My name is Mildred Hondorf, a music teacher. Over the years, I have found that children have many levels of musical ability. Although I have some talented students, I've also had my share of what I call "musically challenged" pupils. One such student was Robby.
Robby was 11 years old when he came for his first piano lesson. He said that it had always been his mother's dream to hear him play the piano. Although Robby tried hard, he lacked the basic rhythm needed to be excellent. However, he continued and always said, "My mom's going to hear me play some day." But he just did not have any inborn ability and his mother just dropped Robby off but never stopped in.
Then one day, Robby stopped coming to our lessons. He called me and said his mother was sick. Several weeks later, I was invited to take my students to have a show and Robby asked me if he could be in . "Miss Hondorf...I've just got to play!" I don't know what led me to allow him to play in the show. Maybe it was his insistence or something else inside of me.
The night for the show came. The gymnasium was packed with people. I put Robby up last in the program. I thought that any damage he would do would come at the end of the program and I could always save his poor performance through my "curtain closing".
The show went off well. Then Robby came up on stage. He played so well and everyone applauded for him. In tears I hugged Robby in joy. "How would you do it "
"Well, Miss Hondorf ... remember I told you my mom was sick Well, actually, she had cancer and passed away this morning. And well ... she was born deaf so tonight was the first time she ever heard me play. I wanted to make it special."
24.What are “musically challenged” pupils according to the author’s description
A.Children who are good at learning music.
B.Children who like challenging music.
C.Children who lack a gift for music.
D.Children who are crazy about music.
25.Why did the author put Robby’s performance at last
A.She hoped Robby would give the show a good ending.
B.She thought Robby would have a bad performance.
C.She gave Robby a chance to have a speech.
D.She wanted Robby to help her lower the curtain.
26.What made Robby succeed in the show
A.His teacher’s encouragement. B.His love to his mother.
C.His enthusiasm about music. D.His talent and practice.
27.What do we know about the teacher
A.She had a great deal of confidence in Robby at first.
B.She helped Robby practice before the performance.
C.She was surprised that Robby performed well at last.
D.She was inexperienced in instructing students like Robby.

If you see a group of kids hitting and abusing an animal, would you stop them
Would you at least call the police Again people would walk away. Some people do not believe that animal abuse is a big issue. Every day animals are abused in their homes or on the streets. It seems as if politicians do nothing to stop this issue. Everyone is worried about education and global warming. What about animals We should not ignore them just because they cannot talk to us. Animals, like us humans, have rights. Every living being has the right to warm shelter and good food, but most importantly, they have the right to be wanted and loved. They have the right to be a special, much loved member of their own family.
There are many organizations that deal with abused animals or animals that have no home like ASPCA, PETA, the Humane Society and many more. There are organizations that deal with this issue, but that does not mean that we still shouldn’t help. The biggest saying that bothers me is, “I’m only one person. I can’t make a difference.” If everyone thought like that, we wouldn’t have the organizations and loving people who help the world every day. By helping one animal, you are making a difference.
There are many things you can do right now to help animals around your neighborhood. You can volunteer at your local animal shelter, raise money for animal shelters, inform your community about animal abuse or you can write to your representatives and tell them that animal abuse needs to be taken seriously.
As you walk down the street, try to help any animals you see walking around. You can easily buy a cheap box of dry cat or dog food to feed the animals. If we don’ t help our animal now, we may never have animals again. Always remember that with every step you take, you help save an animal’s life and isn’t that worth fighting for
28.Some people won’t stop kids from abusing animals because ______.
A. they are too busy to worry about the animals
B. they don’t take animal abuse seriously
C. they just leave it to the police
D. they are afraid of being laughed at
29.We can learn from the text that ASPCA ______.
A. is another name for the Humane Society
B. provides shelter for both animals and humans
C. deals with such issues as education and global warming
D. aims at protecting animals from being abused
30.Which of the following statements will the author agree with
A. Dogs have the right to be treated kindly.
B. One person cannot possibly make a difference.
C. Cruelty to animals deserves more attention than global warming.
D. It is the politicians’ duty to stop animal abuse.
31.The main purpose of the text is to ______.
A. criticize those who abuse animals
B. call on people to stop animal abuse
C. show how animals are abused
D. explain why people abuse animals

Every society has its own special expressions, and ways of saying things. One popular expression in the United States is “hitting the books”. It means studying a subject with great effort.
One of the great challenges for students is taking tests. The students must do well on the test to advance. A student who hits the books spends long hours preparing for a test. They read all their books carefully, and then read them a second time, and very often a third time. They make sure they know all the material the teacher has offered and prepare for every possible question. They study every night. They are “hitting the books.”
In the United States, most children begin attending school when they are six years old. Public education is free and most children go to schools near their homes. Schooling in these early years is fun. The children learn to read and write. But they also play games and go on trips. There is no reason at such an early age for them to hit the books.
This situation changes as children become older. The subjects become more difficult. Students must learn world history, math, and the life sciences. Tests become more common. Pressure is growing to hit the books, study hard and advance.
However, most serious students only really begin hitting the books for long hours when they reach high school.
High school students who hope to stop their education at a college or university must take a special national test called the S-A-T. The test has two parts. The first part tests the students’ ability with numbers and mathematical skills, the second part tests the students’ ability in the English language.
The S-A-T test is very important. A high school student who gets a high score on the two parts of the test has a good opportunity to enter a top American college. For this reason, many students hit the books for months to prepare for the S-A-T.
All this adds up to a lot of work, studying, “hitting the books”. Knowledge is a prize that is not easy to gain.
32.Students have many great challenges, one of which is ______.
A.reading books B.taking tests
C.attending school D.learning to write
33.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A.American students don’t have to pay for their education
B.High school students in the U. S. don’t have to hit the books.
C.It is not easy for high school students to enter a top American college.
D.American students at an early age learn a lot of subjects.
34.The S-A-T is ______.
A.an international test B.a special language test
C.a special mathematical test D.a special national test
35.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage
A.Public Education in the United States.
B.The S-A-T Test.
C.Hitting the Books.
D.How to Gain knowledge.

She waited for a long time before the pharmacist(药剂师) turned around and asked her. “And what do you want ” “Well, it’s about my brother,” Michelle answered. “He’s really, really sick… and I want to buy a miracle.”
“I beg your pardon ” said the pharmacist. “His name is Jack and he has something very bad growing inside his body and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost ”
“We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said. “Listen, I have the money to pay for it.” And with these words, Michelle poured out all the coins from her pockets. At this time, a well-dressed man behind Michelle stooped down and asked the little girl. “I’m selling the miracle you want. Tell me how much money you have”.
“One dollar and eleven cents.” Michelle answered in a low voice. “And it’s all the money I have, but I can get some more .”
