Keeping fit often means sharing a busy pathway with cyclists, runners and walkers, but imagine facing the task of doing it all without being able to see or hear. It is a challenge many disabled athletes face, unless someone agrees to be their eyes and ears.
Newly formed group Achilles Brisbane pairs vision-and hearing-impaired(视觉和听觉受损的)athletes with people who would like to guide them.
Jane Britt, president of Achilles Brisbane, who is vision-and hearing-impaired, said, “When we go out, it’s much less frightening to have someone beside us that has full hearing to listen for us and tell us what’s there.”
Ms. Cullen and Ms. Britt meet up most Saturday mornings to take part in the five-kilometer park run. Their partnership is built on trust, but Ms. Britt said that it took time to develop.
Ms. Britt said it took an unexpected storm for her to trust Ms. Cullen completely. “There was violent rain, my glasses were broken and we were walking together. I suddenly had to tell her I couldn’t see anything, and I was going to have to completely trust her. From that time I knew it was going to work because she was so good about dealing with the special situation we both found ourselves in,” she said.
Isabella Allen and her seeing eye dog Tatum are two new additions to the Achilles Brisbane. Ms. Allen kept active by rowing, running and cycling but found it difficult to keep going as her vision (eyesight) became worse. After nearly giving up completely, she worked up the courage to ask Achilles Brisbane to find someone to share a boat with her.
Ms Allen said the fear of not finding anyone to row with almost stopped her from reaching out to Achilles Brisbane. “But, they found people and matched me to them,” she said. “It’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”
What does Paragraph 1 try to show
The danger of walking on a busy road. B. The difficulty the disabled athletes face.
C. The exercise people do to keep fit. D. The necessity of building roads for the blind.
25. How does Jane Britt feel about going out alone
A. Relaxed. B. Excited. C. Worried. D. Bored.
26. What happened in the heavy rain according to Ms. Britt
A. She developed a strong sense of teamwork. B. She led Ms. Cullen forward on the road.
C. She began to depend on Ms. Cullen as her guide. D. She fell down on the ground.
27. What was the best thing Ms. Allen has done
A. Asking Achilles Brisbane for help. B. Working in Achilles Brisbane.
C. Exercising non-stop. D. Meeting Tatum.
C
While elephants born without tusks(长牙) are not unheard of, they normally form just 2 to 6 percent of
the population. However, that is not the case at Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park, where an astonishing
33 % of female elephants born after the country’s conflict ended in 1992 are tuskless. While that may
appear to be just a coincidence(巧合), le, an elephant behavior expert, has another theory. The
researcher thinks we may be witnessing unnatural evolution(进化) of the species due to the constant hunting of
elephants for valuable ivories.
Poole says before the country’s 15-year-old conflict, the park was home to over 4,000 elephants. However, by the time the conflict ended in 1992, about 90 % of them had been killed for ivories to get money. Of the less than 200 survivors, over 50 % of adult females had no tusks. Therefore, it is not surprising that the park’s tuskless elephant population has grown greatly.
This is not the first time researchers have observed a great change in the population of elephants. At Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park and Lupande Game Management Area, areas which were heavily hunted in the 1970s and 1980s, 35% of elephants of 25 years old or older and 13% of those younger than 25 are now without tusks. A 2008 study published in the African Journal of Ecology found that the number of tuskless females at the Ruaha National Park in Tanzania went from 10.5 % in 1969 to about 40 % in 1989, largely due to illegal(非法的) hunting for ivories.
The recent ban(禁止) on ivories in both the US and China should help get rid of , or at least reduce , elephant hunting. However, scientists are not sure how long it will take for elephants with a higher rate of tuskless females to change the trend.
What is the probable cause of the phenomenon mentioned in Paragraph 1
Illegal hunting. B. Constant farming.
C. A pure coincidence. D. Natural evolution.
29. Why did people kill so many elephants during the conflict in Mozambique
A. To get money by selling ivories. B. To develop new decorations.
C. To provide food for local people. D. To make ivory products.
30. Which of the following had the earliest record on tuskless elephants
A. Gorongosa National Park. B. South Luangwa National Park.
C. Ruaha National Park. D. Lupande Game Management Area.
31. What does the underlined phrase “the trend” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Elephants facing greater danger. B. Elephants growing more slowly.
C. Fewer female elephants staying alive. D. More female elephants being tuskless.
D
A study has shown how ecotourism(生态旅游) in the Philippines has changed people’s attitudes towards marine conservation(海洋保护).
Researchers from the University of Victoria and other institutes in Philippines, visited three sites where tourists pay to swim with whale sharks in the wild. They interviewed a range of locals in Oslob, Donsol and Pintuyan, including fishers and ex-whale shark hunters. At Oslob, the largest of the three sites, people were more likely to speak about the resulting improvements to their quality of life and an increase in job opportunities. At the smaller, less profitable(利润的) sites, responses(回答) were more likely to be about the changes in how people behaved towards the sharks.
Dr. Jackie Ziegler, leader of the team of researchers, said, “ Many of the people we spoke to reported they now care about and value whale sharks because of tourism activities. They also expressed the community’s emotional connection to the species and the strong need to protect them. Before the introduction of tourist activities, most of the locals admitted to harming the sharks by hitting them with stones or riding them.” In terms of attitude towards the wider marine environment, the majority(大多数) of respondents now actively encourage others to care for the ocean and they also use more sustainable(可持续的) fishing practice.
The study also acknowledged(承认) the potential(潜在的) negative effects of tourism on the marine environment, such as impacts (influences) on the health of local coral reefs(珊瑚礁) and of the sharks. It concluded that further studies were needed to assess(评估) these impacts before firm conclusion(结论) could be drawn regarding(about) the positive impact of whale sharks tourism on ocean conservation.
Nevertheless, the researchers say their work suggests ecotourism can be an effective means of strengthening protection. “Bringing in the views of the local tour operation to the study was necessary in uncovering the true impact of whale shark tourism and the wider benefit to the ocean conservation in the Philippines,” Dr Ziegler added.
What were the local people concerned least according to Paragraph 2
Improvement of life. B. Behaviours towards sharks.
C. Increase of work chances. D. Relationships between people.
33. Which word can best describe locals’ action towards marine life before ecotourism
A. Protective. B. Satisfying. C. Unsustainable. D. Beneficial.
34. What will be the focus of the future research on tourism
A. Influences on other marine species. B. Strategies(策略) for carrying out marine ecotourism.
C. Types of ocean conservation. D. Importance of protecting the local whale sharks.
35. What may be the best title of the text
A. Ecotourism Changes Locals’ Attitudes to Marine Conservation.
B. Ecotourism Does Much Good to Marine Life as Before.
C. Marine ecotourism Gives Rise to a New Kind of Business.
D. Ecotourism Has Brought Large Benefits to People.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How is eating in space different from eating on Earth
If you send astronauts into space, you have to send along food as well. But what do astronauts eat, and how do they eat it Scientists take several factors into consideration as they plan meals for space.
First, and possibly most important, is nutrition (营养). 36 Providing junk food to eat, such as potato chips, sodas, and pizza, would make the astronauts unhealthy.
37 If the food that has been provided is distasteful, then the astronauts may avoid eating it. If you’ve ever tried to concentrate on something important while your stomach doesn’t feel well, you’ll know why the scientists in charge of a space mission(task) want their astronauts to eat regularly.
The lack (缺少) of gravity (pull) in a spacecraft also determines what foods can or cannot be eaten in space. Meals must be packaged carefully so they won’t spill(洒落/溢出) into the cabin (one of the areas inside a spacecraft). Water or tiny bits of food could get inside a machine or electronic device and damage it. 38 A loose knife bouncing (弹起) around inside the cabin would be dangerous.
39 The weight of every object included in a spacecraft must be calculated (计算) in order to ensure that there is enough fuel and power to carry the craft safely into space and back home again. 40 Most foods are stored in plastic bags, and often, the foods are dehydrated (使脱水). When an astronaut is ready to eat, hot water is added to the meal and warm it up.
Despite all these requirements, much of the food eaten in space is actually similar to what you might eat on any given day.
Taste is also important.
Finally, weight is an important concern.
Food packaging is made to be as light as possible.
Believe it or not, they also have fresh fruits and vegetables.
Nutrition and practicality(实用) are important things to consider.
For the same reason sharp knives and folks are never used on board.
Keeping astronauts’ physical health is a top task for any space mission.
