One of the latest trends(趋势) in American childcare is Chinese au pairs. Au Pair in Stamford, Conn, for example, has got increasing numbers of request for Chinese au pairs from zero to around 4,000 since 2004. And that's true all across the country.
"I thought it would be useful for him to learn Chinese at an early age," Joseph Stocke, the managing director of a company, says of his 2-year-old son. "I would at least like to give him the chance to use the language in the future." After only six months of being cared by a 25-year-old woman from China, the boy can already understand basic Chinese daily expressions, his dad says.
Li Drake, a Chinese native raising two children in Minnesota with an American husband, had another reason for looking for an au pair from China: She didn't want her children to miss out on their roots. "Because I am Chinese, my husband and I wanted the children to keep exposed to(接触) the language and culture(文化)," she says.
"Staying with a native speaker is better for children than simply sitting in a classroom," says Suzanne Flynn, a professor in language education of children. But parents must understand that just one year with an au pair is unlikely to produce plete mastery demands continued learning until the age of 10 or 12."
The popularity of au pairs from China has been strengthened by the increasing numbers of American parents who want their children to learn Chinese. It is expected that American demand for au pairs will continue to rise in the next few years.

I recently booked tickets to take my children, aged seven and nine, to see The Railway Children at the theatre. Thinking they may get more out of it if they already knew the story, I ordered the book to read to them. I'm slightly ashamed(羞愧的) to say we only managed to read a few parts of the book. While everyone loved the film and the play was excellent, as far as a reading experience goes, for me at least, it was quite hard to stand.
It wasn't because the language was difficult, but because the writer seemed to use 10 sentences when one would probably work. But, as a book-lover, hoping that my children would read widely, I thought, "Is it important that they read the classics(经典著作) "
My friend Pandora thinks children's classics are just for school. She said, i4Unless they had great adventure, then they won't keep the parent or the kid gripped while reading together.
Another friend of mine Clare believes it is important that her children read the classics and revisit them again when they are older.
Camilla, my sister-in-law, makes a very good point that books like The Railway Children , were written in a different period of time with a different lifestyle in mind. She said, think the issue is that books are written for people who have less time now, while the classics were people's entertainment so the writing had to be long and drawn out.
Nowadays, children may feel that when they read a book from the past, they have to struggle through a lot of difficult writings only to find that not much happens. If that's the case, they might enjoy the books more in simplified versions(简化版) or by having the books read to them as a bedtime story.
"Some people seem to refuse books in simplified versions, but I don't think there's anything wrong with reading a classic novel in a simplified version first, and then later in life moving to the full version, Camilla said. It sounds like excellent advice.
1.What does the underlined word "gripped" in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Attracted.
B.Disappointed.
C.Touched.
D.Frightened.
2.What does Camilla think about books like The Railway Children
A.They don't really have much value.
B.They shouldn't be considered as classics.
C.They're no longer suitable for today's kids.
D.They're really good to entertain today's people.
3.Which of the following would the author most probably agree with
A.Today's children shouldn't read classics.
B.Classics are usually famous for their stories.
C.Today's kids can read simplified versions of classics.
D.Today s kids don't have to read a classic again and again.
4.What would be the best title of the text
A.Should Today's Kids Read Classics
B.Do Today's Kids Like Reading Classics
C.What Should Today's Kids Read in Their Spare Time
D.What Kind Of Books Should Parents Buy for Their Kids

A study of English learning problems was carried out among a total of 106 international students. It shows that most students considered understanding spoken English to be their biggest problem on arrival. This was followed by speaking. Writing increased as a problem as students discovered difficulties in writing papers that they were now expected to hand in. Reading remained as a significant(显著的) problem.
The information gained helped us in determining where special attention should be paid in our course. Although many students have chosen to join the course with a reasonable motivation (动机), we considered it important to note what seemed to encourage interest. Nearly all the students have experienced some kind of grammar-based English teaching in their own country. To use the same method would be self-defeating because it might reduce motivation, especially if it has failed in the past. Therefore a different method may help because it is different.
Variety of activity was also seen as a way of maintaining(保持) or increasing motivation. Several years ago we had one timetable that operated throughout, but we soon found that both the students and the teachers lost interest by about halfway through the ten weeks. This led us to a major re-think, so finally we brought it into line with the expressed language needs of the students.
1.What is the text mainly about
A.Foreign students have more problems.
B.There are many ways to improve English.
C.Teaching should meet students' needs.
D.English learning problems should be studied again.
2.Writing became a bigger problem when international students _________.
A.had to write their papers
B.became better at speaking
C.became less interested in reading
D.had fewer problems with listening
3.We may infer from the last two paragraphs that ________.
A.different teaching methods should be used
B.grammar-based teaching seems to be encouraging
C.English courses are necessary for international students
D.teaching content should be changed halfway
4.The word "it" underlined in the last paragraph refers to "_______".
A.re-think
B.activity
C.motivation
D.timetable
D
Doing crosswords(纵横字迷) is a fun way to kill the time and can also be educational. Difficult crosswords may leave you confused as you have no ideas on how to solve them sometimes. To perform well in this game, you need to have enough knowledge of different fields. If you are unable to do them and you have access to the answers, it is not generally considered cheating(作弊) to look up an answer or two. However, in some cases, it does not follow the rule.
A crossword should not include someone else's answers, so even a quick look at a fellow student to complete a crossword would not be fair. Generally, you wouldn't have access to the answers.
Additionally, some crossword competitions should not be connected with cheating. Again, in such a situation, you usually won't have access to the answers. Turning to the Internet or referring to(査阅) any books of crosswords for answers is also unfair since some people will complete the crosswords strictly with their own knowledge.
If you are not in a competitive environment, the check of a word can actually be an opportunity to learn how to become better at crosswords. Through looking up the answers (Although sometimes considered as cheat), you can memorize whatever facts or word definitions you must look up. This will help you avoid the need to cheat in the future.
Some argue that cheating on crosswords is always wrong, and you're only cheating yourself if you are looking up the answers. lt could be argued instead that cheating on crosswords that are done for fun or enjoyment can actually be an opportunity to benefit yourself because you're learning something new. Just don't forget to mention that you actually did cheat a little. Being honest is of great importance both to you and the other competitors.
It can be helpful to buy books of crosswords that have several different difficulty levels. If you are new to doing crosswords, you might want to put off working on crosswords until you are more confident in your skills.
1.According to the passage, doing crosswords ______.
A.makes people more likely to cheat
B.is the best way to learn something new
C.improves peopled confidence in themselves
D.requires enough knowledge of different aspects
2.What does the writer want to tell us in Paragraph 4
A.Everyone can become good at crosswords.
B.We shouldn't cheat on crossword competitions.
C.It is important to get much knowledge of crosswords.
D.Cheating on crosswords can become a learning experience sometimes.
3.The proper attitude towards your "cheating" on crosswords for fun is ________.
A.admitting your cheating honestly
B.choosing the suitable competitors to cheat
C.making up a kind excuse for your cheating
D.trying to avoid letting other competitors know the unfair behavior
4.What does the passage mainly talk about
A.The reasons why some people cheat on crosswords.
B.The best ways to become good at doing crosswords.
C.Whether it is necessary to look up answers for crosswords.
D.It's not always considered cheating to look up answers for crosswords.

With two bags of cat food in her arms,Manuela Wroblewski couldn't stop smiling as she walked toward the familiar shop on the comer. She was making her weekly visit to see Hussein the barber. He spotted her through the picture window of his quiet shop and burst through the door and into the sunlight.
The two hurried over to the tiny food dishes lined up in the alley Soon the sound of cat food clinked(叮当)against the bowls and several stiff tailed cats began to appear.
Here in Avsallar,Turkey, there was a cultural aversion(厌恶)to cats and dogs, those who fed theanimals were often scorned(轻蔑).But Hussein paid no mind to those who glared at him.He took his timein the alley, kneeling for the longest while, stroking each cat and speaking softly.Hussein was simply a man who loved with his whole heart, and in this moment,he was lost in the comfort of his family.
As the two finished up and made their way back inside the shop,Hussein's smile faded and Manuela couldn't help but notice that he was beginning to look rather thin.Manuela,a native of Germany, has led a volunteer animal recuse program in Turkey for the last three years, but the language came slowly.Only by chance, when a multilingual(懂多国语)acquaintance arrived, did the room begin to darken as Hussein explained that he was about to lose his barber shop.
After decades in the same tiny room, Hussein had been told that he must leave. His little barber shopsimply didn't pay enough rent and with so few customers calling for his"old-fashioned"services,the landlord had invited in another tenant(租客)... one who wouldn't be feeding animals outside.
Manuela's eyes began to flood as Hussein expressed his worry for the cats he cared for. There were only seven days before Hussein would move out and Manuela feared for this very survival and for that of the animals who depended on him.

A
答案:1.D; 2.D; 3.A
Because I am Chinese, my husband and I wanted the children to keep exposed to the language and culture.
Complete mastery demands continued learning until the age of 10 or 12."
The popularity of au pairs from China has been strengthened by the increasing numbers of American parents who want their children to learn Chinese.
B
答案:1.A; 2.C; 3.C; 4.A
解析:
Unless they had great adventure"可知, 这里是指如果书里面没有冒险描写的话,很难一直"吸引"读者读下去。
I think the issue is that books are written for people who have less time now, while the classics were people's entertainment, so the writing had to be long and drawn out."
I don't think there's anything wrong with reading a classic novel in a simplified version first"以及"It sounds like excellent advice."
C
答案:1.C; 2.A; 3.A; 4.D
解析:
This led us to a major re-think, so finally we brought it into line with the expressed language needs of the students."
Writing increased as a problem as students discovered difficulties in writing papers that they were now expected to hand in." 故选A。
Therefore a different method may help because it is different."
D
答案:1.D; 2.D; 3.A; 4.D
To perform well in this game, you need to have enough knowledge of different fields."
Just don't forget to mention that you actually did cheat a little.Being honest is of great importance both to you and the other competitors."

She decided to do something for Hussein through the Internet. She set up a donation page on a fundraising website, where the story of Hussein and his stray cats was shared. To draw more attention of the netizens, Manuela snapped up pictures of Hussein feeding those strays with great affection. And that was what posted on the Internet: an old man, with a weather-beaten face and a pack of cats with striking faces and piercing green eyes. Sure enough, as netizens read Manuela's post about the barber's fate, there was a swell of support. One after another, readers began making small donations to help and Manuela couldn't wait to share the news with Hussein.
There still remained one problem: where to reopen the barber shop. But as fate would have it, there was something incredible in store for them. In an old building adjacent to Hussein's shop, a landlord happened to read the post, who also had a soft spot for cats. He contacted Hussein in no time and offered to rent a storefront for nothing. In less than one week, the barber was back in business again, his whole world restored through the kindness of strangers. And best of all, the survival of the four-legged was secured.
