三、阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
When I was a child, I had very mixed feelings about my father. Most of the time, he was distant. At meals, he would preach (说教) something to us, his unwilling audience. And he thought he was always right.
Usually I would argue with him fiercely, yet still he managed to defeat me every time, leaving me frustrated and angry. Sometimes I just hated him and seldom talked with him. After moving away from home at age 18, I realized that I could change myself by letting go of my need to be right. I wrote dad a letter asking if he was interested in becoming friends. Dad was excited at the idea. Yet after a brief, enjoyable period of about two months, I found those same old patterns again. However, I still held to my decision. Gradually, I learned to hold my tongue. When discussion turned to debate, I would do my very best not to prove him wrong. By the end of six months, I had done it! I could sit through a conversation where dad was telling me how I was wrong and didn’t argue with him.
As I got better at this, I could accept and even love my dad. One day when he was again preaching some rules, I simply nodded my head occasionally. Then I heard, “Well, Fred, what do you think?” From that point on, dad and I began having meaningful conversations.
I was amazed that once I made the big changes, dad changed, too! From that point on, our relationship gradually grew warmer and deeper.

Photography is a great career choice, which can help people focus on being creative.
As a photographer you are not going to be successful unless you have subjects to shoot (拍摄). Luckily, it is not difficult to find photography subjects. Almost everything around you can be a subject for your next photo. Most photographers like to focus on one type of subject so that they can become an expert in that area. Early on you should determine what you like to shoot, and then stick to that subject for a while. The best way to determine what photography subject is best for you is to try out each one. After you shoot everything you will have a better idea of what you want to focus on.
There are some skills a photographer should keep in mind. When you take a picture, you can move in closer for a better shot. In this way, you can make your subject clearer, which helps your viewer understand and appreciate your photo. With regards to the location, it’s best to shoot with the sun behind you. Besides, weather is important during taking pictures. If it’s cloudy, simply keep the sky out of your pictures as much as possible. Also, don’t allow yourself to be filled with fears of using settings (背景). If you are afraid of upsetting someone by taking his picture, just go up and ask if it’s okay. Ask him to agree with your request and offer a print in return.

Some storms might help to prevent powerful earthquakes. New research suggests that ocean storms could help to prevent powerful earthquakes — at least on the island of Taiwan. Typhoons often strike the island during the second half of the year.
Recently, it is reported that typhoons’ striking Taiwan can cause slow earthquakes. Slow earthquakes are different from violent earthquakes, which happen suddenly and can be extremely destructive. Instead, slow earthquakes release their energy over a period of hours or even days. They can ruin fewer things. People cannot feel slow earthquakes on the ground, and instruments like seismographs (地震仪) cannot measure them. However, a slow earthquake could be helpful to release pressure, and possibly prevent more powerful quakes.
In the study, scientists placed highly sensitive measuring equipment two hundred to two hundred and seventy meters under the ocean’s surface (表面). These devices were placed in holes near eastern Taiwan. This same area is also where two major plates meet. The plates can cause earthquakes as they move. The scientists collected measurements from 2002 to 2007. The information they gathered suggests typhoons and slow earthquakes near Taiwan are linked. The equipment measured twenty slow earthquakes during the five-year observation period. Of those twenty, eleven took place at the same time as typhoons.
Typhoons cause atmospheric pressure to drop. The scientists suggest that this causes a reduction in pressure on the land where the plates meet. As a result, one side of the fault area (断层) lifts, causing the pressure that has been building up inside to be released. This could explain why Taiwan has a large number of small earthquakes, but rarely a major one.
44. Slow and violent earthquakes are different in .
A. the place they strike B. the time they happen
C. the length of time they last
D. the changes in weather they cause
45. The underlined word “destructive” in Paragraph 2 probably means “ ”.

D. To introduce a new way of measuring slow earthquakes.
47. What can we infer from the text?

D. Humans can get along well with nature.

Although with summer comes the heat, there is no reason to keep children indoors. The best choice is to swim. You can arrange swimming pool games as well.
Marco Polo is one of the most popular games. In this game, one of the players is blindfolded (蒙住眼睛) and waits till a certain count is over. The other players are around in the pool. After the count is over, the blindfolded player swims around and tries to find any other player. He is allowed to locate the other players only by their voices. In order to guess their location, he cries “Marco”, to which all the other players reply by shouting “Polo”. This continues till he is able to find another player, who is then blindfolded and made to catch another player, and so on.
Another interesting game is Colors, in which one member of the team volunteers to be the “catcher”. The other players choose a color each. The player with the color called out by the catcher has to swim across the pool to the other side as quickly as possible.
In the game “London Bridge Is Falling Down”, two or more players stand in the water holding each other’s hands high above their shoulder level forming a “bridge”. The other players are then required to walk below the bridge one by one. Every time a player passes under the bridge, the bridge is lowered. Eventually the players have to swim under the water to cross the bridge.
Organizing swimming pool games for kids and watching them play can be quite fun. However, one must be very careful about the safety of the children while they are in the water.

Bundanoon, an Australian town, is possibly the first town in the world to stop the sale of bottled water.
First becoming popular in the 1980s as convenient, healthy drinks, bottled water is now often regarded as a threat to the environment, with bottles requiring large amounts of energy to produce and transport. Bundanoon began to think about and prepare for the battle against the bottle several years ago, when a Sydney-based beverage (饮料) company announced plans to build a water extraction (水萃取) factory in the town. People living there were angry about an outsider taking their water to Sydney for processing and then selling it back to them. Then Kingston, who owns the town’s cafe and bike shops, decided that if the town was so against setting up such a factory, they could just stop selling bottled water.
To prevent lost benefits in the town’s businesses that sell bottled water, Kingston suggested they instead sell reusable bottles for about the same price. People will be able to fill the bottles for free at public water fountains, or pay a small fee to fill them with pure water kept in the stores.
356 people voted, but only two people voted no. One said he was worried banning bottled water would encourage people to drink sugary drinks. The other was Geoff Parker, director of the Australasian Bottled Water Institute. He said the bottled water industry is a leader in researching ways to reduce bottled beverage influence on the environment.

D. People should drink more free water in public places.
55. What would be the best title for the text?
