The manatee is one of the most endangered animals in America. Today, with only a few thousand left in the world, these special ocean animals could easily die out.
Looking something like a cross between a dolphin and a hippo(河马)manatees have been described as “giant grey sweet potatoes ”. They are commonly known as sea cows because of their size and plant-based diet. Manatees live on sea grass, much like cows live on grass in fields. An adult manatee eats about 70 kg of sea grass every day. Growing up to 3 m long and weighing 1,000 kg or more, these gentle giants of the ocean are harmless. In fact, they are known to be friendly.
Manatees live in the shallow(浅的)coastal seas and rivers. They are long-lived animals, reaching ages of more than fifty years. However, they give birth to only one baby every two to five years.

Being slow swimmers near coasts, manatees are always in dan ger of being hit by fast-moving boats. Sometimes they also eat fishing hooks(鱼钩)or rubbish, or get caught in traps.
According to the Save the Manatee Club, almost 800 manatees died in 2009. The US state of Florida has set up special safe areas for them where boats are not allowed. They have also passed laws that require boats to slow down in areas of manatees’ homes.

Zhalong is a nature reserve in Heilongjiang in northeast China. It is one of the world’s most important wetlands. The area provides food and shelter for wildlife. It is an ideal home for different kinds of plants, fish and birds.
Many birds live comfortably in Zhalong Nature Reserve all year round, while some only stay for a short time. There are many fish in the wetlands, and the birds can easily catch them for food. Don’t you think that we have lost enough We have lost most of our natural resources (自然资源),and now we are going to lose animals!
Natural competition happens when species (物种) compete for food and living places. An example of an animal species influenced by this is the dinosaur.
We have caused animals to get endangered too. The pollution that we create destroys (破坏) many animals’ living places. An example of an animal species that has been influenced by pollution is the sea turtle. Overhunting is also a huge threat (威胁). When people overhunt, they catch too many of an animal species, so either not many animals are left, or no animals are left at all. Examples of some overhunted animals are the Bali tiger and the Atlantic cod. Cutting down trees is also very dangerous for animals. It leaves them with no place to live. Examples of some animals that have been influenced by this are many species in the Amazon Rainforest.
Many organizations such as WWF (World Wildlife Fund) are doing something to protect animals and the environment. They try to protect the living places of many endangered animals. They do research on the species and they educate people. Zoos also help. They let many endangered species live in a healthy and safe environment. Sometimes zoos might even let an endangered animal go back into the wild to try to raise population numbers again.
Not only the big organizations but also you can help. You can give away money or you can volunteer,or you can do the simplest thing of all—CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT!
37.What made the Bali tiger be in danger
A.Being short of living places. B.The pollution.

③They stop people from eating meat.
④ They make people realize the problem.

39.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage
A. B. C. D.
40.What is the purpose of the passage
A.To encourage people to protect endangered animals.

Zhalong Nature Reserve is an important living area for the rare red-crowned cranes. There are not many red-crowned cranes in the world. Some of them live in Zhalong.
Some people want to change the wetlands to make more space for farms and buildings. This means that there will be less and less space for wildlife.
More and more birds are in danger because they do not have enough living space. Many of them died. The Chinese government wants to protect these endangered birds, and they can be safe in Zhalong.
Every year a lot of tourists go to Zhalong to watch birds. This year members of our Bird watching Club are going to study the different kinds of birds in Zhalong and the changes in their numbers. The study begins next month.

范文:At present, as a consequence of human activities, many wild animals are endangered. Worse still, some of them may disappear forever.
There is no doubt that hunting wild animals has a bad influence. For one thing, it causes the imbalance of our ecosystem. For another, it leads to the spread of infectious diseases from animals to us human beings, such as SARS and Novel coronavirus.
As far as I am concerned, something must be done to stop this illegal act. Nature reserves ought to be built so as to offer more living space to wildlife. What’s more, we should never have wild animals for food, as they are part of environment.
