Guy Bryant never intended to be a father figure. But over the past 12 years, he’s housed more than 50 foster kids in his Brooklyn apartment.
For decades, Bryant, 61, worked with teens aging out of New York’s child welfare system. His job was to find services that would make the transition (过渡) to living on their own easier. But he felt that what he could accomplish at the New York City Administration for Children’s Services office wasn’t enough. So in 2007, he decided to become a foster parent.
In an interview last month, Bryant told Romario Vassell, 21, one of his foster children, that agreeing to care for him was definitely one of the best decisions he made in foster care. Bryant told Vassell that he was nervous when he took in his first foster child. He said, “I lived alone at that point, and he was a kid that nobody wanted to take because of his behaviors. He got in a fight and he appeared at my house.” Bryant said his family thought he was out of his mind for making such a big lifestyle change and wondered how Bryant would adjust.
Bryant had been Vassell’s assigned case worker when they met. Bryart suggested that Vassell, then an untidy 18-year-old, consider foster care as an option to get out of the home lead shelter where he was staying.
At first, Vassell was hesitant. “I didn’t know how foster care was.” he said.
Since living with Bryant, Vassell now feels like he has a support network. “If I feel down and like I’m cornered, I have someone I can reach out to and talk to.” he said. “And that’s what I really love.”
Bryant told Vassell, “Whatever you’ve learned from me, I want you to teach it to someone else. Because that’s what’s important to me.”
24.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.The shift of teens’ life.
B.An introduction of Bryant’s task.
C.Bryant’s challenge as a foster parent.
D.The reason for Bryant’s being a foster parent.

26.What can we know about Vassell from the text
A.He is now living alone.
B.He was Bryant’s first foster kid.
C.He refused Bryant’s offer at first.
D.He was instructed to pay kindness forward.
27.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To call for social care. B.To praise Bryant’s deeds.
C.To tell the story of Vassell. D.To comment on Bryant’s life.

When I stepped into the Samcheong Park Library in Seoul, I saw the future. The simple building had a nice selection of books and a cafe where readers could enjoy coffee while gazing at the leaves outside. It was specifically designed without any latest technology.
“What’s so innovative about that ” a librarian in Toronto asked when I showed her pictures. Innovation to her meant digital technology, like 3D printers. “Why couldn’t they both be innovative ” I asked.
We are constantly told that innovation is the most important force in our economy, without which we would be left behind. But that fear of missing out has led us to fall into the false trappings of innovation over truly innovative ideas that may be simpler and more effective. This mindset implies that if you just buy the new thing, you have innovated! Each year, businesses and individuals run around like broken toy robots, trying to figure out their strategy for the latest buzzword equipment.
At best, this is a waste of resources. Devices are bought, used and abandoned, as the technology’s capabilities fall short of its promise. But at its worst, this approach can truly cause damage. Schools cut field trips to purchase tablets with few proven panies that applied A.I. into hiring have actually strengthened gender and racial prejudices.
True innovation isn’t just some magic devices. It is a continuing process of reflection and reassessment, which often means adopting “old” ideas and tools in a new context, or even returning to methods that worked in the past. Adjusted properly, these rearview (后视的) innovations have proved as transformative as novel technologies.
Look no farther than the streets of New York, which have been redesigned recently to accommodate cyclists with car-free zones. The idea isn’t new. It was created half a century ago, with the aim of bringing cities back to their residents. And while e-reader sales have been exploding, Penguin just announced it would publish tiny printed books, an ideal solution for a market demanding both convenience and physicality.
28.Why is a librarian mentioned
A.To set an example. B.To cite an authority.
C.To make a prediction. D.To present an argument.
29.What does the underlined “buzzword” mean in Para.3
A.Fashionable. B.Affordable. C.Practical. D.Imaginative.
30.What does the writer agree with about innovation
A.Wasted resources lead to innovation.
B.Magic devices encourage innovation.
C.Innovation should be human-centered.
D.The power of technology is undervalued.
31.What is probably the best title of the text
A.Innovation Is Not That Expensive
B.Future Lies in Returning to the Past
C.Some Best Ideas Are in the Rearview Mirror
D.Innovation: the Most Important Force in Economy

When Swiss watch boss, Christoph Grainger-Herr, was unable to fly to a global trade show because of Covid-19 restrictions, he decided to join the show as a life-size, 3D hologram(全息投影). Appearing in 4K resolution, he was able to talk to, and see and hear the people who were physically attending the event.
With the coronavirus pandemic having put a stop to much global travel since March 2020,there is a growing interest in the use of holograms—3D light projections(投影) of a person—as amore life-like, more immersive, more sensory alternative to video calls.
Los Angeles-based Portl is one of the firms at the forefront of the technology. Its portals(投影设备) are eight feet (2.5m) tall, glass-fronted, computerised boxes. Inside the booths a life-size hologram of a person appears. The portals have built-in speakers, so that the hologram’s “voice” can be heard. They also include cameras and microphones so that the user of the hologram can see and hear the people in front of his, or her projection. “And were it not for the sheet of glass in front of the hologram, you’d think the person was actually there. In fact, if there is no light on the glass so that you cannot see it reflecting, then you do think the person is actually there.” says Mr Nussbaum, the boss of US holograms firm Portl.
The portals cost about $60,000 each, so they are certainly expensive, although the company says they can be rented for considerably less. “In a few years’ time, this is going to become a regular way of communicating between offices,” says Mr Nussbaum.
Yet, he cautions that problems may occur in the future if these holographic images become so real that distinguishing them from an actual person will become impossible. “If you can create digital experiences that get closer and closer to how you sense reality, you’re more likely to be manipulated(操控),” says Mr Nussbaum.
Mr Nussbaum says he is confident that hologram technology is going to replace standard video screens in video conferencing in five years. He also predicts that it will see off video information screens. “This will be the new way that businesses will want to present their content whether live or recorded.”
32.What is the function of the first paragraph
A.To give an example. B.To present an argument.
C.To lead to the main topic. D.To attract readers’ attention.
33.What can we learn about the portals
A.They are life-size glass boxes.
B.They have a built-in computer.
C.They reduce light reflection on the glass.
D.They consist of audio and video equipment.
34.What can we expect of the hologram technology in the future
A.It will record live conference automatically.
B.It is helpful in telling an actual person from a digital one.
C.It will possibly take the place of conventional screens.
D.It is not likely to popularise due to high cost of the portals.
35.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To explain the function of hologram technology.
B.To compare video calls with hologram technology.
C.To introduce hologram technology as a communication means.
D.To show the importance of hologram technology in communication.

He woke suddenly and completely. It was 4 a. m. at Christmas, the hour when his father had always called him to get up and help with milking the cow. Strange how the habit of his youth was with him still, even his father had been dead for 40 years. The magic of Christmas for him was a long childhood past, and he was wondering why he felt so awake when his mind went back to his teenage years.
He was 15 years old then and still on his father’s farm. A few days before Christmas, he heard what his father was saying to his mother.
“Mary, I hate to call Rob in the mornings. He’s growing so fast, and he needs his sleep. I could manage alone.”
“Well, you can’t, Adam.” His mother replied. “Besides, he isn’t a child anymore. It’s time to take his turn.”
When he heard these words, something in him woke: his father loved him so much as had never been thought before. Now that he knew so, there would be no more lying in the mornings waiting to be called. He got up and pulled on his clothes.
On the night before Christmas, he lay thinking about the next day. They were poor, and most of the excitement was in the turkey raised themselves and the mince pies made by his mother. His sisters made presents, and he always saved and bought something for parents.
However, he wished, that Christmas he was fifteen, and that he had a better present for his father than before. He looked out of the window and saw Dad working in a stable. Then a thought struck him: why should he not give his father a special gift out there in the stable He could get up earlier, quietly go into it and get all the milking done. Then when his father went in to start the milking, he’d see it all done.

Dear David,
By means of this letter, I’d like to tell you a recent vaccination arrangement of our school.
According to announcement released by school commission, there will be a COVID-19 vaccination lasting from 1st to 5th of May at school’s clinic, from whose website you can browse relevant information. Once you’ve made up your mind to get vaccinated, these following tips should be borne in your mind: check up if you’re allergic to the vaccine; stay at the site for 30 minutes after getting the shot and alcohol should be excluded from your diet since then.
I strongly suggest you seek vaccination, which not only protects you, but those around you.
Yours,
Li Hua
Possible versions two:
Dear David,
I’m writing to inform you of the COVID-19 vaccination arrangement of our school.
The vaccination is totally optional, and it will last from next Monday to Friday at school clinic. But before getting vaccinated, you have to figure out whether you’re allergic to the vaccine. If not, then check with the provider to make sure you bring any needed documents. After getting the injection, it’s recommended to remain at the site for 30 minutes to make sure you do not have a concerning reaction.
I strongly advise you to seek vaccination. This not only protects you, but those around you.
Sincerely,
Li Hua
读后续写
He must have woken twenty times in the night, looking at his watch for a proper time to start. It was at a quarter to three when he got up and went out, careful of an occasional sound. The cows in the stable looked at him, sleepy and surprised. It was early for them, too, but they accepted him calmly for milking. He had never milked before, but it seemed easy for him, with the cows behaving well. Eventually the task, a special gift for father, went more easily than supposed, and with two full milk cans, he left the stable silently and went back to his bedroom.
He went back in his bedroom with only one minute to jump into bed before hearing his father get up. He covered his head to silence his breath of excitement. His father came in, “Rob! We have to get up and get everything started.” “All right…” he replied sleepily. Yet he lay still, his dancing heart beating violently out from his body when the door opened again. His father came in with a crying laugh, pulling away his cover, “you thought you’d fool me, did you ” “It’s for Christmas, Dad!” He happily replied. Dark as it was outside, he could feel two great arms around him, a hug to recognize his growth.

Text 10
Huacachina is a remote village in the country of Peru. After flying into the capital of Lima, you need to take a bus to Ica. If you like visiting ancient temples, you can go to Comatrana instead. It is nearer to Huacachina than Ica. (17) Keep in mind that taxis here will charge you more money, because they are the only way into Huacachina. Fortunately, it is only a 20-minute ride. Once you get to Huacachina, you will realize it is completely surrounded by desert as far as the eyes can see. (18) In the middle of the small village is a small natural lake. Villagers say the lake looks like a mirror, (19) and that the blue sky above looks like an upside-down ocean. The mud from its green waters is said to have deep curing qualities. For entertainment you can bathe in the lake, drive sand-vehicles, or explore the village, which takes less than 10 minutes to walk across. (20) If you want a peaceful vacation in a unique place, Huacachina is the hidden treasure you are looking for.
