The sixth period (2a-2e)
Good morning! Teachers and judges. I’m Qiankun. It’s my great honor to stand here to share my teaching ideas with you. Today I’m going to talk about the sixth period in Section B of unit 5 What were you doing when the rainstorm came , which is taken from Go for it, Book4. My presentation consists of six parts: analysis of the teaching material, analysis of the students, teaching methods, learning methods, teaching procedures and blackboard design.
Part One Analysis of the teaching material
一、Status and Function
This unit is mainly about telling past events using the past progressive tense. Let the students talk about what people were doing when the relevant events happened. The content of this unit is closely related to students’ daily life, so it’s easy to encourage them to communicate with others by using what they have learned in this class.
二、Teaching aims
1. Knowledge Objects
Master new words, phrases and key sentences.
Master the past progressive tense.
2. Ability Objects
How to use the past progressive tense in the adverb clause of time leaded by when.
3. Moral Objects
Lead Students to learn the sense of self-protection in time of difficulty.
三、Teaching key and difficult points
Master the sentence pattern of past progressive tense.
How to use the past progressive tense in the adverb clause of time leaded by when.
Part Two Analysis of the students
The students have learned simple progressive tense and they can express their thought and communicate with each other in English well. And all the students will be interested in the topic about their past experience, which is related to their real life. It’s helpful for our study of this lesson.
Part Three Teaching methods
1. Communicative teaching method
2. Situational teaching method
3. “Task-based”teaching method
As we all know: the main instructional aims of learning English in the Middle School is to cultivate students’ abilities of listening, speaking, reading, writing and their good sense of the English language. So in this lesson I’ll mainly use “communicative” teaching method, “Situational” teaching method and“Task-based”teaching method.

Part Five Teaching procedures
Step 1 Warming up
Show the video “I have a dream”.
Free talk about the speech.
Step 2 Revision (Play a guessing game)
Lead students to describe the pictures using the past progressive tense by giving the past time.
Summarize the structure of past continuous tense and let students make sentences.
Step 3 Presentation
1. Give pictures and guide to say the new words and phrases.
Watch a video of “911” and introduce the topic: Do You Remember What You Were Doing
Look at three pictures and ask students to answer the questions using past progressive tense.
2. Show the reading strategy.
3. Fast reading
Look through the whole passage and answer two questions.
4. Careful reading
Read the passage again and circle the sentence “T” or “F”, correct the false sentences.
Step 4 Listening
Listen to the whole passage and fill in the blanks.
Step5. Practice
Underline sentences from the passage with similar meanings to the ones below.
Invite several students to check the answers.
Step6. Report
Divide Students into groups and choose a reporter for each group.
The reporter interviews the group members with “An important event they remembered” and make a report.
Step7. Summary and exercises
1. Get students to tell us what they have got in the class.
Invite one student to write down the important phrases on the blackboard.
2. Do some exercises to consolidate what they have learned today.
Step8. Homework
1. Remember the words and phrases in this lesson.
2. Write a passage about an event that you remember well. Give dates and say why you remember it, and what you were doing at the time when you heard the news.
