After finishing my teaching for a school year, I thought that I should go back to Montreal, Quebec, my hometown for a visit. My main goal was to relax in preparation for the challenges of my retirement in the coining year.
Through my stay in Montreal, I met lots of Chinese who are struggling to succeed and then lead a better life in Canada. Some travelled thousands of miles to get knowledge. When I spoke with some of them about the major barrier(障碍) they had to face after they arrived in Canada, they all talked about the two official languages of Canada. But I was impressed by their ability to express their ideas while switching between English and French.
Almost all of those people said they often felt homesick. They missed their families and friends. Though Montreal has lots of Chinese restaurants, they longed for a home-cooked meal.
I met some tourists who were trying to realize their childhood dreams of experiencing the life in a developed country. When I asked them if Montreal had lived up to their expectations, they hesitated. They said that reality never agreed with fantasies. However, they were glad to have the opportunity to visit Montreal and didn't regret taking the trip.
Not all the Chinese people I met were happy. I once met a young lady who met with a gentleman through the Internet. However, to her disappointment, he disappeared after he promised to marry her in Montreal.
I was served by another Chinese person who could not handle the challenges of studying in an English-speaking environment and ended up working in a restaurant with low pay.
Exploring different parts of the world, without any doubt, is a rich experience. However, one should be realistic when it comes to leaving his hometown to start a new life in a foreign country. One should take time to examine the advantages and the shortcomings of the adventure before he decides to chase an uncertain dream of achieving success or leading a better life.
1.Why did the writer go to his hometown
A.To meet his old friends. B.To study a new language.
C.To go on with his teaching. D.To prepare for his retirement life.
2.What is the main barrier for some Chinese longing to get knowledge in Canada
A.Food. B.Homesickness. C.Language. D.Income.
3.The writer thinks that ________.
A.overseas Chinese are good at communication in Canada
B.the trip to Montreal is a good chance for people to study
C.overseas Chinese feel disappointed at their life in Canada
D.people should think carefully before chasing their dreams abroad
4.What is the best title for the passage
A.Improving Life Skills in Canada B.Exploring Different Parts of Canada
C.Struggling for a Better Life in Canada D.Going to Canada—Your Ideal Destination
C
Just last month, AI-generated art arrived on the auction(拍卖) stage of Christie's, proving that artificial intelligence can not only be creative but also produce world-class works of art—another significant AI milestone blurring the line between humans and machines.
Naturally, the news sparked off debates about whether the work produced by Paris-based art collective Obvious could really be called art at all. Popular opinion among creatives is that art is a process by which human beings express some ideas or emotions, filter them through personal experience and set them against a broader cultural context. The story raised additional questions about ownership. In this circumstance, who can really be named as the author The algorithm(算法) itself or the team behind it
At GumGum, an AI company that focuses on computer vision, we wanted to explore the intersection of AI and art by devising a Turing Test of our own in association with Rutgers University's Art and Artificial Intelligence Lab and Cloud-painter, an artificially intelligent painting robot. We were keen to see whether AI can, in fact, replicate(复制) the intent and imagination of traditional artists, and we wanted to explore the potential impact of AI on the creative sector.
To do this, we enlisted a broad collection of diverse artists from traditional paint-on-canvas artists to 3-D rendering and modeling artists alongside Pindar Van Arman—a classically trained artist who has been coding art robots for 15 years. Van Arman was tasked with using his Cloudpainter machine to create pieces of art based on the same data set as the more traditional artists. This data set was a collection of art by 20th century American Abstract Expressionists. Then, we asked them to document the process, showing us their preferred tools and telling us how they came to their final work.
Amazingly, while at face value the AI artwork was indistinguishable from that of the more traditional artists, the test revealed that the creative spark and ultimate agency behind creating a work of art are still very human. Even though the Cloudpainter machine has evolved over time to become a highly intelligent system capable of making creative decisions of its own, the final piece of work could only be described as a collaboration(合作) between humans and machines. Van Arman served as more of an "art director for the painting".
As AI becomes an unstoppable force, it raises some difficult questions about the fixture role of humans in an increasingly automated world. Instead of worrying about AI's threat to human creative supremacy, the future will be about accepting new technologies and the possibilities it brings for speeding up the process. It's better to think of AI as your next creative assistant; beautiful pieces of work can be produced in collaboration with it.
1. According to popular opinion, the Al-generated work _____.
A. should have been based on personal experience
B. was set against a broader cultural context
C. couldn't be considered art at all
D. expressed no idea or emotion
2. What did the experiment at GumGum show
A. AI artworks could be easily identified.
B. AI artworks could show human emotions.
C. AI had trouble making sensible decisions.
D. AI couldn't complete a work independently.
3. Which of the following statements would the author agree with
A. Beautiful pieces cannot be works of AI.
B. AI could be an advanced tool for artists.
C. AI could challenge the supremacy of humans.
D. New technologies can pose a danger to humans.
4. What is the best title for the passage
A. Can AI Create True Art
B. Can AI Threaten Humans
C. Will Human Art Disappear
D. Are AI Artworks Distinguishable
D
The following 4 famous paintings—from Jan van Eyck's portrait to Pablo Picasso's masterpiece—have stood the test of time.
The Amolfini Portrait
Jan van Eyck's The Amolfini Portrait, an oil painting on wood produced in 1434, in which a man and a woman hold hands with a window behind him and a bed behind her, is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces in the National Gallery, London. This painting is as visually interesting as it is famed. It is also an informative document on fifteenth-century society, through van Eyck's heavy use of symbolism—while husbands went out to engage in business, wives concerned themselves with domestic duties.
The Starry Night
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night, oil on canvas(帆布), a moderately abstract landscape painting of an expressive night sky over a small hillside village, during his 12-month stay at the mental hospital near Saint-Remy-de-Provence, France between 1889 and 1890. When the Museum of Modem Art in New York City purchased the painting from a private collector in 1941, it was not well known, but it has since become one of van Gogh's most famous works.
The Harvesters
The Harvesters is an oil painting on wood completed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565. It depicts the harvest time which most commonly occurred within the months of August and September. Nicolaes Jonghelinck, a merchant banker and art collector from Antwerp, commissioned this painting. The painting has been at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City since 1919.
Guernica
Guernica, a large black-and-white oil painting, was painted by the Cubist Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso in 1937. The title "Guernica" refers to the city that was bombed by Nazi planes during the Spanish Civil War. The painting depicts the horrors of war and as a result, has come to be an anti-war symbol and a reminder of the tragedies of war. Today, the painting is housed at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid.
1. Which of the following paintings was produced earliest
A. Guernica. B. The Harvesters.
C. The Starry Night. D. The Amolfini Portrait.
2. Who created the painting describing the harvest seasons
A. Pieter Bruegel the Elder. B. Vincent van Gogh.
C. Jan van Eyck. D. Pablo Picasso.
3. What do we know about the painting The Starry Night
A. It was painted on wood in oils.
B. It described the painter's life in hospital.
C. It wasn't widely recognized before 1941.
D. It was given away to the museum by a collector.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 If you have ever been in a school play or even made to believe you were a doctor, a detective, or a space traveler, you will know the enjoyment that acting brings. Almost all of us have the wish to play the part of someone—or something else. ① _____
In the ancient world, acting was often associated with religious ceremonies and other special occasions. As far back as 2200 B.C., trained Chinese actors performed ceremonial dances in costume and made up at harvest festivals. ②_____
To the dance was gradually added pantomime— the imitation of movements and gestures—as well as the wearing of masks, the singing of chants, and finally the use of dialogue.
While acting was coming into its own in the ancient Chinese classical theatre, it was doing the same in Greece. From about 500 B.C. on, acting became a kind of highly specialized and influential art in Greece. Greek actors, however, still wore masks, and their motions were largely fixed by custom. ③_____
Modern acting, by contrast, gives the individual actor great opportunity to develop his or her personal talents for serious, comic, or musical drama. The names, faces, and styles of famous movie actors are known worldwide. ④_____
A special form of acting took place in the form of radio drama, which was highly popular before television. In radio drama the actors face a unique challenge. They are unseen by their audience. So they must rely on voice alone to make their characters real to the listeners.
⑤_____ Only forty percent of Broadway actors are employed, most of them for only part of the year. Those who become stars need not only talent, but determination. They must not be easily discouraged. Otherwise, they might give up before the opportunity for stardom presents itself.
A.The origin of acting is in the act of remembering.
B.Drama in Greece began with festivals honoring Dionysus.
C.It is believed that this was the first step in the development of acting.
D.Historical records indicate that this desire is as old as civilization itself.
E.Acting is not, as many people think, a quick, easy road to reputation and wealth.
F.Therefore, they had little opportunity to show their individual personalities.
G.Broadway (百老汇) and television provide other stages on which actors can display their talents.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写词数应为150左右。
Ten-year-old Sam loved to visit his grandfather's house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, Sam would break them open and drink the coconut juice. Sam liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa's place.
This winter vacation, Sam was surprised when he came to his grandfather's village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.
Grandpa's house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door—one was Petu, and the other Betu. He had planted them with his own hands and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts.
One night, Sam was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed and turned (辗转反侧) in bed. Suddenly, the ground began shaking as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung (附着) to his grandpa. Grandpa cried out, "It's an earthquake! It's an earthquake!" They ran outside the house. They thought that it would be safer there.
Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, "The sea is rising! The sea is rising!" The villagers started running away from the beach. Sam was dumbstruck (呆若木鸡).
The waves were rising higher and higher. Sam thought, "How big the waves are!" He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.
Sam remembered his mother telling him long ago, "You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near." So he ran out to be with Grandpa.
Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。

答案: Grandpa held Sam's hand tightly but a huge wave separated them. Grandpa fought the waves and strived to catch Sam, but failed. Sam was washed away! Grandpa struggled to keep his head above the water. The water pushed him ahead. Fortunately, he caught a palm tree in his courtyard. He panicked and screamed out at Sam but could not see him. He clung to the tree tightly while the water was all around. In the hope of seeing Sam, Grandpa climbed higher up the tree. The water carried Sam round and round.
"Sam! Sam!" cried Grandpa. "Don't be scared, little e to me, quickly!" "But Grandpa, I can't swim!" Another wave came with terrifying speed and force. Sam cried in despair. Suddenly, Sam felt himself thrown onto the top of a tree. He immediately held it! Looking around, he saw everything was terribly destroyed; but in the near distance, Grandpa was in another tree! Soon it was calm; both Grandpa and Sam came down from the trees and rushed to hug each other, and then they hugged the trees with tears of gratitude.
