Most people have heard of Shakespeare and probably know something of the plays that he wrote. However, not everybody knows much about the life of this remarkable man, except perhaps that he was born in the market town of Stratford-upon-Avon and that he married a woman called Anne Hathaway. We know nothing of his school life.We do not know, for example, how long it lasted, but we presume that he attended the local grammar school, where the principal subject taught was Latin.
Nothing certain is known for what he did between the time he left school and his departure for London.According to a local legend, he was beaten and even put in prison for stealing rabbits and deer from the estate of a neighboring landowner,Sir Thomas Lucy.It is said that because of this he was forced to run away from his native place.A different legend says that he was apprenticed to a Stratford butcher, but did not like the life and for this reason decided to leave Stratford.
Whatever caused him to leave the town of his birth, the world can be grateful that he did so.What is certain is that he set his foot on the road to fame when he arrived in London. It is said that at first he had no money or friends there, but that he earned a little by taking care of the horses of the gentlemen who attended the plays at the theatre.In_time,as he became a familiar figure to the actors in the theatre, they stopped and spoke to him. They found his conversation so brilliant that finally he was invited to join their company.
1.In the early life of Shakespeare,he________.
A.attended a public school
B.lived in London
C.studied Latin
D.was put in prison for stealing cattle
2. Why was he forced to leave his native place according to this passage?

Intense(剧烈的) physical exercise is not the only way to better health.Studies show that walking several times a week can lower the risk of many diseases. They include heart disease, stroke, diabetes, bone loss, arthritis (关节炎), and depression.Walking also can help you lose weight.
Fast walking is good for the heart. It lowers the blood pressure. It raises the amount of good cholesterol (胆固醇)in the blood.Researchers say walking can sharply reduce the risk of suffering a heart attack.
Studies have also shown that walking for 30 minutes a day can delay and possibly prevent the development of diabetes.People who are overweight have an especially high risk to develop this disease.
Walking strengthens the muscles and builds up the bones that they are attached to.Studies show that walking could decrease the risk of developing osteoporosis (骨质疏松症).Walking can also help ease the pain of arthritis in areas where bones are joined. This is because walking strengthens the muscles around the bones.
Experts say walking is one of the safest ways to exercise. There is a low risk of injuries. So it is good for people who are starting an exercise program for the first time and for old people.
A walking program is easy to start. You should wear loose clothes and good shoes. There are shoes that are designed especially for lots of walking.
How fast should you walk? For the best effect, doctors say you should walk fast enough to cause you to breathe hard.Yet you should still be able to talk.Let your arms move freely while you walk.
There are no rules of starting a walking program. You might walk short distances.Or you might walk up hills to strengthen your leg muscles.Health experts say you can gain the most from a walking program if you walk at about five kilometers an hour for 30 minutes a day.You should do this about five times a week.

For any Englishman, there can never be any discussion as to who is the world’s greatest poet and greatest dramatist.Only one name can possibly suggest itself to him:that is William Shakespeare.Every Englishman has some knowledge, however slight, of the work of our greatest writer. All of us use words, phrases and quotations from Shakespeare’s writings that have become part of the common property of English-speaking people. Most of the time we are probably unaware of the source of the words we use, rather like the old lady who was taken to see a performance of HAMLET and complained that“it was full of well-known proverbs and quotations”.
Shakespeare, perhaps more than any other writer, made full use of the great resources of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal employment of English; Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand. There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare used it.Such a study is well worth the effort(it is not,of course, recommended to beginners)even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare’s day.

A.more or less about Shakespeare
B.Shakespeare, but only slightly

Ⅴ.阅读理解
7 years ago my daughter and I stopped other things so we could have enough time to look after my husband Gary, who was partially disabled and at home most of the time.We had been looking for a medium-sized dog to accompany him. What we ended up coming home with was a 120-pound German Shepherd mix that was quickly named Duke. The only things we knew about him were that he was found sitting on the shelter steps on a very cold November morning, that he was 2 to 4 years old and that he loved belly rubs.
The minute he came into our home he was Gary’s dog, following him constantly, sleeping by his bed and generally being a protective soul and best friend.Duke obediently (顺从地) came from the bedroom every morning, except for one.On that particular morning he refused to come out.He whined (悲泣) and sat there by the bed with his ears down and nothing I could say would make him come out. When I went into the room to get him I discovered my husband had collapsed (昏倒) on the other side of the bed. When I could not get him to respond I rushed him to the hospital. He had pneumonia (肺炎) and his liver was shutting down.According to the emergency doctor he would not have survived the day if I had left for work as usual.
Duke is our hero, a guardian angel in a fur coat.We rescued him after he had been abandoned, we saved him when his body threatened to let him down and he repaid us by saving my husband’s life.He is the king in our household and he deserves the best we can give him.Several years later Duke became seriously ill.Although his medicines would be a strain (负担) on our tight budget, there was no other choice—he was a member of the family.

We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming (把……按能力分班)pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade! Besides,it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect for their total personality.
We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning.
In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups. This gives them the opportunity to learn to cooperate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.
Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work,it does not matter what age the child is.We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least ,and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.

Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life.To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?
In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes. While people traditionally prioritize caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-absorbed and self-concerned.
Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. They say that it is a jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy.Obviously greedy and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences.
In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts.
Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish.Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship.
In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pres-sure.However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship with others.

“S.H.E.is going to sing at the CCTV annual Spring Festival Evening Party, is that true?” cried out Peng Weiye, a Senior 2 girl in Shanghai and die-hard (铁杆的) S.H.E.fan.
After checking it on the Internet, Peng quickly phoned friends to spread the news. For fans like her,S.H.E.’s performance is perhaps the only part of the old fashioned evening to get excited about.
The Taiwanese band is made up of Selina, Hebe and Ella.Their name comes from the first letter of each of the singers’ English names.
Last week S.H.E.announced they would perform in Las Vegas, US, over Christmas and then in Guangzhou on January 15.
At their Shanghai show on October 30, hundreds of parents waited outside the Hongkou Stadium.Inside, thousands of teenagers sang, cried and shouted as the band performed.
“I love their music, healthy image and everything re-lated to them.Thank God that, although my parents don’t understand why I love them so much, they still bought me a ticket for that show,” said Peng about the Shanghai performance.
It is not just on the mainland that the three girls have thrilled (make sb.excited) audiences. In the past year the band has passed through Taiwan, Hong Kong and even Singapore and Malaysia.
When the three high school girls entered a singing contest in Taiwan in 2000, none of them ever dreamed of being a superstar.“We had never met before, and we didn’t talk at all at the beginning,” recalled Ella.
When asked about the secret of their success, she said, “Our average looks and not-so-expensive clothes keep us close to our fans.We are happy to be the girl next door, your singing sisters.”
“It’s really a magical journey, from day—dreaming high school girls to singers performing on the same stage as our idols.Nothing but magical,”she said.

The next time you go into a bank, a store, or a supermarket, stop and listen. What do you hear? Music is playing in the background. It’s similar to the music you listen to, but it’s not exactly the same. That’s because this music was specially designed to relax you, or to give you extra energy.Sometimes you don’t even realize the music is playing, but you react to the music anyway.
Quiet background music used to be called “elevator music” because we often heard it in elevators. But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has a new name “Muzak(轻松舒缓的背景音乐)”.A company in Seattle makes Muzak for 150,000 places in 14 different countries.About one-third of the people in America listen to “Muzak” every day.The music plays for 15 minutes at a time, with short pauses in between. It is always morning, and between three and four in the afternoon. When people are more tired, the music gives them extra energy.
If you listen to “Muzak” carefully, you will probably tell the names of many of the songs. Some musicians or song writers don’t want their songs to be used as “Muzak”, but others are happy when their songs are chosen. Why? They get as much as $ 4 million a year if their songs are used!
Music is often played in public places because it is designed to make people feel less lonely when they are in an airport or a hotel. It has been proved that “Muzak” does what it is designed to do.Tired office workers suddenly have more energy when they hear the pleasant sounds of “Muzak” in the background.Factory workers produce 13 percent more, and supermarket shoppers buy 38 percent more groceries when they hear “Muzak”.
1.About “Muzak”, which of the following is NOT true?
A.“Muzak” was once called “elevator music”.
B.A lot of Americans enjoy listening to “Muzak” every day.
C.People can hear “Muzak” in a bank, a store or a football field.
D.“Muzak” will let people feel relaxed.
2.What is “Muzak” designed to do?
A.To relax people who feel tired and give people more energy.
B.To make people buy more.

3.Some musicians or song writers are happy when their songs to be chosen as “Muzak” because________.

4.Which kind of music is more likely to be designed as Muzak?

Without most people realizing it,there has been a revolution in office work over the last ten years. Before that time, large computers were only used by large, rich companies that could afford the investment. With the advancement of technology, small computers have come onto the market, which are capable of doing the work that used to be done by much larger and expensive computers,so now most smaller companies can use them.
The main development in small computers has been in the field of word processors (处理器),or WPS as they are often called.40% of British offices are now estimated to have a word processor and this percentage is growing fast.
There are many advantages in using a word processor for both secretary and manager. The secretary is freed from a lot of daily work, such as re?typing letters and storing papers. He or she can use this time to do other more interesting work for the boss. From a manager’s point of view, secretarial time is being made better use of and money can be saved by doing daily jobs automatically outside office hours.
But is it all good? If a lot of daily secretarial work can be done automatically, surely this will mean that fewer secretaries will be needed.Another worry is the increasing medical problems related to work with visual display units (显示器).The case of a slow loss of sight among people using word processors seems to have risen greatly. It is also feared that if a woman works at a VDU for long hours, the unborn child in her body might be killed.Safety screens to put over a VDU have been invented but few companies in England bother to buy them.
Whatever the arguments for and against word processor, they are a key feature (特征) of this revolution in office practice.

Many colleges and universities in the United States have guidelines for what they consider reasonable budgets(预算) for personal spending.
Senem Bakar is the assistant director of International Student Services at American University in Washington,D.C..She suggests that students budget at least 1,300 dollars for a nine-month school year. This will help pay for things like transportation, telephone bills, supplies and entertainment.Paul Butler is the financial manager in the Office of International Services at Indiana University in Bloomington. He says the advice there is to have at least 2,400 dollars for twelve months in the United States.
Indiana and many other schools also offer advice on ways to manage spending and save money, for example, for entertainment, look for free concerts or museums.Want to go to a movie? Prices are usually lower in the daytime than at night.
American University advises students to check newspaper advertisements for sales and to use money-saving coupons (优惠券).If a product is “on sale,” that means it is being offered for a limited time at a reduced price.Senem Bakar says students learn that in the United States they can find almost everything on sale somewhere.
Also, many banks offer special services to students, like flee checking accounts, including a debit card (借记卡).Debit cards can be used almost anywhere as credit cards are accepted.Millions of Americans now use a debit card or credit card, instead of paper money or checks, to make most of their purchases. With a credit card, you are borrowing money every time you use it.Debit cards are different. They are linked directly to a checking account so you are paying with your own money.Debit cards, also known as check cards, do not have interest charges. But users are charged if they try to spend more than the amount available in their account. These fees can be costly even if you overspend by just a few cents.

Codes and ciphers have played an important role in the history of the word.Julius Caesar, the Roman ruler who defeated almost all the countries in Europe about 2 000 years ago, used a cipher when he sent secret messages to his troops.During American Revolution,George Washington’s spies used a kind of code to send him information about the enemy before his military (军事的) action. In World War Ⅱ, the American“broke”, or figured out,Japan’s most important navy codes and got enough information to destroy a powerful Japanese fleet(舰队).
Storekeepers use codes to mark their goods. The codes show how much was paid for the goods or when they were added to the stock.Businessman use codes to hide plans from their business enemies.Sometimes personal letters or diaries are written in code. Many people enjoy figuring out codes and ciphers simply as a hobby.
In the 16th century, codes and ciphers were very popular among scientists. They wrote messages to each other in code so that no one else would learn their secrets.Geronimo Gardano,an Italian astrologer(星相家), mathematician, and doctor, invented the trellis ciphers. He took two sheets of paper and cut exactly the same holes in each one. Then he sent one sheet, which he called a trellis, to a friend and kept the other for himself.Whenever he wanted to write a message, he put his trellis, over the clean sheet of paper and wrote the secret message through the holes.
Then he removed the trellis and filed the rest of the paper with words that would make sense.
When his friends received it, he put his trellis over the writing and read the secret message.
