One of the most popular street foods found in China is no doubt the barbecue. A new program, called Chinese Barbecue, tells the story of this popular food baked over hot coals on just about every street corner in cities and towns across the country. The barbecue is an important part of people's nightlife.
Shown on June 20, the program has had more than 25 million clicks on the video site . To find the most popular barbecue stalls (摊位), the production team travelled to more than 500 locations in 30 cities across the country. Some viewers compare Chinese Barbecue to Midnight Diner, a Japanese TV program telling stories from late night in formal Japanese bars.
“I'm happy to hear this comparison because Midnight Diner is a good program, and we share the same topic—night food,” said Chinese Barbecue's director Chen Yingjie. “However, they are quite different.” He said that Midnight Diner focused more on food itself, though there was some conversation while people were eating. However, the night food scene of Chinese people means joy and a more lively atmosphere. People eating these barbecue snacks develop a feeling of connection, which can be a cure for loneliness.
The barbecue, regarded as the most ordinary and common night street snack, is different from home-made food by mothers as that is a symbol of family and kinship(亲属关系). The barbecue stall is where you go to become linked to people in society. And unlike official business lunches, during which people are rather polite, the barbecue lets people relax with old friends and new friends, leaving a lasting impression of friendship.
The world, as a whole, holds deep-rooted good emotions toward the barbecue, either for the taste or for the warmth produced by fire. “What we should do is present the Chinese barbecue just the way it is. Because of its special ingredients, ways of cooking and more importantly, the special environment and people, the world will recognize it and might fall in love with it just as we do,” said Chen.

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade, yes, and drink all of them. Then you're ready for an adventure.
Researchers from the University of Sussex in England say they have found for the first time experimental evidence that sour tastes lead to more risk-taking behaviour in a paper published on 7 June, 2019.
In the study, 168 volunteers from the UK and Vietnam were given a 20ml solution representing one of the five main taste groups: bitter, salty, sour, sweet and umami(鲜味). The tasters then took part in a computerized test that measures risk-taking: they got paid to blow up a digital balloon. The more air in the balloon, the more money they could get; they could cash out whenever they wanted. But if the balloon popped or exploded Bye bye, potential winnings.
When the researchers studied the performance of the volunteers, they found the people who'd tasted sourness were much more likely to keep pumping up the balloon compared with people who'd got a taste of the other solutions. On average, sour tasters were 39% more likely to push the balloon to its limits than sweet tasters, 20.5% more than bitter, 16.03% more than salty and 40.29% more than umami.
This finding makes a degree of sense—without taking risks, we don't learn anything new. And it is obvious that people with negative emotions such as anxiety and depression are unwilling to take risks. So, the researchers argue, if you have these emotions, maybe adding more sour foods into your diet could help keep that aversion(厌恶)in check. Then you'd be more likely to take chances, like talking to a stranger, and that will lead to self-improvement.

It's common that you dine out with background music filling the restaurant. Today, mealtime music has become so popular that we ignore how listening to music affects our dining experience. 1
People Eat On the Beat
Just as listening to fast music while exercising tends to make people run faster, studies have shown that fast tunes actually make diners eat faster. 2 They play songs with fast music during a busy lunch rush and select more relaxing songs when there are plenty of open tables.
Music Changes the Concept of Time
3 Studies have shown that playing classical music during eating can let people loose in the most effective way. Playing familiar songs, on the other hand, actually helps people judge how long they've been staying.
Music Influences Behavior
Studies have proved that music can influence the behavior of listeners. 4 In contrast, quiet and relaxing music stimulates polite talks and creates a more romantic atmosphere.
Music Changes How Food Tastes
Research has indicated that the sound and frequency play a big role in how our brain reacts to the taste. 5 High frequencies add to sweetness while low frequencies enhance bitterness. And loud background noise has the tendency to lower the overall enjoyment of food.
A.Time flies when you're having fun.
B.Many restaurateurs have used this research to control the pace as needed.
C.Loud music tends to encourage loud conversations and increased drinking.
D.Certain tunes and songs can even affect our feeling of food when we are eating it.
E.Researchers look at whether or not loud, fast music may increase the amount of eaten food.
F.The louder the music, the more cookies, chips, and sugary drinks shoppers end up adding to their carts.
G.Many studies say that music can actually affect the eating pace, the time concept, table behavior and food tastes.

Ⅰ.A
Shown on June 20, the program has had more than 25 million clicks on the video site . 故选A。 A new program, called Chinese Barbecue, tells the story of this popular food baked over hot coals on just about every street corner in cities and towns across the country.
A new program, called Chinese Barbecue, tells the story of this popular food baked over hot coals可知,《人生一串》呈现的只有烧烤,所以排除A项;而C项“它展示的是饮食习惯”的信息原文未提及;根据第二段最后一句中的
烧烤 2.compare...to...
And unlike official business lunches, during which people are rather polite, the barbecue lets people relax with old friends and new friends, leaving a lasting impression of friendship. 分析 本句中during which people are rather polite是“介词+关系代词”引导的非限制性定语从句,修饰先行词official business lunches;leaving a lasting impression of friendship是现在分词短语作结果状语。
168 volunteers from the UK and Vietnam可知,志愿者来自英国和越南,所以A项信息与原文不符;根据第四段第一句中的they found the people who'd tasted sour were much more likely to keep pumping up the balloon compared with people who'd got a taste of the other solutions可知,志愿者喝过饮料之后吹气球,所以B项“他们在吹起气球后得到一种口味的饮料”与原文信息不符;根据第三段后三句可知,志愿者的气球里的空气越多,他们能得到的钱就越多,但如果气球被吹爆就一分钱也得不到,所以C项“那些吹爆数字气球的人能得到更多的钱”与原文信息不符。
故选A项。
When the researchers studied the performance of the volunteers, they found the people who'd tasted sour were much more likely to keep pumping up the balloon compared with people who'd got a taste of the other solutions. 的时候”;动词found后是省略了that的宾语从句;who'd tasted sour和who'd got a taste of the other solutions都是who引导的定语从句,分别修饰其前面的先行词people。
Today, mealtime music has become so popular that we ignore how listening to music affects our dining experience.
2.B 根据上一句中的studies have shown that fast tunes actually make diners eat faster可知,研究表明快节奏的曲子实际上让就餐者吃得更快,也就是说音乐影响就餐速度;结合下一句They play songs with fast music during a busy lunch rush and select more relaxing songs when there are plenty of open tables.
Music Changes the Concept of Time可知,本段主要讲述的是音乐改变时间概念,A项“Time flies when you're having fun.” 故选A。
In contrast, quiet and relaxing music stimulates polite talks and creates a more romantic atmosphere.
有效的,起作用的 3.on the other hand 另一方面 4.in contrast 相反;相比之下 5.indicate v.

Over the past few months, people in the United States have been watching some unusual television advertisements. They are unusual because they advertise a product that no American uses now or is likely to use in the future.
The advertisements show that a product called golden rice will help prevent blindness in millions of children.
None of these children live in the United States. They live in countries where white rice forms the main part of the diet. Too much white rice without other food causes lack of vitamin A. This can generate blindness.
Golden rice has been developed to solve this problem through genetic(基因的) engineering. As well as TV advertisements, most news media carried stories about this great scientific development that would help some of the poorest children in the world.
It might also save the science of genetic engineering. People in Europe and America have learned more about genetically modified (转基因的) food over the past few years. And the more they learn, the less they like what they hear. People like science. And people like to eat food. But they would like the two things to keep apart.
The truth is that a child would have to eat 9,000 grams of golden rice every day to get enough vitamin A.And Gordon Conway of the Rockefeller Foundation, which helped the development of golden rice, says that the advertisements have gone too far.
Perhaps the main purpose of golden rice is to get people to accept genetically modified food. The TV advertisements send a very clear message—if you don't accept this technology then poor children will go blind. It has cost the US $50 million to get that message across. That would buy a lot of food for poor children.
What do the people who are said to benefit from golden rice think of being part of this great scientific and social argument Nobody knows. Nobody has asked them.
1.Why does the author think children in the US need no golden rice
A.They don't need vitamin A.
B.They have all kinds of food.
C.It is genetically modified food.
D.There isn't enough vitamin A in it.
2.What is the main reason why golden rice is advertised in the US
A.Golden rice will prevent blindness in children.
B.Golden rice is the first genetically modified food.
C.People know little about genetically modified food.
D.People have not fully accepted genetically modified food.
3.According to the text, what kind of food do people in Europe and America like best
A.Food that is rich in vitamin A.
B.Food produced in poor countries.
C.Food produced with no help from science.
D.Food produced through genetic engineering.
4.What is the author's opinion of the TV advertisements
A.They are believable.
B.They need improvement.
C.They are not telling the truth.
D.They are put in a wrong place.

The notion of building brand personality is promoted by Starbucks as a part of company culture to embed(把……牢牢地嵌入) meaning in their products and thus attract more customers.
Starbucks literally changed the definition of “a good cup of coffee”. For Starbucks, the brand had three elements: coffee, 1 and stores. Strict control over the quality and processing of the beans 2 that the coffee would be of the highest possible quality. Outstanding store personnel were employed and trained in coffee knowledge and 3 service. Store design, atmosphere and aroma(香味) all 4 the “Starbucks Experience”.
Almost all Starbucks stores were corporately owned and controlled. Starbucks prided itself on the “Starbucks Experience”, 5 coffee to provide a unique experience for its customers.
6 those traditional coffee houses providing you with the grab-and-go service, Starbucks provides you with more than coffee. You get great people, first-rate music, a comfortable and upbeat meeting place, and 7 advice on brewing excellent coffee at home. At home you're part of a family. At work you're part of a company. And somewhere in between is a place where you can sit back and be yourself. That's what a Starbucks store has been 8 to creating for its customers—a kind of “the third place” where they can 9 , reflect, read, chat or listen.
The green Starbucks logo is a mermaid(美人鱼) that looks like the end of the double image of the sea. It was designed by Terry Heckler, who got the 10 from the wooden statue of the sea. Mermaid logo also 11 original and modern meanings: her face is very simple, but with modern abstract forms of packaging; the middle is black and white, the only color on the outside surrounded by a circle.
Starbucks makes the typical American culture gradually broken down into elements of 12 : the visual warmth, hearing the way, smelling the aroma of coffee and so on. Just think, through the huge glass windows, watching the crowded streets, 13 sipping a coffee flavor, which is in line with the “Yapi”, the feeling of experience in the 14 life.
The 15 of Starbucks is not about the coffee, although it's great coffee. Coffee is only a carrier. Coffee consumption, to a great extent, is an emotional and cultural level of consumption.

Perhaps the main purpose of golden rice is to get people to accept genetically modified food. People in Europe and America have learned more about genetically modified (转基因的) food over the past few years.
People like science. And people like to eat food. But they would like the two things to keep apart.
目的;用途 4.get...across 传达;转达 5.benefit from 得益于;从……
consist of由……组成;benefit from从……
go beyond超出;come across遇到;make up弥补;depend on取决于。
regardless of不顾;in addition to除…… 相比;in terms of在……
be committed to表示“致力于”,故A项正确。
根据空后的from the wooden statue of the sea可知,这个设计灵感是从木制的海洋雕像中获得的,故B项正确。
根据空后的the visual warmth, hearing the way, smelling the aroma of coffee and so on可知,此处指“体验元素”,故D项正确。
That's what a Starbucks store has been committed to creating for its customers—a kind of “the third place”where they can escape, reflect, read, chat or listen.
what引导表语从句且在从句中作creating的宾语;where引导定语从句,修饰先行词“the third place”。
故填back。

Culture and Cuisine
The United States is known for jazz and blue jeans. But travel to Paris and ask an average French citizen about American cuisine and he's likely to answer, “McDonalds.” Ask any American citizen on any American street the same thing and I'm afraid you'd get the same answer, or something close to it.
Hamburgers, hot dogs and fries are all fine, but with American malls and other outlets standardizing everything from clothing to food, the sad truth is that American cuisine is becoming more homogeneous—all the same—no matter where you live. True, many Americans are eating more multiple foods these days, but these are largely the cuisines of immigrant groups, and they are quite likely to be affected by homogenization of American cuisine.
So what exactly is American cuisine Well, to some extent it is a reflection of our melting pot culture, meaning that Europeans made huge contributions in the form of wheat, dairy products, pork, beef and poultry. But American cuisine also includes products that once were known only to the New World, including potatoes, corn, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and peanuts.
The one region of the country where you still find all these things in daily use is the Deep South. The South lost the Civil War, but children of the southerners are winning the battle to preserve and throw themselves into their cooking traditions—and in this case one of the few cuisines can truly be called American, which is why we're pleased to have Low Country Cuisine in this issue of food innovation. That's right—grits and gravy(粗燕麦粉和肉汁) are back in a big way in cities like Charleston and Savannah. The truth is, they never really left, but up until a decade ago Low Country Cuisine was more common at home than in restaurants.
In fact, a large number of tourists now go to the lower Atlantic region in order to experience this extraordinary cuisine for themselves. Time will tell whether Low Country Cuisine becomes popular in other regions of the country in the way that, say, Italian cuisine has, but it's amazing and heartening to see one of our true cultural treasures enjoying renewed popularity in these increasingly homogeneous times.
1.According to the passage, American cuisine impresses people as being .

D.disagreeable and unpleasant
2.It can be seen that the writer feels regretful that .

Like the problem of hunger, food waste is a global problem, which resists(抵抗)to quick fixes. But if each of us takes steps to cut food waste in our homes, we will lower the burden on the environment and help to feed more people. Here are some of the tested tips.
1 . Before heading to the grocery store, we should make a meal plan. Buy only the food we cry out for the meal plan. Well-planned shopping not only cuts the food waste but also protects our wallet.
Buy frozen produce. 2 . So start buying frozen vegetables instead. And there's no nutritional loss here. Frozen vegetables are just as nutritious as fresh ones—sometimes even more so.
Make juice or soup. When we happen to have more fresh produce than we can eat, take out the expensive juice-maker that we never use and treat ourselves to some fresh juice. 3 .
Use clear containers to store leftovers. 4 . When we can see what is in the containers, they're just less possible to disappear into the back of the fridge.
Hopefully, one or two of these ideas can be helpful in fixing the food waste problem.
5 . If each of us is able to keep just one more pound of food out of the trash each week, together we could cut food waste by over 5 million pounds each year!
A.Shop more frequently
B.Plan meals before shopping
C.Also be sure to share your tips with us
D.And don't undervalue the effect of these small changes

Mike licked(舔) the last of the chocolate ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and headed off to the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim meet. When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and swift. Mike climbed out of the pool, smiling. He had just won first place.
A week later, it was time for another swim meet. Like before, Mike decided to enjoy his favorite flavored ice cream before they left home. As Mike climbed out of the pool, his teammates patted(拍) him on the back. He'd taken first place again in his race.
As it turned out, Mike decided to have some chocolate ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets that came up. He began to think of it as his lucky charm. After several months of being placed in the top positions of every race he swam, Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wouldn't admit it, but he was also starting to feel a little uncomfortable. All that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer's build.
It didn't take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place...and then third place and then last place in his races. The lucky chocolate ice cream had lost its magic. On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him. “Mike, I think we need to talk about this. We all love ice cream, but it's got lots of fat and sugar in it, and it's not healthy for your body to take in so much of it.” Mike unwillingly agreed. His father offered to go running with him a few days a week to help enhance his muscles. The extra weight soon disappeared, and Mike found himself breathing more easily during the swim.
It was the last meet of the season, and Mike wasn't sure what to expect. He felt healthy again, but he didn't know if he still had the excellent speed in the pool.

But travel to Paris and ask an average French citizen about American cuisine and he's likely to answer, “McDonalds.” Ask any American citizen on any American street the same thing and I'm afraid you'd get the same answer, or something close to it.可知,人们对美国烹饪的印象是以麦当劳为标志的烹饪类型;结合第二段第一句中the sad truth is that American cuisine is becoming more homogeneous—all the same—no matter where you live可知,可悲的事实是,无论你住在哪里,美国的烹饪都变得越来越单一。 故选A。
根据第二段第一句中的the sad truth is that American cuisine is becoming more homogeneous—all the same—no matter where you live可知,可悲的事实是,无论你住在哪里,美国的烹饪变得越来越单一。
The one region of the country where you still find all these things in daily use is the Deep South. That's right—grits and gravy(粗燕麦粉和肉汁) are back in a big way in cities like Charleston and Savannah. 根据第四段最后一句中的but up until a decade ago Low Country Cuisine was more common at home than in restaurants可知,十年前低地菜肴在家里比在饭馆里更普遍一些,而不是C项“粗燕麦粉和肉汁在十年前更受欢迎”的信息;也根据此处排除D项“餐馆里很少供应粗燕麦粉和肉汁”。
根据最后一段最后一句中but it's amazing and heartening to see one of our true cultural treasures enjoying renewed popularity in these increasingly homogeneous times可知,作者的态度是积极并支持的。

Time will tell whether Low Country Cuisine becomes popular in other regions of the country in the way that, say, Italian cuisine has, but it's amazing and heartening to see one of our true cultural treasures enjoying renewed popularity in these increasingly homogeneous times.
Before heading to the grocery store, we should make a meal plan. 所以本段内容与做计划相关,且B项Plan meals before shopping与此处make a meal plan相呼应。
2.G 根据下一句So start buying frozen vegetables instead.
3.E 根据本段的段首句Make juice or soup.
4.F 根据本段的段首句Use clear containers to store leftovers. F项中by putting the leftovers in see-through containers与此处clear containers呼应,所以F项“我们可以通过把剩余食物放在透明的容器里做得更好”符合语境。
2.take steps to do sth.
When we happen to have more fresh produce than we can eat, take out the expensive juice-maker that we never use and treat ourselves to some fresh juice. 的时候”;that we never use是that引导的定语从句,修饰先行词juice-maker。

Once there was a princess. Her father was the king. He wanted her to marry someone that would make her laugh. Many princes came from around the world. But no one made her laugh.
Three brothers lived near the king's castle. They wanted to marry the princess too. So they began walking to the castle. They each had a loaf of bread. As they walked, they saw a sad old man. “Can you share some food ” the old man asked the first brother. The first brother said “No” and then walked away. Then the first brother fell, and hurt his leg. He couldn't walk to the castle. He went home. The second brother passed the old man. “Can you share some food ” asked the old man. “No,” said the second brother. He turned and walked away. Like his brother, he fell and hurt his leg. He also went home.
Dale, the third brother, also saw the old man. “Can you share some food ” asked the old man. “Yes,” said Dale. He and the old man shared the loaf of bread. “For your kindness, I have a gift for you,” said the old man. “It will make the princess laugh.” The old man gave Dale a goose with golden feathers. Dale did not know how a goose would make the princess laugh. But he thanked the old man and went on his way.
Paragraph 1:
As Dale walked, a girl touched the golden feathers of the goose, but suddenly, she was stuck (粘住)!
Paragraph 2:
When a man passed Dale and the three girls, he tapped a girl on the shoulder, and he was stuck, too.
Para. 1 As Dale walked, a girl touched the golden feathers of the goose, but suddenly, she was stuck (粘住)!
Para. 2 When a man passed Dale and the three girls, he tapped a girl on the shoulder, and he was stuck, too.

Dear Peter,
I know you have a preference for Chinese food and drink, so I'm writing to recommend a popular Chinese drink for breakfast—the soybean milk.
Just like tofu, soybean milk can also date back to the Han Dynasty. Its white color makes it look like milk, but it is actually made from beans. When heated, it gives off a refreshing smell. Additionally, it is not only delicious but also nutritious since it's rich in plant protein.
If you are interested, why not have a try I'm sure you'll fall in love with it.
