In the United States, college students often share a room with one roommate, and dormitories often have separate floors for men and women. A classic dormitory will likely be decorated by the students with posters. US dormitories are renowned for being untidy, but some universities hire cleaners to help students keep them clean.
Dormitories in South Korea often have stricter rules on students than those in other countries. And, in some dormitories, students must go to bed by midnight. Almost all dormitories are single-sex, and visiting between sexes is not allowed. Some dormitories include single rooms, but most house about ten students in a room.
Student dormitories in Japan are also like those found in the West, but they sometimes have larger rooms that are shared by more people. Dormitories in crowded cities are usually smaller than those in the country. Facilities such as showers are often shared by a large number of students, but the dormitories are generally well-equipped with Internet access and televisions. Many dormitories provide a canteen. Foreign students studying in Japan can also choose to live with a local family, although this can make it harder to make friends at the university,
Students in the UK have a similar system as the US, except that it is rare for students to share a room. Dormitories are known as “Halls of Residence”. Four or five students of ten have their own room in a flat or a house, and share a bathroom and kitchen. Students will pay the university to live in the dormitory, but the price is usually cheaper than living in private accommodation.
1. What’s the best title of the text?
A. Introduction to Dormitories Abroad B. Do as Romans Do When in Rome

2. The underlined word “renowned” can be replaced by “____.”

3. If you want to live a strict dormitory life, studying in ____ is a better choice.
A. the US B. South Korea C. Japan D. the UK
4. You can cook for yourself in dormitories of ____.
A. the US B. Japan C. the UK D. South Korea

November is a tough month—not only for single people, but also for many students who will take their mid-term exams. It’s an especially intense time for freshmen because they will take their very first exams at university. They may be worried, but here, their upperclassmen offer advice on studying and preparing for exams.
“Mathematics gives me a headache”
Ask university students what is the most difficult course, and most of them will give you the same answer: advanced mathematics. This is also true for Dai Shuang, an 18-year-old student studying geodesy and geometrics (测地测绘学) at Wuhan University. “Advanced mathematics pushes mathematics to a whole new level,” he says. “It’s so difficult that I get a headache whenever I think about the exam.”
Solution: following the course is important
Qin Xia, 22, is a finance major at Renmin University of China. In Qin’s opinion, course hours should be valued because it’s difficult to study this course alone. “If students think the class is too difficult or boring they can take notes to stop themselves from getting distracted,” he says. Another part of studying is doing a lot of exercises. “Doing exercises helps in consolidating the knowledge taught in classes and preparing for the exam.” Qin says.
“Learning languages is all about memorizing”
Zhu Tianjiao, 18, is a Japanese major at Shanghai International Studies University. Since the very beginning of campus life, she has felt under pressure. “All of my classmates are straight-A students, which means I have to spare no effort in studying to keep up with them.” she says. Zhu will have her first university exam in two weeks, and she’s very nervous because she doesn’t know how to improve her language proficiency other than by memorizing words and phrases.
Solution: it is a matter of accumulation
Xia Bingcong was in the same position three years ago. The 22-year-old English major at Tsinghua University. According to Xia, memorizing, listening and reading are all equally important in language learning. “After my first failure, I started watching American programs and TV series. I also read English newspapers every day. In one year’s time, I found that my English improved a lot, which made taking exams easy.” she says.
5. Qin Xia attached the importance to ____.
A. studying alone B. taking notes C. doing exercises D. the course
6. What confused Zhu Tianjiao a lot?
A. How to deal with nerve. B. How to improve the ability of language.
C. How to communicate with others in Japanese.
D. How to memorize words and phrases.
7. Xia Bingcong is a ____ at Tsinghua University.
A. freshman B. sophomore C. junior D. senior

Some of the United States’ biggest banks have closed their doors to students at community colleges, non-profit universities and other less competitive schools, even as they continue to extend government-backed loan to students at the nation’s top universities.
Citibank has been among the most active in rebuilding the list of colleges it serves. JPMorgan Chase, PNC and SunTrust say they have not dropped whole loan plans, but are cutting colleges. Some less-selective four-year colleges, like Eastern Oregon University and William Jessup University, say they have been dropped by some lenders.
The practice suggests that if the credit crisis and poor conditions in the student loan business continue, some of the nation’s neediest students will be hurt most. The difficulty of borrowing money may keep them from attending school or force them to take a semester off. For those who have got student loans, they will end up with less attractive terms and may run a greater risk of dropping out if they have to change lenders in the middle of their college year.
Tuition and loan amounts can be quite small at community colleges. But these institutions, which are a stepping stone to other educational programs or to better jobs, often draw students from the lower ranks of the economic classes. According to the most recent data, about a third of US graduates took out loans, a majority of them guaranteed by the government.
“If put too many obstacles in their way to get a loan, they’ll take a third job or use a credit card,” said Jacqueline K. Bradley, assistant director for financial aid at Mendocino College. “That almost guarantees that they won’t be as successful in their college career.”
Some loan companies have stopped the student loan business entirely, viewing it as unprofitable in the current environment. Students attending first-class, expensive, public and private four-year universities can expect to remain plentiful. The banks generally say these loans are bigger, more profitable, and less risky, perhaps in part because the banks expect graduates from these universities to earn more.
So far, financial aid administrators say they have been able to find some lenders that students can switch to, but this is costly to students—in money and time.
8. Who will be the most upset at the news?
A. A poor student at a top university. B. A poor student at a community university.
C. A bank clerk dealing with student loan business.
D. A teacher from a non-profit university.
9. With too many obstacles in their way to get a loan, students will probably ____.
A. switch to top universities B. cancel their credit cards
C. fail in their exams D. win a scholarship
10. When they say something is “government-backed”, they mean it is ____.

W: Come back before 11 o’clock tomorrow morning. I need your help with something in the kitchen.
M: OK.
5. W: Hey, Billy! Do you think we should start the job search early?

W: That wasn’t so bad, was it?
M: In the middle of winter?! You try walking with ice in the most uncomfortable places!
听第7段材料,回答第8、9题。
M: Hello, Linda, this is Peter.
W: Hi, Peter. What can I do for you?
M: I need directions on how to get to the football stadium.
W: Oh, it’s very simple. First, go south on Highway 25 for 6 miles until you come to a large restaurant called Fanny’s. Turn left at the restaurant and continue for a few miles more and you will come right to the stadium. There are plenty of signs once you pass the restaurant and they will take you right to the stadium.
M: Do you think the stadium will be very crowded?

M: I see. Do you get along well with her?
W: Yes. She always cooks dinner for me.
M: Well, what kind of food does she make for you?
W: Sometimes, she makes noodles and sandwiches. Last night she made pancakes. They tasted delicious.
听第9段材料,回答第13至16题。
W: The paper says the temperature in Florida will be around 20 °C for the next week or so.
M: But I enjoy this cold weather here. What’s wrong with a few days of low temperatures?
W: I like the fall here. The brilliant colors of the maple leaves. Fall is always beautiful in this part of the country. But the winter...
M: I know what you’ll say, but the snow is beautiful. Just look at that carpet of white out there. It’s a winter wonderland.
W: It’s freezing! The temperature hasn’t been above minus 5 degrees and it’s going to drop to below minus 10 again tonight. We have to shovel the snow off the steps every other day. That’s not beautiful.
M: I don’t mind the extra work. I like the fresh air and the winter sports. You know I love skiing and ice-skating.
W: I know, but I still wish spring were here. I look forward to the soft rains and the flowers. Winter seems so long here. But down in Florida the sky would be clear and there is no snow and no...
M: Yes. I know what you mean. Let’s get out our bathing suits and go south.
听第10段材料,回答第17至20题。
I’ve been sharing flats for the past four years. I had to admit my first experience was a disaster. My first roommate seemed really nice, but I changed my mind about her a few days after I moved in. One day I came home and threw my books and jacket onto the sofa. She shouted at me, “I hope you’re not going to leave those there!” It was then that I realized we could never get along, as I’m definitely not the world’s tidiest person. So I moved out soon.
Then I shared a big house with three other foreign girls. It was great because the house was always full of young people and we had lots of parties. But it was almost impossible to do any work because the house was so noisy. The biggest argument we had was always on the day when the electricity bill arrived!
After a year the foreign girls went home, and I decided to share a flat with a good friend. We’ve been getting on really well. It’s great to have someone else pay the rent and share dinner with you when you’re too exhausted to cook. And best of all, when you have a bad day you know there’s always someone to talk to.

Dear friends,
Today we are having a farewell party to honor our friend Peter. He is going back to his homeland before the New Year. In the past year Peter and all of us have been on good terms. Also we have helped each other and become good friends. Thank you, Peter, for being a part of this class! We have a better atmosphere of English learning so we have become more interested in English and have made great progress. We really appreciate your help and friendship. Dear Peter, we will miss you and we all hope that we can keep in touch. We expect you to come back some day. Good luck, Peter.
May you have a pleasant journey home!
