B卷——大题提能练
Ⅰ.阅读理解
(2021·广东化州一模)Nature is like a great magician, performing wonders on Earth. One of them is the Amazon rainforest, the world's largest and home to millions of plants and animals. Nicknamed “the lungs of our planet”, it generates about one fifth of Earth's oxygen. However, this wonderful natural wonder is currently in dange.
Thousands of fires have broken out in Brazil, endangering much of the rainforest. These blazes have lasted several weeks and are believed to be the “most intense” in almost a decade, according to BBC News.
The Amazon has seen a large number of fires in 2019. Between January and August, there were over 74,000 fires the highest number since 2013, the BBC reported.
Forest fires are common during the dry season, which runs from July to October. They are usually caused by natural events, such as lightning strikes. However, most of the fires this year are believed to be caused by farmers, who use fire as a traditional part of tropical agriculture to clean land, reported CNN.
The disaster has raised concern around the world. The Amazon rainforest is important for preventing climate change, said the BBC, absorbing millions of tons of carbon annually. When trees are cut down or burned, the rainforest's capacity (能力) to absorb carbon is reduced.
Brazilian climate expert Carlos Nobre told Reuters he's worried. If more than 20 percent of the ecosystem is destroyed, the Amazon rainforest could reach a “tipping point (临界点)” where the thick jungle will turn into a tropical savannah (大草原).
Nobre warned that it is not far off, with between 15 and 17 percent of the rainforest having already been destroyed.
The Brazilian government has sent soldiers to fight the fires. Many people have offered their support and called for recovery efforts. For example, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, said he wanted to donate money and US Actor Leonardo DiCaprio's environmental charity, Earth Alliance, created a donation fund to help deal with the crisis.
The public are also encouraged to donate to charities concerned with rainforest preservation (保护).“Every little bit helps in a tragic situation like this,” commented Gizmodo.

Ⅱ.七选五
(2021·浙江效实中学一模)“You totally missed out!” This sentence strikes fear in the hearts of teenagers more than almost anything else. In fact, missing out on something bothers most teenagers so much that there is even a special word for that sick feeling: FOMO. 1. FOMO, which was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2013, refers to that anxious feeling people get when they realize they are not attending a social event.
2. In fact, one survey found that two third of people in this age group admitted to experiencing FOMO regularly. If you ask teenagers whether they experience social media anxiety, most would answer no. But what they do not realize is that if they are stressed or worried about what they see online, then they are possibly experiencing FOMO, especially if they are online a lot.
Then how to handle the problem of FOMO Of course, turning off the technology seems like a natural cure for FOMO. 3. Teenagers may still worry that they are missing out, even if they are not on social media at all.
The key is to turn off the technology and do something else like reading a book, giving a friend a makeup, baking cookies—anything that allows them to focus on something other than social media. 4.
It is also important to encourage teenagers to recognize that they cannot possibly be everywhere and do everything. So, naturally, there will be parties or events that they cannot attend. 5. Photos can be deceiving (骗人的). And even though it looks as if their friends are having a good time, this may not be the case. They should never let the fact that they couldn't be somewhere affect their view of themselves.
A.FOMO has become an even bigger problem.
B.FOMO is especially common to people aged 18 to 33.
C.In simple terms, FOMO stands for “fear of missing out”.
D.It can be extremely helpful in changing their attitudes towards life.

Honourable Mayor,
I'm Li Hua, an exchange student from China studying in George High School. I've noticed there are no street lights along the small lanes in the nearby Civic Center Park. Due to the unavailability of street lights, several minor accidents such as falling over an object have happened in the park.
This park is very popular with the residents and a brighter lit park will encourage more people to use it conveniently. May I suggest that the city council look into installing lights along the small lanes to allow better visibility in the park
Thank you for considering my suggestion.
Yours sincerely,

Ⅱ.读后续写
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
(2021·山东淄博模拟)I woke up at 5:30 a.m. after a restless night's sleep. I slowly unzipped the tent door to inspect the new day. Just like yesterday, the wind had dropped. It was another beautiful Arctic day. I crawled out of my sleeping bag unwillingly. I am normally a morning person but the intense cold outside made that morning most unappealing. Anyhow, it was time to greet Charlie and start the day.
My dog Charlie was up and it was bouncing up and down at the end of his chain looking well rested. I poured what looked like a pound of dog food into his bowl.
Stepping out of the tent, I looked around for bears or tracks and saw none. It would never be a good thing to meet a polar bear. An Inuit (因纽特人) once told me that I should watch out for polar bears. He said that if I met a polar bear, I should keep the following rules in mind. First, keep eye contact, move sideways or slightly forward, never backward, stay calm. Do not show fear and stand beside a large object to make myself appear as large as possible. Weapons like flare gun (信号枪) are necessary, but do not shoot unless forced to. Don't wound a bear, or you'll make it even more dangerous, and never run.
It was only six o'clock, so I decided to have a leisurely breakfast of a bowl of milk powder, coconut flakes, and butter mixed with warm water. I sat on my sled (雪橇) to enjoy my first breakfast of the expedition only to find that after the third spoonful it was frozen. So much for leisurely breakfast! I added more warm water and ate the rest as fast as possible.
Suddenly I heard a deep, long growl coming from Charlie's throat. In a flash I looked at him and then in the direction in which he was staring, it was a female polar bear followed by two cubs (幼崽) slowly, purposefully, toward me. They were two hundred yards away.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
With my heart quickening, I grabbed my loaded flare gun and carefully walked sideways a few steps to Charlie.
The whole event lasted fifteen minutes but seemed years long.
One possible version:
With my heart quickening, I grabbed my loaded flare gun and carefully walked sideways a few steps to Charlie. Without taking my eyes off the bear, I led him to the sled and fastened his chain to a rope. The bear was getting closer. Remembering all the Inuit had told me, I fired a warning shot to the bear's left. But on she came. Then, I fired a flare right in front of her. She stopped and looked at me. Then she fixed her eyes on Charlie, who was barking wildly. She looked back at her cubs and waited for them to catch up, then finally moved away toward my right.
The whole event lasted fifteen minutes but seemed years long. My hands were shaking as I stood still, watching the three slowly move north. But despite the fear, I could feel deep down inside a real satisfaction. I now know that I could stand up to a bear in the wild and stay calm enough to function and still remember the words from the Inuit. With Charlie's help I had passed my first test.
