过去进行时的结构：
was/were+doing .
when和while都可以表示“当......的时候”，引导时间状语从句。那when和while两者用法有什么区别呢？

1 .(1).when意为“在……时刻或时期”，它可兼
指“时间点”与“时间段”，所引导的从句的动词
既可以是终止性动词，也可是持续性动词。
When the teacher came in, they were drawing a tiger.

(2).while只指"时间段"，不指"时间点"，从句的动词
只限于持续性动词。如
My mother was watching TV last night,
while my father was playing games.

2.(1)When 说明从句的动作和主句的动作可以是同时的，也可以是先后发生。
(2)While则强调主句的动作和在从句动作发生的过程中或主从句两个动作同时发生。
The boy fell asleep when/ while I was reading.
3.(1)由when引导的时间状语从句，主句用过去进行时，从句应用一般过去时。
(2)如果从句和主句的动作同时发生，两句都用过 去进行时的时候，多用while引导。

They were singing while we were dancing.

4.When和while还可以作并列连词，when表示在那时，while表示“而，却”，表示对照关系。 如
The children were running to move the bag of rice when they heard the sound of a motor bike.
He is strong while his brother is weak.
