If Confucius(孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He'd need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.
While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It's nothing personal. Most Americans don't even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.
But this doesn't mean that Americans don't care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.
In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks(缺陷)of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.
So the old thinker's ideas are still alive and well.
Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.
As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

Procrastination (拖延) is a phenomenon we are familiar with. When we procrastinate we waste our free time and put off important tasks we should do until it’s too late. It’s a bad habit stopping us achieving greater success in life. 36

Change your environment.
Look at your work desk and your room. Do they make you want to work or do they make you sleepy 38
Create a detailed timeline with specific deadlines.
That’s because we would get the impression that we have time and keep pushing everything back until it’s too late. Break down your project, and then create an overall timeline with specific deadlines(截止日期)for each small task. In this way, 39 you know you have to finish each task by a certain date.

第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分)
第一节 课文语法填空(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)
●When Nadim invited me to his sister’s wedding, I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime. I was 41. ______ (definite) not wrong!
The wedding ceremony took place in a brightly decorated hotel room. There were hundreds of guests, all 42. ______ (dress) up in formal, colourful clothes. According to tradition, the bride was wearing an eye-catching red silk sari.
I did not understand all of the traditional customs, but a few made a deep 43. ______ (impress) on me. One was the bridegroom’s entrance on a beautiful white horse. I had never seen that back home! Another was the part when Nadim’s father proudly led his daughter through the rows of seats to her husband. It reminded me 44. ______ my sister’s wedding. Although our cultures are so different, the smiling faces are the same.
The customs that followed were anything 45. ______ ordinary. The couple joined hands and walked around a small fire four times. Then they took seven steps together by the fire, and with each step made a different promise about how they were going to support each other and live together happily. It was very romantic
After the ceremony, it was time for the celebrations. That is a story for another day, but let’s just say there was a lot of dancing. Now I know I have two left feet . . . and both of them hurt!
●A child and a man were walking on the beach when the child found a shell and held it to his ear. Suddenly he heard strange, low, 46. ______ (music) sounds. These sounds seemed to be from another world and the child listened to them with wonder. Then the man explained that the child heard nothing strange, and 47. ______ the shell caught a range of sounds too faint for human ears. What amazed the child was not a new world, but the unnoticed music of the old.
Some such experience as this lies in store for us when we begin the study of literature. Let a little song appeal to the ear, or a great book to the heart, and we discover a new world, a world of dreams and magic. 48. ______ (enter) and enjoy this new world, we need to love literature, and make an effort to explain it. Behind every book is a man, behind the man is the race, and behind the race are the natural and social environments. We must know all these, if the book is to speak its whole message. In a word, we have now reached a point 49. ______ we wish to enjoy and understand literature. The first step is to determine some of its significant qualities.
The first quality of literature is its 50. ______ (describe) of truth and beauty. Some truth and beauty remain unnoticed 51. ______ a sensitive human soul brings them to our attention, just as the shell reflects the unnoticed sounds. A hundred men may pass a field and see only dead grass; but a poet stops, looks deeper, sees truth and beauty, and writes, “Yesterday’s flowers am I. ” One 52. ______ reads it is capable of seeing the beauty that was hidden from his eyes before.
The second quality of literature is its appeal to our feelings and imagination. Its attraction lies more in what it awakens in us than what it says. When Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus asks in the 53. ______ (present) of Helen, “Was this the face that launched a thousand ships ” he opens a door through which our imagination enters a new world, a world of love, beauty and heroism.
The third quality of literature, 54. ______ (come) out of the other two, is its permanence. To achieve this, it should contain two elements: universal interest and personal style. Good literature reflects the most basic of human nature—love and hate, joy and sadness, fear and hope. It also takes on a personal style—no writer can describe human life without reflecting his own life and experiences.
In summary, literature is the expression of life in forms of truth and beauty, the 55______ (write) record of man’s thoughts and feelings, and the history of the human soul.

It was late spring. When my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with Mom. However, little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one. A pot of flowers sat in her back seat, whose pleasant smell filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over. “What are you doing ” I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we’d be stuck there so far from home. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case. My mom hopped out of the car grabbing the flowers from the back seat. “It’ll just be a minute. ” she called back through the open windows.
Impatiently, I cast my eyes towards the edge of the road before they settled on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared empty-handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask. “Do you know someone there ” She shook her head. “Then what did you do with the flowers ” She smiled slightly. “I gave them to the receptionist(前台接待员). “What ” She laughed at my confusion. “I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially those who haven’t received any in a while. ”
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we went on with our driving. I spoke again. “Did you leave your name ” To this she answered instantly, “No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me. ”
Suddenly, still thinking about Mom’s deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn’t know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passerby, since we had seen so few along the way.
Paragraph 1
I let out a sigh(叹气) while my Mum rooted herself against the car worrying about what could be done.
Paragraph 2
As we drove along, a flower shop came into sight on the road.

Dear Tom,
How’s everything going I’ve been in a dilemma these days. Now I am at the stage of choosing courses in high school. I am hesitating between physics and history. I hope you can offer me some advice.
From my point of view, the main purpose of the curricula-variable system is for scientific talents and maintain education fair to the maximum extent. As far as I am concerned, physics from which we can learn the nature of some phenomena lays solid foundation for new inventions, and helps us explore the future. History is a subject for us to have a good understanding of the past and learn something meaningful from the past.
Both of the subjects are attractive. So I would be grateful if you could share some of your thoughts with me.
Yours Sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
Paragraph 1
I let out a sigh while my Mum rooted herself against the car worrying about what could be done. But after waiting in vain for a considerable time, Mom and I decided to walk back the road to the nursing home and seek help. God knows how far we had driven! When we arrived, the receptionist was surprised, but warmly helped us contact the garage. There, the old men who had received the flowers were excited to meet us, talking about how great that day was. It amazed us what random actions of kindness could mean to the people who received them. While we were laughing and talking merrily, we received the news that the garage had got our car repaired.
Paragraph 2
As we dove alone, a flower shop came into sight on the road. I asked Mum to pull up and paced quickly into the flower shop, where a bunch of flowers glowing red in full bloom caught my eye. Having witnessed the effect of kindness, I decided to send Mom the sweet flowers. Soon, the pleasant scent filled the car again. Mom tried to conceal her excitement, but the glittering tears failed her. Through this trip, I discovered that, despite my occasional anger towards her. I actually felt proud of her. This was the trip of my life.

W:No, I’ve been working for a tour company.
M:Did you have a good time
W:Well, it was hard work, but really enjoyable. Have you ever been to Italy
M:No, I haven’t been there yet but I’d love to go. How long were you there
W:Six months. By the way, have you lost weight since the last time I saw you
M:Yes, I’ve given up eating chocolate cakes. In fact, I haven’t had any since Christmas.

M:My watch always gains ten minutes a day.
W:That’s funny. My watch always loses ten minutes a day.
M:No kidding.
W:I’m serious. Every morning I set my watch by the radio, but it still loses ten minutes.
M:Do you know what you can do
W:Throw it away and buy a new one
M:No, you don’t have to. You only need to put your watch ahead ten minutes every day.
W:So you put your watch back ten minutes every day
M:Yeah, that’s what I do.
W:Why bother Just buy a new watch. It doesn’t cost much. Besides, I just can’t put up with this thing any more.

M:Are you new here
W:Yes, it’s my first day. My name is Monica Martin.
M:I’m Wilson Leech. That’s my order form you’re working on.
W:I have just finished it. Do you want to fax it to the head office
M:That would be great. Do you know how to use the fax machine
W:Sure. I can send it right now.
M:Oh, Monica, I need to make some phone calls to China and Mexico.
W:What can I do for you
M:Well, I’m OK calling China. The problem is that I can’t speak any Spanish. Can you
W:No problem. I studied it at college. You just have to tell me what to say.
M:That’s really good. By the way, what’s your typing speed
W:I can type about 70 words in a minute.
Text 10
W:Mr. Day was on holiday. He was staying in a small town famous for blankets. One sunny morning he went to the market, and saw a beautiful blanket there. It was big and full of rich colors. He looked at it for a long time, and then went away. The next day he asked about the price.
“This one, Sir This is a very special blanket, ”said the woman.
“Yes, but how much is it ”
“It’s a special one, Sir, so it is not cheap. It’s beautiful, isn’t it ”
“Yes, it is very beautiful but…”
“It is also very old. It belonged to a great man many years ago. So I can’t sell it cheap. ”
“No. How much is it ”Mr. Day asked again.
“A beautiful old blanket, Sir, and also a magic one. A magic flying blanket. A man came this morning and offered me five hundred pounds for it. ”
“Oh, ”said Mr. Day.
“But I like you, Sir. You look like a very nice gentleman. I will sell it to you. Five hundred and fifty pounds. ”
“Hmm, ”Mr. Day thought for a moment, “All right. ”
“Very good, Sir, ”said the woman. “Will you pay now and take it with you ”
“No, ”said Mr. Day. “Here is my address. Fly over on the blanket. I’ll pay you when you arrive. ”
