Nowadays, we have kinds of technologies to protect us from different disasters. We even know where and when some disasters, like the typhoon, come. While most of the new technologies are far away from us, some around us can help people in disasters.
The drone (无人机) is one of them. It can be used to send food, water and other important things when a natural disaster happens. Very often the buildings are too dangerous for rescue (救援) teams to get in. They can make the drone fly into the buildings to search for those who are still alive first.
Social media is also a useful tool when it comes to natural disasters. With its help, people can know about the natural disasters before they hit. And some social media platforms allow people to mark themselves as safe after disasters so others can know their status.
Social media is also a place for up-to-the-minute news, so people can learn what is going on in the disaster areas. Besides, many social media platforms allow people to donate money to help people in disaster areas. The money will help them get back to their normal life as soon as possible. For example, livestreaming (直播) helped raise a lot of money for Henan after the flood in 2021.
Although these technologies can help when there is a natural disaster, we still need to prepare necessary tools and learn important skills to protect ourselves.

(Chu Wenwen, a girl born in 1994, set up True Nature Conservation Association (瞳之初自然保护协会) to protect wild animals in China. Here’s an interview with her. )
Host: Would you like to share your childhood stories with us
Chu: Sure. I’ve been hiking with my father in the wild since I was two years old. I spent my whole childhood in the Altai Mountains, Xinjiang. As there were no other children playing with me, wild animals became my best friends. In 2001, I got my first camera and started taking pictures of them. Of all the animals, I paid most attention to beavers (河狸).
Host: Why did you care more about beavers
Chu: There used to be 162 families of Mengxin beavers in China, of which only 38 were in the reserve. The other beaver families were in great danger. Most of the beaver babies born each year couldn’t survive. What’s worse, willow shrubs (柳树灌木), beavers’ most important food, became fewer and fewer several years ago. ___▲___ . So I wanted to do something to save them.
Host: So what did you decide to do
Chu: In 2018, I started a project. Over 1 million Internet users donated their snack money to it. Later, about 400,000 willow shrubs were planted with the money.
Host: What makes you devote yourself to the work
Chu: My father has spent most of his life in the wild. Influenced by what I saw and heard in the childhood, and with my deep love for nature, I have chosen to do the work. My father handed 162 beaver families over to me. and I wanted to make sure that when I handed them over to the next beaver protector. there would be no Jess than 162 families. Luckily, with the support of kind people, the number of beaver families has increased from 162 to 190 over the past four years. I believe more and more people will join us to do something helpful for these animals.
Host: You really did a great job!

A. It caused many beavers to die of hunger. B. Beavers are good at building things.

A. Chu wanted to save all the beaver families.

Since the start of COVID-19, many people have been spending much time indoors. Online classes and working from home mean a lot of sitting at your desk or in your chair.
(1) ______ And we may even get heart problems and other physical illnesses because of it. But new studies have shown that it could harm our mental (心理的) health too.
In one study, experts surveyed 937 Brazilian adults during the early period of COVID-19. (2) ______ And it was also reported that people who sat for too long often showed more symptoms of depression (抑郁的症状).
(3) ______ It found that one more hour of sitting time at the ages of 12, 14 and 16 led to higher depression scores by age 18. 18-year-olds who sat often had depression scores 28 percent higher than those who were active.
Scientists are not sure about the connection between too much sitting and depression. But Mats Hallgren from the K arolinska Institute in Sweden has discovered that sitting too much can slow blood flow (流动) in the body, including blood flow to the brain. It might also influence the growth of neurons in the brain. And people who sit a lot may also do other unhealthy things while sitting, such as snacking on junk food. (4) ______
Luckily, it’s not difficult to overcome. Aaron Kandola from University College London says all kinds of movements can be helpful, even light activity. “Anything you can do to avoid long-time sitting will clearly help with mood, stress and thinking,” Kandola says. (5) ______

On August 17th, there was a mudslide (泥石流) in Quan’an Village in Sichuan. Thanks to Wu Suzhen, a common villager, no one got hurt or died in the natural disaster.
It happened at midnight. Wu was about to sleep when she noticed a crevice (裂缝) on the ground. At the same time, she heard some noises of falling stones. She was aware that there was something wrong, and she called the village leader and told him about it at once. As Wu and her family ran out of their house, she raised her voice and tried to wake up others door to door. But most villagers were asleep, so they didn’t hear her shouts at all.
Soon, an emergency (紧急事件) group made up of leaders and volunteers arrived. They beat the gong (锣) to give the warning to the villagers. With the help of them, all the villagers were taken to a safe place within 10 minutes. Just half an hour later, part of the village was buried (掩埋) by the mudslide with a loud crash. “When we went back to the village, we were surprised to see many houses had come down,” one of the leaders said in fear.
In the early time, the village often spread the knowledge about disasters and their prevention among villagers. “The leaders told us that once we found an unusual situation, we must report it to them right away,” Wu said. Besides, the leaders and volunteers took action in time before the disaster. Maybe these were reasons why this emergency was dealt with so properly.
1. How many deaths did the mudslide cause
2. What did Wu do as soon as she found something unusual
3. Who woke up the sleeping villagers
4. How did the leader feel when he returned to the village after the disaster
5. What knowledge was often spread among villagers

Dear Betty,
Good news for you! We are going to visit the Wildlife Park this Saturday. Here is some information you need to know.
First of all, every student is supposed to arrive at the school gate before 1 p.m. The trip will last for four hours. All of us will go to the park by school bus. When we get to the park, we’ll take a train to travel around because it’s very big. We’ll stop at animals’ houses, where we can watch wild animals closely. During the visit, the guide will tell us the stories about them. As an animal-lover, you’ll surely love the trip. Remember to take a notebook and a camera, which can help you record some important things. Since eating food is not allowed in the park, you shouldn’t take any snacks.
Well, that’s what you need to pay attention to. I hope we can have a good time in the park.
Yours,
Li Hua
