Aerial performer Jennifer Bricker was born without legs, but she never let it stop her.
Wrapped in a loop of red silk hung from the ceiling Jennifer Bricker climbs and twists to the music. Her head hangs down and her strong arms let go as she balances on her back, high above the ground a move that's all the more daring because she has no legs.
Jennifer was a few months old when she was adopted by Sharon and Gerald Bricker. She had big brown eyes, a bright smile, and huge amounts of energy. When a doctor advised her adoptive parents to carry her around in a kind of bucket, they refused.
Jennifer soon learned to walk — and run — on her hands and bottom, and grew up fearlessly climbing trees and bouncing on the trampoline(蹦床) with her three older brothers. "My parents didn't treat me differently so I didn't grasp the concept that I was different. I knew I didn't have legs but that wasn't stopping me from doing the things I wanted to do."
At the age of three she was fitted with artificial legs, but she never really took to them — she moved more freely without.
In 1996 the Olympic Games took place in Atlanta. Jennifer loved to watch the women's gymnastics team, and especially adored the 14-year-old Dominique Moceanu who competed for the US. When Moceanu and the women's team won gold, Jennifer decided she was going to be a gymnast, too. She took up power tumbling, which involves performing floor exercises down a runway. But Jennifer did not want any allowances to be made for her disability.
At the age of 10 she took part in the Junior Olympics and by age 11 she was tumbling champion for the state of Illinois.
Jennifer now travels the world as an inspirational speaker and acts as an aerial performer.

We all know that exercise is good for your health. But some kinds of sports may be better than others.
Running, for example, may help to protect against heart disease and other health problems. Running may also help you live longer. Researchers say it is not important how far you run. It also does not matter how fast or even how often you run. As an advertisement for Nike says, "JUST DO IT."
Recently researchers studied more than 55,000 adults. About one-fourth of the adults reported running regularly. The study found these runners were less likely to die of any form of disease than non-runners, including heart disease. In fact, the runners lived,on average, three years longer than the non-runners.
This study lasted 15 years. During that time, more than 3 ,400 of the individuals died. About 1 ,200 of the deaths were linked to heart disease or strokes.
One of the researchers is a man named D. C. Lee,a professor of Iowa State University. He said, "Compared to non-runners, runners showed 30 percent lower risk of death by any causes, including heart attacks, strokes and cancer. Also, runners compared to non-runners showed 45 percent lower risk of death by cardiovascular disease(心血管疾病),including heart attacks."
D. C. Lee and the other researchers found that speed, distance and how often one runs made little difference in reducing the risk of death. The runners in the study ran between 10 and 16 kilometers per hour. Mr Lee said slower runners and those who only ran once or twice a week were helped nearly as much as those who ran faster and further. And also we looked at the running over time and we found that persistent runners (over six years) showed the biggest benefits, as well."
1.What does the author mean by referring to Nike's ad "JUST DO IT."
A.It's time for you to stop running. B.Nike has always kept its promise.
C.You have to run as fast as possible. D.Running does you good whatever its form.
2.The researchers got the results of their study mainly by _________.
A.analyzing data B.having interviews
C.performing experiments D.doing field surveys
3.What can we learn from Paragraph 5
A.Heart disease is the biggest killer of mankind.
B.Runners can gradually get rid of any diseases.
C.Heart disease has killed more people than cancer.
D.Runners are less likely die from cardiovascular disease.
4.What can we know according to Mr Lee
A.Slower runners and faster runners benefit almost equally from running.
B.You can benefit most if your speed is over 10 km per hour.
C.You must control your speed properly while running.
D.The further you run, the more benefits you will get.
D
The extreme need for blood donors(捐赠者) may soon be eased as two teams of researchers take one step closer to being able to produce artificial blood in the lab, creating a limitless supply of blood. The two studies, both published in the journal, are the result of nearly 20 years of research and experiments. Having a limitless blood supply could greatly help patients suffering from different blood disorders that require regular transfusions.
"People have been trying to do this for 20 years unsuccessfully," said Cambridge University's Dr. Caroline Guibentif." This is the first time... they have got cells that can be self-renewed and give rise to all sorts of blood cells, so of course it's a big step towards the goal, but we are not quite there yet."
In the first study, the researchers were able to turn stem cells (干细胞) into blood stem cells that have the ability to produce different types of human blood. On the other hand, the second team of researchers successfully turned adult cells from mice and turned them into blood stem cells. The result of the first study could greatly help patients with genetic blood disorders. Doctors could soon take cells from the patients, genetically correct its defect and make functional blood cells. Scientists could also take cells from universal donors to develop a limitless supply of blood stem cells and blood. Meanwhile, the success of the second study is to be achieved in clinical trials, and it could provide a way to treat different immune disorders.
Due to the relatively short lifespan of mouse models, the researchers did not detect any disadvantageous side effects of the artificial blood nor find any traces of cancer. The next step now is to try both methods in clinical trials. Despite the great success of the two studies, experts noted that it could possibly take years before the dream of having the limitless blood supply comes true.
1.What can we know about artificial blood
A.It can be used in medical treatment. B.It will be sold at a low price.
C.It is easy to produce artificial blood. D.It can cure blood disorders.
2.What does the underlined word "defect" mean in Paragraph 3
A.Origin. B.Effect. C.Advantage. D.Fault.
3.What will the researchers do next with artificial blood produced
A.They will make such blood on a large scale. B.They will carry on with clinical trials next.
C.They will use it to save so many patients. D.They will make a study of immune disorders.
4.Which of the following is the suitable title for the passage
A.Genetic Blood Disorders
B.Worries About the Limited Blood
C.Scientists Help Produce Limitless Artificial Blood
D.Scientists Encourage People to Donate More Blood

"Acknowledged, Detective. This is my..."
He hung up and told the driverless UNATS Robotics car to get him down to the railway station as fast as it could, angry with himself and with Ada—whose middle name was Trouble, after all—for making him deal with a robot before he'd had his breakfast. The name had been his ex-wife's idea ,something she'd insisted on.
He hadn't thought his ex-wife in years. Well, months. Weeks, certainly. She'd been a brilliant computer scientist at the UNATS Robotics school at the University of Toronto. Now she was settled in her own research lab in Beijing, providing the kinds of software solutions for robot applications.
He itched to wiretap her, to read her email or listen in on her phone conversations. He could have done that when they were still together, but he never had. If he had, he would have found out what she was planning.
He could have talked her out of it.
"And then what, Artie " said the nagging voice in his head. He couldn't stop her from chasing her own dream—making the smartest robot in the world, especially with their little daughter in her belly.
"Shut up!" he told the nagging voice.

第二节
答案: In a few minutes, he was at the front gate of the railway station. Ada opened the door for him. He stepped out of the UNATS Robotics car hurriedly to catch the bullet train for Beijing, where his ex-wife, a top computer scientist lived. During the journey, he constantly considered how to persuade his ex-wife to quit her research, which could get her into trouble. Clearly, it was not an easy task. She had chased her dream for ages. The train pulled in at the railway station. He began to look for his ex-wife, who had promised to pick him up.
There she was, standing by a teenage girl who had the same blue eyes as his. Artie walked up to them slowly. With so many words to say, he felt a knot in his throat. At last, he looked into their daughter's eyes and said, "Hi, my lovely girl!" His voice was trembling slightly. "Daddy! Mommy has told me everything. You don't need to worry about us anymore. Yesterday, she worked out the smartest robot software successfully." Artie turned to his ex-wife in disbelief. She nodded, "I could never achieve my dream without your support." Artie hugged them both, thinking to himself, "Never stop a person who is chasing dreams!"
