My first term at MIT (麻省理工学院) was awesome I got all A's, and I declared maths as my major. My parents were expecting me to become a doctor like them so I was trying to satisfy them. But I was desperately running away from them. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. My third term, I ended up with a D in maths. I didn't do that well in my other classes, either. It seemed like all my friends were doing so well, getting opportunities over the summers.
My fifth term, I realised that I was awful at higher level maths. I had lost all confidence in myself. I went to a few classes at the beginning of the term, but after midterm, I had totally stopped. My only relief was the dance team I was in. I would sleep all day, and then go to dance practice, and then go back to sleep. As expected, I failed in all of my classes and had to withdraw from MIT.
I had no choice but to tell my parents. Instead of yelling at or hitting me, though, they just held me and cried. The next day, my dad took a day off from work and took me to a nearby, small college.
I had lost all confidence in myself. Before my first biology test, I didn't think I could pass. I did pass. Since I had so much free time, I decided to join a biology lab. I realised that was what I wanted to do! I wanted to be a scientist!
This past May, I graduated with the highest honours, and now I have my PhD in biology. Though it ended up taking me 5 years to graduate from college, I can say now that dropping out of MIT was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I've realised that a person is not their grades. I've realised how much my parents loved me. I've finally discovered my passion (激情) in life!

Modern buildings are set up on a large scale in cities. Should they be allowed to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city In order to answer this question, we must first examine why people want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons for example, economic reasons why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed
In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my hometown where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old ones too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative (保守的) and do not like change.
Although we have to respect people's feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move_things_forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be a more risky choice.
8.What is the author's view of historical buildings in Paragraph 1
A.Some of them are unattractive.
B.Many of them are too old to preserve.
C.They don't offer the historic feel of an area.
D.They are more pleasing than modern buildings.
9.Which of the following does the author mostly agree with
A.We should reproduce the same old buildings.
B.Buildings shouldn't fit in with their surroundings.
C.Some old buildings have reduced the interest of the area they are in.
D.No one knows why people are against new buildings.
10.The underlined words “move things forward” mean ________.
A.destroy old buildings
B.put things in a different place
C.respect people's feelings
D.choose new architectural styles
11.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To explain why people dislike change.
B.To warn that we could end up living in caves.
C.To answer the questions people show great interest in.
D.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.

分析句子可知,此处是固定搭配would like to do sth.
6.have read
此处为固定句型“It seems that……”
