Today is Father’s birthday. I went to buy a gift to make his day. The subway train taking me home was crowded, but I was lucky to get a seat. I sat there quietly imagining Father’s smiling, satisfied and happy face at receiving the gift. The train stopped at the next stop and an old lady with two large suitcases got on. Seeing her so tired, I offered my seat to her, although I felt exhausted myself. The old lady thanked me and I smiled back at her.
Maybe that was another gift for Father. I also realized how much sweeter the journey would be if you make it smoother for others!天津市新华中学2022届高三第 5次统练试卷

Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson in the back of a New York City taxi cab. Here’s what happened. I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car’s back end by just inches!
The driver of the other car, who almost caused a big accident, started yelling bad words at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was friendly. So, I said, "Why did you just do that This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!" And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call "The Law of the Garbage Truck."
Many people are like garbage (rubbish) trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it. And if you let them, they’ll dump it on you. When someone wants to dump on you, don’t take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You’ll be happy you did.
I started thinking, how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me And how often do I take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets It was that day that I said, “I’m not going to do so anymore.”
Good leaders know they have to be ready for their next meeting. Good parents know that they have to welcome their children home from school with hugs and kisses. Leaders and parents know that they have to be fully present, and at their best for the people they care about. The bottom line is that successful people do not let Garbage Trucks take over their day. What about you What would happen in your life, starting today, if you let more garbage trucks pass you by Here’s my bet. You’ll be happier. Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. So, love the people who treat you right. Forget about the ones who don’t.

With eco-tourism on the rise, eco-hotels are fast becoming the darling of the travel industry. These days, however, staying at an eco-hotel doesn’t necessarily mean vacationing in a tree house in the Costa Rican jungle, although that is certainly a choice.
The majority of eco-hotels fall into one of several categories: hotels and resorts that conserve ecologically important habitats; “green” hotels that reduce, recycle, minimize waste, and protect water; sustainable hotels that harvest food from gardens on the hotel property or get part or all of their power from renewable energy; hotels that encourage community involvement such as guests taking part in trail clearing; and hotels that offer some form of environmental education to their guests.
As such, eco-hotels are a various group. Stylish urban hotels like the Willard Inter-Continental Washington focus on energy conservation whereas the Rosario Resort & Spa on Orcas Island in Washington State offers a wildly popular “green” vacation package where guests can “take a hike, clear a trail”.
No matter what you call them, eco-hotel, eco-lodge, eco-resort, or green hotel, they’re all part of the “greening” of the tourism industry.
Part of what drives this greening of the hotel industry is no doubt competition. Going green is yet another way to distinguish a hotel from the mass of other excellent hotels that consumers have to choose from. But for many hotels, it’s also part of their philosophy. With the concept of “going green” firmly rooted in consumers’ minds, eco-hotels have taken it to the next level, and whether or not money is the driving factor behind the greening of the hotel industry doesn’t matter so much as it’s good for the planet.

A. protects important habitats
B. harvests food from its own garden.
C. has courses on the environment for its guests
D. encourages its guests to participate in its greening activities
49. From the last paragraph, we can learn that _______.
A. money is part of the driving force behind eco-hotels
B. eco-hotels have no advantages in competing for guests
C. eco-hotels teach their guests the philosophy of eco-hotels
D. the hotel industry cares more about money than the environment
50. People who choose to stay at eco-hotels _______.

D
History is full of cases where dreams have been a pathway to creativity and discovery. A striking example is provided by Dr. Otto Loewi,a pharmacologist and winner of a Nobel Prize. Loewi had spent years studying the chemical transmission of nerve impulses (脉搏). A great breakthrough in his research came when he dreamed of an experiment three nights in a row. The first two nights he woke up and wrote down the experiment quickly and untidily on paper. But the next morning, he couldn’t tell what the notes meant. On the third night, he got up after having the dream. This time, instead of making notes he went straight to his laboratory and performed the important experiment. Loewi later said that if the experiment had occurred to him while awake he would have rejected it.
Loewi’s experiment gives some insight into using dreams to produce creative solutions. Nervous feelings are reduced while you are dreaming, which may be especially useful in solving problems that require a fresh point of view.
Being able to take advantage of dreams for solving is improved if you “set” yourself before retiring. Before you go to bed, try to think intently about a problem you wish to solve. Bury yourself in the problem by stating it clearly and reviewing all relevant information. Then use the suggestions listed in the previous section to catch your dreams. Although this method is not guaranteed to produce a novel solution or a new insight, it is certain to be an adventure. About half of a group of college students using the method for a week recalled a dream that helped them solve a personal problem.
51. The main idea of this passage is that _________.
A. very little is really known about the meaning of dreams
B. it is possible to “catch” one’s dreams by planning before going to sleep
C. dreams can be useful in producing creative solutions to one’s problems
D. Loewi’s experiment helped in the study of transmission of nerve impulses
52. The first paragraph is mainly organized by _________.
A. classifying types of experiments
B. summarizing the work of one researcher
C. comparing and exploring historical cases
D. telling in time order about one man’s research
53. If Loewi had thought of the experiment while awake, he would have _________.
A. taken it seriously B. thought it was a ridiculous idea
C. tested it D. doubted it
54. The author probably thinks that _________.
A. dreaming is a better way than taking notes in scientific research
B. if we want to be creative, we must make use of our dreams
C. nervous feelings may stop someone thinking of useful ideas
D. dreaming is surely a good way to produce a new solution.
55. The underlined word “retiring” in the third paragraph most probably means ______.
A. going to sleep B. giving up your job C. having a break D. thinking of a solution

A year ago August, Dave Fuss lost his job driving a truck for a small company in west Michigan. His wife, Gerrie, was still working in the local school cafeteria, but work for Dave was scarce, and the price of everything was rising. The Fusses were at risk of joining the millions of Americans who had lost their homes in recent years. Then Dave and Gerrie received a timely gift—$7000, a legacy (遗产) from their neighbors Ish and Arlene Hatch, who died in an accident. “It really made a difference when we were going under financially.” says Dave.
But the Fusses weren’t the only folks in Alto and the neighboring town of Lowell to receive unexpected legacy from the Hatches. Dozens of other families were touched by the Hatches’ generosity. In some cases, it was a few thousand dollars; in other, it was more than $100,000.
It surprised nearly everyone that the Hatches had so much money, more than $3 million—they were an elderly couple who lived in an old house on what was left of the family farm.
Children of the Great Depression, Ish and Arlene were known for their habit of saving. They thrived on (喜欢) comparison shopping and would routinely go from store to store, checking prices before making a new purchase.
Through the years, the Hatches paid for local children to attend summer camp when their parents couldn’t afford it. “Ish and Arlene never asked if you needed anything,” says their friend Sand Van Weelden, “They could see things they could do to make you happier, and they would do them.
Even more extraordinary was that the Hatches had their farmland distributed. It was the Hatches’ wish that their legacy—a legacy of kindness as much as one of dollars and cents —should enrich the whole community and last for generations to come. Neighbors helping neighbors—that was Ish and Arlene Hatch’s story .
