Beijing Daxing Airport Is Finally Open
Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX), also known as Beijing New Airport, is the biggest airport in the world. It is also the second international airport of Beijing along with Beijing Capital International Airport. The airport's design is a pioneering one while its location in Daxing District (the southern suburbs of Beijing) is perfect for serving the Chinese capital and the neighboring areas of Hebei and Tianjin. The new mega hub airport (大型枢纽机场) is expected to handle up to 45 million passengers per year by 2021 and 100 million in the future.
How big is Daxing Airport
The gigantic Daxing Airport, with the impressive shape which has given it the nickname "Starfish", has enormous dimensions. There are 4 runways at present (with the hope of becoming 7 in the future) and a vast terminal building (航站楼) covering a 700,000m2 area while the ground transportation centre extends to 80,000m2.
How many runways does Daxing Airport have
For the time being, Daxing Airport has four runways and 79 airport stands. The 4 runways' size is impressive while the airport stands are suitable for both one twin-aisle (双通道) and two single-aisle planes. Eventually, the airport will have 7 runways in total and will be able to serve about 620,000 flights every year.
Who designed Daxing Airport
Daxing Airport's terminal building is the impressive outcome of the cooperation between ADP Ingénierie (ADPI) and the architecture team of Zaha Hadid who tragically passed away in 2016. As a result, in August 2018, Hong Kong design studio Lead 8 undertook the design of the new commercial terminal which is expected to meet every passenger's needs.
How much did Daxing Airport cost
The construction of the mega airport, which is expected to eventually become the busiest airport in the world, cost an unsurprisingly large amount of money. The Chinese government is estimated to have paid about $17.47 billion for this great project.

It seems we can't get off the planet fast enough. Two thirds of NASA's money is spent on manned space exploration, and that number will grow with the USA's decision to send a man to Mars in 2037. We've seen all that is to see on Earth, right Wrong. The final place is here, under the surface of the sea.
Heading down into the ocean, human limits are quickly reached. At 200 metres, the water is as black as a moonless night. Most nuclear submarines would implode (内爆) before they reach I km down. At 3 km—still less than the average depth of the ocean— there's a good chance that you'll discover a new species. The deepest-diving whales go no further. At the very bottom, about 11 km down, lies the Challenger Deep, the deepest part of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean. Eighteen humans have walked on the Moon, but only three have seen the deep with their own eyes.
Yet things live down there. Big things. A very loud sound was once heard and scientists suggested that it was produced by an animal bigger than a blue whale, the largest creature known on the planet.
In the late 1990s, a deep-water submarine was dropped in the Southern Ocean, and passing 4,000 metres, it discovered something huge passing under it. Surprised Don't be. The ocean covers 70% of the planet's surface and we've studied less than 5% of it. We know more about the dark side of the Moon than about the bottom of the sea.
One reason why we explore space is to find evidence of other life forms. The search for life outside of Earth is important, but robots can look under the dry rocks of Mars better than humans. They're absolutely important for doing ocean research too, but they can't look under the sea. The cost of exploration is rising, but the results would benefit all our lives. Understanding the oceans will help us find new sources of food, drugs and energy.
Perhaps now it's time to begin a new period of sea exploration. Manned space exploration is science fiction. The adventure of the deep sea is science fact.
1. What do the examples in Paragraph 2 suggest
A. Sea exploration is no easy task.
B. Nuclear submarines need to be improved.
C. The ocean is far deeper than people expected.
D. The condition under the sea is similar to that on the Moon.
2. What do we know about the Challenger Deep
A. Blue whales live there.
B. No one has ever been there.
C. People are terrified by the sight of it.
D. It is the deepest known location of the Mariana Trench.
3. What does the author think of the discovery in the Southern Ocean
A. It's surprising. B. It's no wonder. C. It's worrying. D. It's no success.
4. What does the author want to tell us
A. Space exploration is of little value.
B. We spend too much money on space travel.
C. Humans' success lies in how much they explore the sea.
D. The ocean is the place where we should make our efforts.
C
It's already challenging enough for environmentalists to keep beaches clear of washed up trash and plastic debris(残骸), but the most difficult problem lies in cleaning up all of the millions of tiny microplastics that are impossible to pick up and separate from the sand.
Fortunately, a group of engineering students succeeded in developing a massive new vacuum(真空) cleaner that can collect microplastics without removing any of the sand from the beach. The 12 Canadian students from the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec built their Hoola One plastic vacuum cleaner as a class project.
"We did some research and we realized there was no machine around the world to do this kind of job," Hoola One co-founder Sam Duval told Hawaii Public Radio. "So we told each other, 'We will invent it,' and we did it."
As a means of testing their machine's efficiency, they recently used it on the sands of Hawaii's Kamilo Beach, which is also notorious for being one of the dirtiest beaches in the world. Though their first prototype(原型) experienced a number of technical issues, the students managed to fix the problems and tidy up the beach.
Using a handheld tube, the machine sucks(吸入) up plastic and sand and dumps them all into a massive tank of water. Since rocks and sand are heavier than plastic, they sink to the bottom of the tank so they can be dumped back onto the beach. The plastic, on the other hand, floats to the top of the tank.
According to Hawaii Public Radio, the team left the Hoola One vacuum on the island as a donation to the state department. They are now researching the ecological effects of the vacuum on the beach while they search for funding and sponsorships(赞助) to produce more Hoola One vacuums.
1.What is the hardest problem of keeping the beach clean
A.Picking up plastic debris. B.Removing trash on the sea.
C.Separating plastics from the sand. D.Clearing up all the microplastics.
2.What do we know about the Hoola One plastic vacuum cleaner
A.It can collect plastics removing sand from the beach.
B.It has been used widely on the beaches around the world.
C.The students tested its efficiency on Hawaii's Kamilo Beach.
D.The students gave up the first prototype due to several failures.
3.What is Paragraph 5 mainly about
A.The working procedure of the vacuum cleaner. B.The invention process of the vacuum cleaner.
C.The ecological impacts of the vacuum cleaner. D.The special materials of the vacuum cleaner.
4.What words can best describe the 12 Canadian students
A.Generous and stubborn. B.Confident and persistent.
C.Devoted and wealthy. D.Admirable and humorous.

Kazakhstan announced plans to bring wild tigers back to their historical range in the Ili-Balkhash region, and signed an agreement with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to conduct a tiger reintroduction program. "It will not only bring wild tigers back to their ancestral home, but also protect the unique ecosystem of the Ili-Balkhash region," said Askar Myrzakhmetov.
If the plans are successful, Kazakhstan will be the first country in the world to bring wild tigers back to an entire region where they have died out for nearly half a century. Tiger reintroduction projects can only be achieved within national borders and in areas that are considered current tiger habitats. Kazakhstan's tiger reintroduction program is unique and it desperately requires the restoration of a vast forest that is part of the wild tiger's historical range.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, wild tigers have lost over 90 per cent of their historical range. Wild tigers have completely disappeared from the region since the late 1940s, due to the loss of the habitat. To prepare for the return of wild tigers, Kazakhstan will set up a new nature reserve in the southwestern Ili-Balkhash, in order to restore(使恢复) the unique forest habitat. This will include the protection of existing wildlife, and reintroducing important prey(猎物), such as the endangered wild Bactrian deer.
Restoring tigers will also help protect Lake Balkhash. "The hard work remains ahead of us. We have to spare no effort to make this region ready for tigers and involve all stakeholders(利益相关者) to make this happen. That means dealing with illegal activities, having well-trained and equipped rangers, increasing prey populations and involving local communities," said Ekaterina Vorobyeva.
1. What is Askar Myrzakhmetov's attitude toward the tiger reintroduction program
A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Concerned. D. Disapproving.
2. What made the disappearance of wild tigers in the Ili-Balkhash region
A. The increasing loss of prey. B. The evolution of the species.
C. Lack of natural living places. D. Serious environmental pollution.
3. Which measure may be taken for the reintroduction of tigers
A. Controlling human activities. B. Limiting prey.
C. Building a reserve for tigers only. D. Training tigers to be more adaptable.
4. What is the best title of the passage
A. Efforts to restore forests in Kazakhstan
B. Bringing wild tigers back home in Kazakhstan
C. Attempts to handle illegal activities effectively
D. Preventing wild tigers disappearing in Kazakhstan

On a cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What's worse, he found that he only had one dime(十分钱) left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn't eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house.
Hesitantly he knocked at door, thinking about what to say when it opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. "What can I do for you " asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while "Would you please give me some...a drink of water " the boy dared not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you " "You don't owe me anything," she replied with a warm smile on her face. "My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness." Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point.
Years later the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give the effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she car me from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.

Luckily, after a long struggle, the battle was won, Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side.
Paragraph 2:
The bill was sent to her room. Hesitantly she took it. She was afraid to open it because she was sure that it would take the rest of her life to pay it off. Tears of joy flooded her eyes as she prayed silently, "Thank you, God."
