Unit 5 The Value of Money
A
You feel happiest when you create a healthy balance between giving and receiving. If you give and give without making time to fill your own needs, then it's likely you will burn out, or feel upset. When you take and take without giving anything back, you never feel a sense of achievement, so you are always searching for ways to fill the feeling of emptiness in your life.
The way to create a healthy balance between giving and receiving so as to achieve real happiness is to know and then live by your values. I break values up into two groups which I call “being” and “having” values. Your “being” values arc the character traits(特征) of the ideal person you would like to be. An example of some "being" values are: kind, loving, generous, inspirational, peaceful, wise and even powerful. By acting on these values, you give to others through your actions and you inspire others by “being” a positive role model. Mastering these “being” character traits becomes your life purpose.
Your “having” values are the feelings you need to create in order to be happy. These could be companionship, achievement, support, being valued or financial security. This is what you receive. You take responsibility for filling your own needs by taking steps to create these feelings and conditions in your life.
When you make a commitment to live by your “being” values, it becomes easier to make conscious choices rather than reactionary(保守的)ones. If your usual habit is to complain about your problems, you could choose to think and act like a calm person. A calm person might go for a walk, meditate(沉思),or set a time limit before responding. If your usual pattern is to worry, you could choose to act like a responsible or wise person. In other words, you would act like the person you choose to be this is the key to personal power.
When you choose to act on your values, you not only feel good about yourself, but you reinforce(增强) your chosen beliefs. Over time acting in this way changes how you see the world, and in turn the way other people think of you.
1.According to the text, by acting on your own “being” values, you will __________.
A.gain a lot of power B.fill your own needs C.seek all human virtues D.form positive personality
2.Which of the following does NOT belong to your “having” values
A.Your success in the competition. B.The support from your friends.
C.Your own peaceful mind. D.The friendship with others.
3.What can be inferred from the text
A.“Having” values are better than“being” values.
B.The way other people think of you decides who you are.
C.A calm person does not choose to complain easily.
D.A responsible person does not care about financial security.

A family in Florida had a happy Christmas this year thanks to two local police officers, who answered a 911 call only to discover there was no emergency at all.
When they arrived at the house of a single mother with two children, the officers discovered the younger child, about two years old, was playing with the phone. There were no signs of Christmas or holiday cheer in the house. "They weren't smiling. It seemed like they weren't happy at all. They were missing something," Officer Paramore said. "The mother mentioned that they weren't going to have a Christmas that year. It was pretty obvious that the family was struggling," he said. "So we told each other that something had to be done."
Paramore and his partner, Barry Ward, left the house with a plan. The next day, they went to a supermarket and bought a tree, lights and some ornaments(装饰物) with their own money. Then they returned to the apartment to deliver some holiday cheer. "They hugged the tree," Paramore said. "I was glad to see that this family was going to have something to sit around and use." The police department posted the video on YouTube, hoping to share the happy news and inspire others.
The department has received tons of donations and phone calls from people around the country asking how they can help the family. "We are covered," said Stephanie Slater, public information officer for the Boynton Beach Police Department. "We're asking people to do good in their communities on behalf of our officers. We appreciate it very much that people are talking about this after watching the news on TV because they need to see and need to be reminded that police officers are good guys," she said. Twenty years ago the most common ambition of American children was to be a teacher, followed by working in banking and finance, and then medicine. But today’s situation is quite different.①__________Instead they most commonly say they want to be a sports star, a pop star, or an actor—in other words, they hope to become a celebrity .
According to experts, young people desire these jobs largely because of the wealth and the fame. ②__________Let’s take athletes and singers as an example. Their careers are short-lived. Many athletes’ best time only lasts a few years and singers can have a very limited career. The field that was once the focus of their lives becomes something they have little or no involvement in. As a result, they’ll have a feeling of worthlessness and a lack of control.③__________The truth is quite simple: they have been so far removed from it for so long.
In spite of these disadvantages, there is greater ambition than ever among young people to achieve that status. They are not satisfied just making a living—they want to be rich and famous. Globally, more and more TV shows provide talent competitions where winners can achieve their goals in just a few weeks or months.④__________They unrealistically believe that this lifestyle is easily obtained and leads to great satisfaction.
While many people argue that there is nothing wrong with having such ambitions, others feel that this trend will finally lead to dissatisfaction as more and more people are unable to reach their goals.⑤__________That means they ignore the simple fact that great effort is needed before success. As a result, many people won’t realize their childhood dreams, which could have a negative effect on their happiness.
A. The younger generation don’t favor these professions any more.
B. In many ways this has been brought about by the celebrity culture.
C. Unfortunately, they do not always have a positive effect on people's life.
D. Besides, it can be difficult for them to adapt back to a normal everyday life.
E. People no longer have a sense of satisfaction once their goals have been achieved.
F. This quick way of gaining wealth and fame creates a celebrity culture among people.
G. The reason is that they don’t realize it takes talent and hard work to be rich and famous.

A
由第二段中的“By acting on these values…a positive role model. ”可知D项符合题意。
2.推理判断题。由题干中的关键词“having”values 定位到文章第三段“Your ‘having’ values are the feelings you need to create in order to be happy. These could be companionship, achievement, support, 'being' valued or financial security.” “having” values是指你为了感到幸福而所必需的一些感受,包括友谊、成就、他人的支持、被认同感以及经济上的安全感等。 只有C项没有涉及,故选C项。
3.推理判断题。由文章第四段中的“A calm person might go for a walk, meditate(沉思),or set a time limit before responding.”
B
答案:1.C; 2.C; 3.A; 4.C
由第二段第二句“In fact, he was not expected to live through the first winter.(实际上,没人想到他能活过第—个冬天)”可知,选C项。
2.由文中第二段后半部分“As a boy...He was nearly drowned nine times.”
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer 与The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn的时期,并不在晚年,故排除B项。 文章最后一句“He wore nothing but white from head to foot...”
C
答案:1.B; 2.B; 3.D; 4.A
从第一段第四句“Twain grew up there and was fascinated with life along the river...”
由第二段中“There’s also a fence painting contest to see who can paint the fastest."可推知能在最短的时间内漆完篱笆的人将获胜,故选D项。
4.推理判断题。至今仍伫立在马克 吐温孩童时期的家外的那片白色篱笆能够说明末段首句的结论:Although the story of Tom Sawyer is fiction, it’s based on facts.
D
答案:(1).B; (2).A; (3).D; (4).C
When they arrived at the house of a single mother with two children, the officers discovered the younger child, about two years old, was playing with the phone.
The mother mentioned that they weren't going to have a Christmas that year. It was pretty obvious that the family was struggling可知这个家庭的生活很困难。
The next day, they went to a supermarket and bought a tree, lights and some ornaments(装饰物) with their own money. Then they returned to the apartment to deliver some holiday cheer.
We appreciate it very much that people are talking about this after watching the news on TV because they need to see and need to be reminded that police officers are good guys 和They are human beings who have a kind heart and they do things that go unnoticed like this every day.
