Unit 1 Festivals Celebrations
A
When I was growing up, Mother's Day was as important as Christmas.
The energy around the house was always positive, mostly thanks to my father who made sure that his kids appreciated their mother. We would clean the house, and Mum got breakfast in bed in the morning and didn't have to lift a finger all day. And in the evening, we went to a restaurant for a traditional Mother's Day dinner.
What I learnt from my father over the years, was that no matter what, he always put my mother before himself. He absolutely loved her and never let her forget that.
I maintain(保持) my father's Mother's Day tradition with my wife. Growing up, I learned that showing affection to the woman you love or who gave birth to you is an important part of life. You see, it goes both ways, and the love you have for your mother comes back to you again and again.
Believing that and feeling it when you can may keep you from being lonely, even if your mum isn't close by or has passed away. There are a number of us who no longer have a mother in our lives, and truth be told, there are often times when I wish my mum were still here to comfort me. So instead, I remember the times she did just that. It makes me smile, and somehow, those memories of a more simple and loving life give me the comfort I'm looking for.
If you are mum-less, you too should find a deserving woman in your life and celebrate Mother's Day with her. If you don't know anyone, there are plenty of lonely mums in rest homes who would enjoy your company for a couple of hours. The visit will make both of your days, and perhaps your lives, a little bit better.
1.What did the author learn from his father
A.We should always put others before ourselves.
B.It's necessary to express love to those we love.
C.It's important to have an interesting family tradition.
D.Mother's Day is just as important as Christmas.
2.Why does the author value the idea of showing love for one's mother
A.It can set a good example for kids to follow.
B.It is what mothers expect their children to do.
C.It's important to follow your father's rules.
D.It can warm your mother's heart as well as yours.
3.What is the author's advice to someone whose mum has passed away
A.Visit lonely mums in rest homes on Mother's Day.
B.Try to get used to life without a mum.
C.Turn to other family members for love.
D.Give all your attention to your mother-in-law.

A record of 6.15 million trips was made by Chinese mainland tourists to overseas destinations during the seven-day Spring Festival holiday, which ended on Sunday, according to the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA). That is an increase of 7 percent compared with the last year's Spring Festival. About 374, 000 trips were organized by travel agencies, a 2.5 percent increase.
The CNTA also reported growth from individual and high-end(高端的) travelers and said that in addition to top and coastal cities, inland cities such as those in Guangxi— became important source markets. With many Chinese now traveling abroad during the Spring Festival, their choice of destinations has expanded along with their growing interest in foreign cultures and services.
"Chinese tourists are increasingly willing to experience local cultures and services, including staying in private homes, appreciating plants and watching monkeys," Li Xuejing, an agency's marketing manager, said.
Miss Guo, a Chinese tourist, who was vacationing on an island in Philippines, said, "I now pay more attention to relaxation and enjoyment during the holidays instead of shopping or choosing gifts for relatives."
Another choice is Britain. Though the devaluation(货币贬值) of the pound is a factor, Britain's rich history and famous education tradition have caught the eye of Chinese.
(1) How many trips were made to foreign countries during the seven-day Spring Festival holiday
A.6,150,000. B.2,500,000.
C.7,000,000. D.374,000.
(2) What can we learn about some inland cities in Guangxi
A.They're reported to have become important tourist attractions.
B.They're famous for all kinds of plants and monkeys.
C.They have many hot springs.
D.They have become important source markets.
(3) What will Miss Guo do on her vacation according to the text
A.Go shopping for gifts. B.Study foreign cultures.
C.Relax and enjoy herself. D.Chat with her relatives.
(4) Where does the text probably come from
A.A guide book. B.A newspaper.
C.A science magazine. D.An advertisement.
C
You are driving to school. You look up to see a pretty hot-air balloon. Whoa! You almost went through a stop sign! In a driverless car, you can look at the balloon. The car sees the stop sign without your help and stops the car. Car makers and others are already testing driverless cars or AVs (automated vehicles) in the U.S. and other countries.

Most cars already have some driverless technology like the anti-lock braking system (ABS). When a car is slipping on an icy road, the ABS can tap the brakes quickly. The wheels turn slowly but do not stop. The driver can then control the car safely. Many cars also have parallel parking technology. These cars can park themselves along a street. No driver is needed.
A driverless car can see the road better than people with the help of radar, cameras, and lasers. Radar helps the car see things up to 100 meters away even in darkness or rain. Cameras help the car see objects that are close. Lasers that work like radar, called lidar, spin on the roof and build a 3D model of the world around the car. Automated vehicles use GPS to find the best way from one place to another. All the information from the radar, cameras, lasers, and the GPS goes to the Controller Area Network bus, which lets all those devices talk to one another. The CAN bus uses the information to direct the car and to tell the car to go or stop.
Problems still exist with AVs. Hackers(黑客) may take over the car. There will probably be fewer jobs for people who drive taxis and trucks. A robo-taxi can find you and take you to your destination without a taxi driver. Automated trucks may roll along highways without a truck driver.
In the future, you can be the driver of your car, or you can look out of the window while the car drives you.
(1) Why is a pretty hot-air balloon mentioned in Paragraph 1
A.To tell that there are always interesting things to see while driving.
B.To show how interesting it is to drive to school.
C.To show the strength of driverless cars.
D.To tell the possible danger while driving.
(2) What kind of thing does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 belong to
A.Cars. B.Equipment.
C.Information. D.Automated vehicles.
(3) Which of the following ideas will the author agree on
A.There will be no human drivers in the future.
B.All the truck drivers will be out of work in the future.
C.All the driverless cars will be safe in the future.
D.Not all the Cars will be driven automatically in the future.
(4) Which of the following is the best title of the text
A.A driverless car B.A car with GPS
C.No driver in the future D.A flying car

Beijing— The public has responded with vigorous support for an NPC deputy's proposal to extend the Spring Festival holiday from three days to 10.
More than 78 percent of about 27, 600 respondents to a poll on www. . cn voted in favor of the idea of Li Jing, who is also the mayor of Meishan city in South-west China's Sichuan province. Li said the lunar new year festival holiday was too short for family reunions, especially for the nation’s 220 million migrant workers.
With hundreds of millions of people on the move during such a short time span, the holiday puts great stress on the public transport system and suppresses tourism, she added. She suggested the holiday be extended and cover the three adjacent(毗连的) weekends, which means the public could take a total of 16 days off and floating population could spend the Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the lunar new year, with their families.
People would then have sufficient time to fully enjoy the traditional holiday with their families, Li said during an interview with People's Daily Online on Friday.
Most online voters agreed that extending the holiday will ease the burden on public transport and strengthen family ties. "The Spring Festival is an occasion for family reunions and should be longer than the National Day holidayone responder said in an online post. “Every year,I wish I could spend more time at home for the Spring Festival, but I always have to go back to work. I hope the NPC will approve this proposal."
Another online comment read: "Extending the Spring Festival holiday could prevent the annual transportation crush, which has in recent years resembled an exodus(出走) of fleeing refugees(难民)".
Most of the about 13 percent who opposed the idea cited difficulties readjusting to work after the break. Some pointed out that office moral (士气) was generally low during the first week after the holiday. “After the six-day holiday, many people come back to work feeling absent-minded,” one respondent said. Some who opposed the extension suggested adding the Lantern Festival as an official holiday.
Another 10 percent said lawmakers should carefully study the impacts before they make any decisions on holidays.
1.Which of the following is NOT the reason why Li Jing suggested extending the Spring Festival holiday
A.The floating population could spend the Lantern Festival.
B.People could spend more money and this could promote consumption.
C.The lunar new year festival holiday was too short for family reunions.
D.The holiday puts great stress on the public transport system and suppresses tourism.
2.What was Li Jing's plan for the lunar new year festival holiday
A.It could cover the two adjacent weekends.
B.The holiday would be from the first day of the lunar year.
C.She added the Lantern Festival as an independent official holiday.

Tom has an aunt who lives in a far-off village. He hadn't seen her for two years and he really missed her.
Tom spent a lot of time with his aunt when he was a little boy. At that time, his parents were too busy with their work, so they sent him to his aunt. It was his aunt who took care of him for a long time. He remembered that back then a girl sometimes played with him. But he couldn't remember her clearly. After all, it had been so many years before.
Last week, Tom decided to visit his aunt. And he called her first.
"Hello, Auntie. This is Tom. How are you " asked Tom over the phone.
"I'm fine, Tom. Thanks. I'm just a bit lonely," said Tom's aunt. Hearing that, he knew he had made a right decision.
"I'm coming this weekend. I want to spend the weekend with you," he immediately said, thinking his aunt would be surely full of joy.
"Really That's great! I miss you so much." his aunt said excitedly.
Tom set off on Friday afternoon. He thought he would arrive by bus in the evening, but there was an accident on the road and all the traffic was stopped for almost an hour. When he got off the bus, it was getting dark.
It's a ten-minute walk from the bus station to his aunt's house. The village had experienced a lot of changes. Tom looked around curiously. Just at that moment, another bus stopped and a girl got off the bus. The girl passed by Tom and began to walk into the village. Thinking that his aunt was waiting for him, Tom began to walk into the village, too.
He walked behind the girl. After about two minutes, it seemed that the girl noticed him. She looked back hurriedly, and then continued to walk. Moments later, the girl looked back again and then quickened her pace.
