When I was in school, I participated in an internship (实习期) with a hospital chaplain (牧师). This largely included me visiting certain hospital patients and then discussing the communication with the chaplain.
I had no special training in this, and introducing myself to strangers was not my natural talent. On one visit, I cautiously entered a darkened room to find an elderly man lying lonely in the bed. He was awake, but very weak, confused and anxious. He badly wanted to communicate something, but I couldn’t understand what he was saying. He obviously didn’t want me to leave, but I felt so lost and uncomfortable that I had to leave the room after only several minutes.
The next time I was at the hospital, I was arranged to make follow-up visits with the same list of patients. I expected my time with the old man to be just as short as the last time. As I arrived at the room, the first thing I noticed was that the lights were on. His daughter was there visiting him. He was sitting in the bed and looked much better. I was certain the man didn’t remember me at all, but he recognized me immediately, saying, "I remember you. You were the angel that gave me hope in my darkest hour!" I was so amazed that I didn’t know how to respond.
I may never be able to explain it, but somehow he found in me something he needed at an important point in his life, just because I was there. I have thought about this encounter (相遇) often over the past 25 years. It has shaped the way I see life, the way I see myself, and the way I see others. Obviously, we can’t know the effect our actions, or even just our presence, will have on life.
1.Why did the writer leave the elderly man soon on the first visit
A.They had a short and boring conversation.
B.The elderly man wanted to stay by himself.
C.The writer was frightened by the elderly man.
D.The writer didn’t know what he could do to help.
2.What happened on the writer’s second visit to the elderly man
A.The elderly man’s condition turned much better.
B.The elderly man could hardly remember the writer.
C.The writer planned to communicate more deeply with the elderly man.
D.The writer wasn’t surprised at being called an angel by the elderly man.
3.The elderly man regarded the writer as his angel most probably because _______.
A.he was encouraged by the writer’s words
B.the writer’s second visit moved him deeply
C.he was impressed by the writer’s friendliness
D.the writer’s first visit gave him much strength
4.What is the best title for the passage
A.Getting a New Talent. B.An Angel by Accident.
C.Saving a Lonely Old Man. D.Communication Makes Life Better.

Dogs may help save the day in the Philippines, as they use their noses to smell out survivors buried by Friday's mudslide(泥石流). The team of dogs arrived in the Philippines from Spain, and this Tuesday they were just beginning their work. Search officials told CNN they hope the recent rain will wash away the smell of rescue teams so the dogs can do their job more accurately.
The dogs were brought in after sound equipment found sounds coming from deep inside the ruins, at a place where a school stood before the mudslide covered it. The sounds could mean people are still alive under all the mud or it could just be the earth resettling.
On Monday, rescue workers worked at the school site until three in the morning, trying to locate survivors, and they will begin digging again as soon as the dogs think they find someone.
Human teams from the US, Malaysia, and Australia are all trying to help, too. But so far they have yet to locate any survivors. Rescue workers told CNN that an earlier report that 50 survivors had been found was false.
How did all that mud bury the village in the first place On Friday, 2,400-foot Mt Kanabag turned into a mudslide after two weeks of constant rain weakened it. The mountain crumbled and the mud fell onto the village Guinsaugon, burying the 1,800 people who lived there. Out of the 300 houses in the village, only 3 were not covered by the mud. The village is on a southern Philippine Island called Levte. Rescue efforts have been difficult because the village takes six hours to reach from the nearest airport. Hopefully, the dogs can help their human friends find survivors.
1.According to the search officials' words in the first paragraph, we can learn that ________.
A.the smell of rescue teams can disturb the dogs
B.the dogs can follow the smell of rescue teams
C.the dogs can't smell the rescue teams
D.the dogs can tell the smells of buried people and rescue teams apart
2.The main purpose of this passage is probably ________.
A.to show the way to rescue the victims in the ruins
B.to introduce the instruments to save victims in a disaster
C.to tell readers that dogs can smell out victims buried in the ruins
D.to show how to train dogs to save victims in a mudslide
3.How many survivors have been found by the dogs
A.50. B.Only a few. C.1,800. D.None.
4.The reason why the rescue work wasn't going smoothly was probably that ________.
A.the rain was heavy B.so many people were buried
C.it was difficult to reach the village D.there is little chance to save the survivors
D
The scientific study of earthquakes is comparatively new. Until the 18th century, few factual descriptions of earthquakes were recorded, and the natural causes of earthquakes were not well understood.
The earliest earthquake for which we have descriptive information occurred in China in 1177 BC. The Chinese earthquake catalog (目录) describes several dozen large earthquakes in China during the next few thousand years. Earthquakes in Europe were mentioned as early as 580 BC, but the earliest for which we have some descriptive information occurred in the mid-16th century. The earliest known earthquakes in the Americas were in Mexico in the late 14th century and in Peru in 1471, but descriptions of the effects were not well recorded. By the 17th century, descriptions of the effects of earthquakes were being published around the world.
The most widely felt earthquakes in the recorded history of North America were a series that occurred in 1811-1812 near New Madrid, Missouri. A great earthquake, whose magnitude is reported to have been about 8, occurred on the morning of December 16, 1811. Another great earthquake occurred on January 23, 1812, and a third, the strongest yet, on February 7, 1812. Aftershocks (余震) were nearly continuous between these great earthquakes and continued for months afterwards. These earthquakes were felt by people as far away as Boston and Denver. Because the population in these regions was small, the destruction of human life and property was slight.
The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was one of the most destructive in the recorded history of North America——the earthquake and the fire that followed killed nearly 700 people and left the city in ruins.
1. When did published descriptions of the effects of earthquakes become popular in the world
A. In the 1300s.
B. In the 1400s.
C. In the 1500s.
D. In the 1600s.
2. What do we know about the earthquakes in 1811-1812 in North America
A. They killed a large number of people.
B. They occurred in San Francisco.
C. They could be felt very far away.
D. They almost destroyed entire cities.
3. What can we infer from the passage
A. Few earthquakes were scientifically studied before the 18th century.
B. Earthquakes can be avoided with the development of technology.
C. Most of the early earthquakes caused little damage.
D. People haven't found the causes of earthquakes so far.
4. What's the best title for this passage
A. The scientific study of earthquakes
B. Earthquakes in history
C. The effects of earthquakes on humans
D. Why earthquakes occur

Pictures of polar bears struggling to stay on the ice are often used by groups that want to protect these lovely animals and their natural habitats. ①________
Polar bears are highly specialised. This means that they have got used to living in a specific area and eating specific food. ②________ Their bodies are different from those of other types of bears. Polar bears have webbed(有蹼的) feet for swimming, thicker fur and more body fat for living and swimming in cold conditions, and light-coloured fur to help them mix with the environment. As a result, polar bears do not do well when they are in a non-arctic area. They cannot run as fast as other bears, they can become hot and tired easily, and they have a hard time hunting animals that are not in the snow.
③________ This means that they will eventually have to leave the Arctic and travel farther south. However, as they are so specialised, it is unlikely that polar bears will be able to live as they once did.
Other creatures, such as crocodiles or cockroaches, are not nearly as specialised. They live on almost every continent and in a wide variety of climates. ④________ When animals specialise, they often do better than less specialised species in the same place, but if the climate or other conditions change, the specialised animals are usually the first to die off.
If polar bears are going to survive the next 100 years, they will have to adapt. Most scientists believe that polar bears may eventually cross paths with brown bears and black bears. Whether these animals fight it out or fall in love to create new generations of hybrid bears remains to be seen. ⑤________
A. How specialisation hurts polar bears remains to be seen.
B. However, part of the solution lies with polar bears themselves.
C. Compared with other types of bears, polar bears are better at hunting animals.
D. Polar bears live above the Arctic Circle and eat fish and arctic mammals such as seals.
E. No matter how it happens, they believe that polar bears will live far into the future.
F. Unfortunately for polar bears, climate change is reducing the size of the areas where they can live.
G. In fact, crocodiles are one of the most adaptable animals on the earth and have survived for millions of years.

阅读下面短文, 根据所给情节进行续写, 使之构成一个完整的故事。
At the end of the class, Mr. Smith announced our assignment for the next Monday was to talk about someone we were grateful to instead of a book report. Upon hearing it, I couldn’t help complaining to Mareya that I was so nervous about having to talk in front of the whole class.
“You’ve been in at least three plays,” Mareya pointed out. “If you don’t get stage fright in front of those big audiences, why are you bothered by a few kids in our class ”
It was true, but in a play you were part of a group. I shook my head. Plus, there were so many people I was grateful to. There was no way I could possibly pick just one. Plus, even if I picked one I’d have no idea what to say. Plus, even if I figured out what to say, I was a million-percent positive I’d mess up if I tried to say it out loud! I’d be standing there with everyone staring at me, waiting for words to come out of my mouth. “Oh, my goodness!” I pulled my sweatshirt hood (兜帽) over my face, put my hands over my ears and said, “I don’t want to talk about it!”
But one thing about really good friends who knew you really well was that they didn’t always do exactly what you asked them to. Mareya could be pretty pushy talking of being helpful. She scribbled (潦草地写) something on a piece of paper, lifted my hood, and smiled. She’d drawn a funny elephant with the word BREATHE coming out of its trunk.
“This is Franky, the Everything’s-Going-to-Be-All-Right elephant.” Mareya giggled. She held the picture up to her ear and asked, “What’s that you say, Franky You think my friend Arizona should come over to my house this weekend so we can work on our talks together ”

答案:
Paragraph 1:
And that was exactly what happened. Mareya and I sat at the desk at the study in her house on Saturday afternoon. I asked her curiously who she would pick to talk about. “My grandma.” She blurted out. She told me she was grateful to her grandma, who took great pains to bring her up despite her poor health. From her excited look and gentle tone, I could feel her deep gratitude and love for her grandma. I was so immersed in her talk that I didn’t notice she had finished it until she patted my shoulder. She then suggested I talk about my mum. I followed her advice as I had no other good ideas. She also helped me organize my ideas and gave me patient guidance on my gestures, emotions and eye contact when practising the presentation in her presence. She was so helpful that I got prepared for my talk very smoothly.
Paragraph 2:
On Monday morning, however, I decided to talk about Mareya. Though it was true that there were many people I was grateful to, I thought it was Mareya that I should express my gratitude to here and now. When my turn came, I mustered up courage and stepped onto the platform. I couldn’t help looking at Mareya and found her smiling and cheering for me. Clearing my throat, I started, “Today, I’d like to talk about Mareya, a friend I will always be grateful to.” Hearing my words, Mareya widened her eyes and looked at me in surprise. Then I recalled good times spent with Mareya and how she managed to help me out whenever I was in trouble. Upon finishing the talk, I trotted towards Mareya and gave her a bear hug. Meanwhile, thunderous applause broke out in the classroom.
