语篇(一)
I didn’t get into the swim team and I had to wait another year to try out again. What was more, I was taking some difficult classes this year, and my best friend moved away.
Dad knew I was feeling pressure. He sat next to me and asked me to help him make bread. In the kitchen, Dad gave me one apron(围裙). Next, Dad took out his mixing bowl and a pair of chopsticks, and told me to stir(搅拌) the things in it. After stirring into dough(面团) for five minutes. Dad told me to use my hand to push the dough for another five minutes.
Next came the most difficult and surprising part---doing nothing. We waited for more than an hour for the dough to slowly double in size. Next, we pushed the dough again, divided it into two parts and waited for the dough to rise again. After that, we put the dough into pans(平底锅) and waited another hour for the dough to rise and double for the last time.Dad said, “It’s hard not to put the dough directly into the oven, but if you do,the bread will be small, and the bread will be hard.”
While he waited,we sat and talked. The dough was going to rise at its own speed. We could do nothing to make it rise faster. As I accepted that, I stopped watching the clock and playing with my fingers on the tabletop. I started enjoying the quiet time with Dad. I learned to relax and let the bread rise.

语篇(三)
When Matty Sallin, 34, was working on a degree in art and technology at New York University, he got interesting homework in electronic class. He decided to invent an alarm clock.
“Everybody has to stand it every day, and it is really unpleasant!” he says. He asked different people what they would like to be woken up instead of a noisy alarm. A lot of them said, “The smell of bacon(培根肉)”.
So Sallin and two classmates invented a new kind of alarm clock: a wooden box with a pig face and a digital clock that uses the smell of cooking bacon instead of the sound to wake someone up. He explains, “There’s no danger of burning, because I built it carefully. It uses halogen light bulbs(钨卤灯)instead of a fire for cooking and turns off automatically(自动地)after ten minutes. Yes, the clock itself can do it. Just a few easy steps are needed to set the alarm.”
“What you do is to put some frozen bacon in the night before and set the alarm,” says Sallin. “If you set the alarm for 8:00, it will turn on at 7:50 and slowly cook for ten minutes under the logen bulbs,” he says. Then the bulbs turn off and a fan blows the smell out through the nose of the pig.
“So instead of an alarm, you get a bacon smell awake,” says Sallin. “Then you can open the door on the side and pull the bacon out and eat it.”
When Sallin was a kid, he spent a lot of time making drawings of inventions. “I wanted to make a lift in my backyard and a special tree house,” he says. “But I never really thought I could be called an inventor!”
Sallin got an A in the class and went on to other things-but people continue to hear about his invention and email him every day asking where they can buy his alarm clock.
3.What’s the most probable title for this passage
A.A Special “Smell” Clock B.Interesting Homework C.A Great Inventor D.The Smell of Bacon
语篇(四)
If there's one thing I've learned from my years of being a kid, it's that you have ZERO control over your own life.
Ever since school ended, I haven't had anything I've needed to do or anywhere I've needed to be. As long as the air-conditioning was working and the TV remote had batteries in it, I was ready for a relaxing summer holiday.
But then, out of the blue, this happened-- “Pack your bags. We're going on a road trip!” Mom said excitedly.
This isn't the first time Mom has sprung a trip on us without any warning. Last year on the first day of summer, she said we were going to visit Aunt Loretta at the nursing home.
It wasn't my idea of fun way to kick off the summer. One time when we visited Aunt Loretta, her roommate grasped me and wouldn't let me go until someone gave her a chocolate cookie!
Mom kept talking about going to the nursing home for a whole day, which made me worry a lot. But at breakfast the next morning she told us where we were really going-Disney World.
I was very happy, because I was really worried about spending the whole week at the nursing home. So was Dad. But when my little brother, Danny, heard about the change he became very angry.
Mom had talked up the Aunt Loretta trip so much that Danny was actually excited about going there.
We ended up putting off our trip to Disney so we could visit Aunt Loretta.
I tried to talk Mom into letting us do something normal, like going to a water park for the day, but she didn't want to hear it. She said that spending a lot of time together in the car would be a “bonding” experience for the whole family.
4. The author wrote the passage to ________.
A. remember his mother B. tell the story of his aunt
C. express his love for his brother D. share his childhood experiences
语篇(五)
When I was a little child, I was crazy about stories of magic. I read books where wizards and warriors(巫师和勇士) fought the powers of darkness in strange worlds. I became happy when they succeeded bringing peace and happiness to their lands. I guessed like most of the readers of these stories, I secretly wished for magical powers for myself. I wanted to be able to make my pain disappear, to make my problems go away, and to have power over this world.
As I got older, however, I realized that there was no such thing as magic and the real but hard life started. I struggled through a long period of poverty(贫穷). I had daily pain from a back hurt that never became right. I felt sad when both of my sons were badly ill. I still sometimes daydreamed of magic but in time even that gradually disappeared.
Then one day I was not sure when I began to discover a different kind of magic. This magic grew stronger in my heart, soul, and mind day by day and year by year. This magic was called LOVE. It didn't change my poverty but it made every day of my life feel richer. It didn't make my back pain go away but it helped me deal with it much better. It didn't make me a soldier or hero but it helped me to drive away the darkness of this world with my own light.
There is such a thing as magic in this world. There is such a thing as magic in each one of us. This magic is called LOVE. Choose it, share it, and live in it every single day of your life. Use it to help others, and to make the world more wonderful.
5.What does the writer mainly tell us
A.Most of the children like reading magic stories. B.Everybody can become a great wizard or warrior.
C.Everybody has the “power”of making the world better. D.It's not easy to change the world on our own.

My birthday present from my children came in the mail a little early this year. I opened it. It was a new record player to play my old records on. I set it up in my bedroom. It looked like a black briefcase(公文包)but it had speakers built into the sides. And when I opened it up there was a turntable(唱机转盘)ready to go. I ran over to the collection that I had kept since childhood and pulled out a 35-year-old record. I took it out of its old box and placed it gently on the turntable. I pushed on the power button. Then suddenly the sweet sound of music flowed from the record player into my ears and down to my soul. It was one of those moments of joy that made life so wonderful.
I closed my eyes and followed the sound. In my mind I was fourteen years old again, singing and dancing to the music in my Mom's living room.
I opened my eyes again and smiled. My old pet dog was afraid that I might start singing soon. It turned and ran out of the door. My young pet dog, however, jumped around my feet and barked(犬吠)happily while I danced with joy to the sweet sounds coming from my birthday present.
I have been so lucky because there are so many sweet sounds in this life.I have heard the first birds singing in the spring. I have heard the wind blowing through the trees. I have heard my newborn babies' first cries. I have heard children laughing and playing.I have heard the wonderful words, “I love you.” I have heard beautiful music. I hope to keep adding the sounds of my own love, laughter, kindness and joy to this beautiful world too.

My son Joey was born with something wrong with his feet. The doctors told us that with treatment he would be able to walk normally-but would never run very well. The first three years of his life were spent in the hospital. By the time he was eight, you wouldn't know he had a problem when you saw him walk.
The children in our neighborhood ran around during play, and Joey would jump right in and run and play, too. We never told him that he probably wouldn't be able to run as well as the other children. So he didn't know.
In seventh grade he decided to go out for the cross-country team. Every day he trained with the team. He worked harder and ran more than any of the others. Perhaps he sensed that the abilities that seemed to come naturally to others did not come naturally to him. Although the entire team ran, only the top seven runners could score points for the school. We didn't tell him he probably would never make the team, so he didn't know.
He continued to run four to five miles a day, every day--even the day he had a fever. I was worried, so I went to look for him after school.I found him running all alone. I asked him how he felt. “Okay,” he said. The sweat ran down his face. Yet he looked straight ahead and kept running. We never told him he couldn't run four miles with a fever. So he didn't know.
Two weeks later, the names of the team runners were called. Joey was number six on the list. Joey had made the team. He was in seventh grade (the other six team members were all eighth-graders). We never told him he shouldn't expect to make the team. We never told him he couldn't do it. So he didn't know. He just did it.
7.What's the best title for this passage
A.Joey is a good boy. B.Something wrong with Joey's feet.
C.We never told him he couldn't do it. D.I'm proud of Joey.

语篇(一)
Most of us have many pencils. But do you know how these common writing tools came into being
It started in Rome
The first example of a pencil-type instrument probably came from ancient Rome. There, a thin piece of metal was used to draw onto an early form of paper. It was also used to write down numbers on the page.
England's find
Around 1564, graphite(石墨)was discovered near Cumbria, England. It was regarded as a perfect way to record their sheep at that time. But the graphite was very soft. So people provided it with a covering.
Italian changes
A couple from Italy thought of a better idea. They hollowed(掏空)out a wooden stick and then placed graphite stick inside it. This created a wooden holder for the graphite.
German improvements
In 1839, Germany's Lothar von Faber invented a way to make graphite sticks all the same. He also invented a machine to cut the pencil wood.
American production
By the late 1860s in America, pencils were in great need. American companies began designing machines to produce them. It helped meet the need and cut the cost of pencils by 50%.
Japanese ideas
In 1915, Japan's Tokuji Hayakawa created a mechanical pencil(自动笔)which was similar to one used now.
Today both kinds of pencils are very popular with the wooden pencil being number one. More than 6 billion wooden pencils are produced in 40 different countries each year.
1. Which is the best title for this passage
A. The Kinds of Pencils. B. The Use of pencils.
C. The Inventors of Pencils D. The History of Pencils.
语篇(二)
Have you noticed that time seems to pass more slowly when you’re waiting in a long line But when you’re playing with your friends hours seem like minutes. Of course, time is always passing at the same speed--but why does it sometimes feel different
A study published in the Journal of Neuroscience(神经科学杂志)can tell us the answer. Lead author Masamichi Hayashi and his research team in the US found that it has to do with neurons(神经元)in our brains that are sensitive(敏感的) to time.
The researchers measured(测量)the brain activity of 18 adults who were asked to look at a picture on a screen for a certain period of time. They were then asked to guess how long they’d been looking at the picture. They were likely to guess incorrectly when they were asked to stare at the picture for very long or very short periods of time.
After looking at their brain activity, the researchers found neurons need a certain amount of time to pass signals. When they receive repetitive stimulation(重复的刺激)(such as staring at a screen), these neurons finally get tired and don’t work well. It doesn’t matter whether this amount of time is long or short, as long as the stimulation is repetitive. However, other neurons still work normally, causing a different experience of time.
When you stand in line or do some other repetitive task, such as math homework, your time-sensitive neurons get tired and cause you to feel like time is going slowly. But when you’re doing something more high- speed, such as playing soccer, you experience in the opposite way. Either way, you can’t always trust your brain when it comes to your experience of time.
2.Which is the best title for this passage
A.The repetitive stimulation. B.Neurons in our brains. C.Our experience of time D.The work of our brains.

Big data(数据)is a lot of sets of information that are put together so they can be used by a computer program. The computer program looks for different kinds of answers or patterns in the data. Big data can have different kinds of information from many sources, such as information that comes from schools, social media sites, companies and governments. One set of data can have people's names and addresses. Another set can have what they like, where they go to school, and how much time they spend on the computer.
Big data can be used in many ways. The government uses it to understand how many people travel on buses or trains. This information is then used to make bus or train systems better. Some schools use big data to understand which children may need extra help in class. The teacher can then give certain students more help or support so those students can succeed in panies use big data, too. It helps them understand who buys their products. For example, one company uses weather data to see when people eat the most ice cream.
Big data can be used for good reasons. Some hospitals use big data to predict if a baby who is born too early will get sick. The hospital can then take extra steps to take care of that baby so he or she does not get sick. Big data can also be used for bad reasons. It can be used to predict which kinds of people are likely to break the law or hurt others, even if they have not done anything wrong.
How can big data be used for good and bad things It is because the computer programs used to look at big data and understand it are written by people. People think a certain way. Because they think a certain way, they build a model of those ideas. These ideas are then used to look at the data.
Sometimes, these ideas are helpful for people or businesses. Other times, bad ideas can cause problems for certain groups of people.
3.What's the main idea of Paragraph 3
A.We can use big data in a number of ways.
B.We can use big data to prevent babies from getting sick.
C.Big data can be used for both good and bad reasons.
D.Big data can be used for good reasons.

Do you know any 9-year-olds who have started their own museums When Theodore Roosevelt(罗斯福) was only nine, he and two of his cousins opened the “Roosevelt Museum of Natural History.” The museum was in Theodore's bedroom. It had a total of 12 specimens(标本). On display were a few seashells, some dead insects and some birds nests. Young Roosevelt took great pride in his small museum.
Born in New York in 1858, Theodore Roosevelt was not always healthy. “I was a sickly, delicate boy.” he once wrote. Roosevelt had a health condition called asthma(哮喘). He often found it hard to breathe. Instead of playing, he observed(观察)nature and then read and wrote about it.
Roosevelt's interest in nature sometimes got him into trouble. Once, his mother found several dead mice in the box. She ordered him to throw them out. This was indeed “a loss to science,” Roosevelt said later.
Because Roosevelt was often sickly as a boy, his body was small and weak. When he was about 12, his father asked him to improve his body. Roosevelt began working out in a gym. He didn't become strong quickly. But he did decide to face life's challenges with a strong spirit. That determination stayed with Roosevelt his whole life. And finally, his body did get strong. As an adult, he was an active, healthy person. He enjoyed adventures and loved the outdoors.
In 1900, at the age of 41, Roosevelt was elected Vice President. A year later, President McKinley, was shot and killed. Roosevelt became the 26th President of the USA. At 42, he was the youngest leader the country had ever had.
4. What is the main idea of the first paragraph
A. Roosevelt’s museum had 12 specimens. B. Roosevelt had two cousins.
C. Roosevelt was a brave man. D. Roosevelt had a small museum as a boy.

The Vine That Ate the South
Kudzu is a fast-growing vine(蔓生植物) that covers a large area in the southern United States. It is so common that one might think it is a native plant, but it is not. Kudzu was brought to the United States from Japan in 1876. Many Americans thought it was beautiful, and they began to plant it. They didn't know it could grow up to a foot a day during the summer months. Nor did they know it would grow up and over anything in its ways.
In Japan, kudzu experienced cold winters and a short growing season. But in the United States, it has a very long growing season with warm and wet southern weather. It is fine weather for the vine to grow fast.
In the 1920s, people used the vine to feed farm animals. Ten years later, the government supported to plant kudzu because it kept soil(土壤) from washing away. However, by the 1950s, the government no longer wanted people to plant the vine. Twenty years after that, the government said it was a harmful plant.
The vine grows up trees and buildings, making some beautiful shapes. However, trees die after kudzu covers them because they can not get enough light. Scientists are looking for ways to kill the vine. They used poisons(毒药) to kill the vine. However, some of the poisons made it grow even better. Scientists also find it difficult to dig up Kudzu. The plant is really tough.
Because kudzu is so hard to kill, some people are making the best of it. So they try to find different uses for the vine. They find the vine can be used to make paper and baskets, it can be used to feed the goats, and it can even be eaten by people. Scientists are studying it in the hope that the vine can be used as a medicine. At the very least, kudzu serves as an example of the unexpected results that can come from non-native plants.
5. The last paragraph is mostly about_________.
A. how quickly the vine grows B. how people use the vine
C. why people want to kill the vine D. why people eat the vine
语篇(六)
Scientists have been surprised at the long-distance(长途的) journey of a cuckoo,a common bird flying from southern Africa to Mongolia.
Onon is a common cuckoo. He’s one of 5 cuckoos tagged(给……加上标签) last summer in Mongolia. These tags allowed the scientists to follow the moving of the birds on a map. Onon spent the winter in southern Africa---in Zambia. This spring, Onon returned to Mongolia. In just some months, Onon flew more than 12,000 kilometers. He crossed 16 countries, flying at about 60 kilometers per hour.
Long-distance travel is common among sea birds, but cuckoos are land birds. “It was one of the longest animal journeys being recorded for a land bird,” said Chris Hewson, one of the project’s lead scientists.
At times, Onon stopped for a few hours or a few days. But some of the long way, like crossing the Indian Ocean, had to be done without stopping.
Long-distance travels like this are dangerous. The birds have to travel through strong winds and storms, make sure they find enough to eat, and avoid being eaten. Luckily, cuckoos seem to be good at finding helpful winds allowing them to travel long distances without getting too tired. Still, flying such long distances isn’t easy. Onon is the only one of the five tagged cuckoos making it all the way back to Mongolia.
Onon has arrived, but his story is far from over. He will spend up to some months enjoying his new location, before turning around and starting his incredible, long journey once again.
6.What is the main idea of the passage
A.More and more birds like to challenge themselves by flying a long way.
B.A special cuckoo got through different difficulties and saved his own life.
C.It’s unusual for land birds to travel a long distance in a short time.
D.A long-distance bird journey has made scientists feel amazed.

You’ve probably heard it many times by now. But here it goes again:Sleep is important.Your mental health(心理健康) and immune(免疫的) system are connected to your sleeping habits. So are your grades, a new study finds. Sleep accounts for(占……比例) nearly one-fourth of the difference among students’ grades in a class. So even if you spend hours studying for a test but get too little sleep, you might still do poorly.
Usually, people’s sleep schedules are messy and can not be known ahead of time. Professor Jeffrey Grossman of Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge wanted to see if sleep has something to do with people’s learning performance even when a study was done with people who kept such true-to-life schedules at home. So he turned to Fitbits, which can check how long people and how often they wake up. And the researchers looked for 100 students. They paid attention to these students’ sleep patterns in the days and weeks before exams and then compared them to these students’ test scores.
“How much time a person sleeps the night before an exam doesn’t affect that person’s grade.” Grossman says. “A student who sleeps 7 hours every night will do better than a student who sleeps 7.5 hours one night and 6.5 hours another night.”
“It’s important for people to know that if their Fitbits tell them that they have terrible sleep, that may not actually be so.” Michael Scullin, a sleep scientist at Baylor University says. Grossman also raises this point. Fitbit, Inc. makes this advanced tool. But it doesn’t share how its tool works. This leaves a question about whether the tool is really correct when checking a student’s sleep. Even so, Scullin emphasizes(强调) that there are enough data supporting ties between sleep and how well someone performs.
“Students need more sleep and less late evening use of phones and other screens. Even with after-school activities and schoolwork, they need to get enough sleep.” Grossman says.
7.What does the passage mainly talk about
A.Old peoples’ problems about sleep. B.Learning results and enough sleep.
C.High school students’ sleeping habits. D.Ways to improve learning interest.

Most of us have many pencils. But do you know how these common writing tools came into being(形成)
