amsterdam” sign was removed from outside the Rijksmuseum, the city’s main art gallery. The two-meter high letters have been moved to various “lesser-known neighborhoods” in a bid to entice travelers to leave the center of the city.
But will the measures being put in place be enough to save it from being damaged by its own success Like many other locals, van Loon fears Amsterdam has lost its uniqueness forever. “The reason tourists come here is that there’s something in the character of Amsterdam they love,” she explains. “But at a certain point, when the number of tourists is increasing and increasing, they actually kill what they loved in the first place.”
28. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 indicate
A. Venice is suffering from overtourism.
B. Amsterdam doesn’t necessarily copy Venice.
C. Venice does more poorly than Amsterdam.
D. Amsterdam is more popular than Venice.
29. Why did Amsterdam advice visitors to head elsewhere
A. To reduce its pressure of mass visitors.
B. To turn the focus on destination promoting.
C. To promote the development of other areas.
D. To avoid much spending on city management.
30. What does the underlined word “entice” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Force B. Persuade. C. Inform. D. Allow.
31. What’s van Loon’s attitude to the measure
A. Positive. B. Objective. C. Skeptical. D. Ambiguous.
D
Hearing loss is unavoidable, but listening to loud music when you’ re younger can make it worse. To reduce your risk of hearing loss via loud music, learn why and how it can cause hearing loss, and just how loud is too loud.
Hearing loss occurs in four ways: conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss, mixed hearing loss and auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder. Noise-induced(噪音诱发的)hearing loss is a type of sensorineural hearing loss.
Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when your inner ear becomes damaged. In the case of noise induced hearing loss, most of the damage affects the cells of tiny sensory hairs in your inner ear. When those cells get damaged or die, the electrical signal that your auditory nerve sends to your brain changes.
Noise-induced hearing loss can be acute or severe, and it can be temporary or permanent. You might be familiar with acute temporary noise-induced hearing loss, even if you didn’t realize what was happening at the time.
Acute temporary noise-induced hearing loss can occur from attending a loud concert or sporting event, going to a gun range without earmuffs or being near an explosion. It can make noises sound “stuffy” or far away, especially when talking on the phone or in a crowded room. Repeated exposure to those loud situations can eventually lead to permanent hearing loss.
Noise levels from earbuds and headphones can get as loud as 139 decibels, according to the journal Noise &Health, far greater than the recommended range of everyday sound exposure, which is 60 to 85 decibels. And the average level of noise from headphones, with the volume turned all the way up, is 94 to 110 decibels. For context, 60 decibels is about the volume of an average conversation, and 130 decibels is about the noise level of a rock concert. 85 decibels is considered the maximum volume at which you can listen to sound for eight hours without damaging your hearing. So if you were to listen to music from your headphones for eight hours a day, listening at a volume louder than 85 decibels can cause permanent damage to your ears.
Unfortunately, the relationship between decibels and time isn’t linear. For every three decibels, safe exposure time gets cut in half, according to the CDC. At 88 decibels, you can only safely listen for four hours; at 91 decibels, just two hours.
32. What does the underlined word ”it” in Paragraph One refer to
A. Hearing loss. B. Listening to loud music. C. Risk. D. Loud music.
33. In which of the following situations is acute temporary noise-induced hearing loss more likely to occur
A. Attending a rock concert. B. Participating in a heated debate.
C. Going to a gun range with earmuffs. D. Watching an explosion at a distance.
34. In terms of safe exposure, how long can you listen at 97 decibels
A. A quarter. B. Half an hour. C. One hour. D. One and a half hours.
35. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage
A. Loud Music Damages Hearing B. How to Prevent Hearing Loss
C. How Loud Is Too Loud D. Music and Hearing

The Hotel Wake-up Call Gets Personal
Here's a wake-up call: The hotel front desk will do one better than ringing your phone in
the morning. They'll send an actual human being to your room. Don't worry. They won't
come in and kiss you good morning.__ 36___
Never mind that most travelers nowadays have smart phones with built-in alarm clocks. __37___ Here are some examples. At the Wolcott Hotel, if a wake-up call is unanswered, they will send an employee to your door. At Las Ventanas al Paraiso, an employee shows up at your room to wake you up with tea, coffee and breakfast bread. At the Mandarin Oriental, a person rather than an automated system will call to wake you up. __ 38__
Hotels have always taken the wake-up call seriously. __ 39__If you don't get your call within five minutes of the requested time, you won't have to pay for your room. Travelers, too, still want to have an option of a wake-up call. A study of 285 guests at Crown Plaza found that 53% considered a wake-up call very important.
__40 __In the late 1980s, hotels turned to automated systems. Then all you'd get was a ring and silence. In the ever-competitive race for loyal customers, however, many hotels are now getting creative with the wake-up call. Some hotels even have recordings of celebrity voices. And more hotels will go back to the old in-person system of wake up calls.
A. But they might bring you coffee.
B. If you don't answer, you'll get a wake-up knock.
C. Crown Plaza, for instance, has a wake-up call guarantee.
D. But the wake up call became less personal over the years.
E. The hotel gets 15 to 30 requests for wake-up calls each day.
F. The human wake-up call is a way to personalize a guest's stay.
G. Some guests sleep through the call, while others turn their phone ringers off.

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为 150 左右。
Sara Savick remembers one special Easter when she was nine years old. Her parents gave her a baby duck in a yellow basket.
“Mom said later that she bought the little duck because she felt sorry for it,” recalled Sara. The people at the pet store colored the feathers pink for Easter. Sara named the duck Pinky. Sara’s mother really didn’t think the baby duck would survive very long. But to her surprise, Pinky grew and got stronger and stronger. Soon, the little duckling was a healthy, hungry duck with white feathers.
“We fed Pinky oatmeal, cooked and uncooked, and small pieces of vegetables,” said Sara. Pinky lived inside the house with Sara and her family. She specially fancied taking baths with Sara. Everyone treated Pinky as a family member.
But just when everything appeared to be perfect, the night of the “talk” came. Sara’s Mom and Dad sat her down, explaining that the best thing for Pinky was to live a normal duck life, with other ducks. It was not natural for ducks to live indoors with a family, her father told her. He added Pinky needed to swim in ponds and do all the same things that ducks in the wild do.
Sara started to cry, knowing what was going to happen. Sara’s parents decided to take Pinky to a park, which was two miles away. There was a pond with a lot of other ducks. Pinky would have the chance to live a natural life and Sara could still visit her.
The big day came, Sara and her parents put Pinky in a box and drove to the park. Sara said that Pinky did not look happy; maybe Pinky was convinced that she was a human, not a duck.
Paragraph 1
Everyone was sad when they left Pinky at the pond, even Sara’s father.
