Drew Lanham grew up on the farm his grandfather built in Edgefield County, S. C. in the 1920s. Lanham, now 54, says his father felt a responsibility to stay on the land and care for the animals and crops there. To Lanham, that family land was connected with his love for birds. He would spend hours observing birds like the prairie warbler and the bobwhite quail when he was young.
Lanham said he believed from a very early age he would be someone who studied birds. However, he lost track of that dream on the road to becoming an engineer. "Before I left for college, everyone around me said, 'You're good at math and science. Be an engineer. Make money, Drew.' And for a while, I tried that, but hated every last moment of it," he said.
When he took a return trip to the farm, the farm was unrecognizable. All of these wonderful forests that he'd grown up in had been cut. But some wildlife remained. "I remember the day when I left. I was driving up this dirt road, and the birds were singing 'Zee, zee, zee'," he said. The birds' song lit a fire under Lanham. After his visit back to the farm, he couldn't see himself returning to work as an engineer. Therefore, he got on track to study to become an ornithologist(鸟类学家).
Lanham researched the eastern bluebird. "The work was often hot and hard and long hours. But there were moments when I would look up and there would be the songs of birds. These moments made me realize that I was doing what I had always dreamed of," he said.
Lanham thinks that his turn towards the study of nature is carrying his father's legacy(遗产) forward.

A.He enjoyed studying math and science. B.He was persuaded by people around.
C.He wanted to make big money. D.He lost interest in birds then.
2.What happened during Lanham's return trip to the farm

A.Lanham continued his father's responsibility. B.Lanham's father would be proud of his son.
C.Lanham's job was better than his father's. D.Lanham expanded the farming land.

We all know donating blood provides a vital lifeline to those in need, but a growing body of research suggests that it could have health benefits for the donor too.
Findings have shown that donating blood reduces the risk of heart attacks and even cancer.
It even bums quite a bit of energy — 650 calories (卡路里) for every pint (568 mL) given.
The news could come as a promotion (宣传) of British blood banks which use an average of 7,000 units of blood every day.
It is thought that the benefits arise from lowering high iron levels.
Iron affects how thick and sticky the blood is. High iron levels cause the blood to be thicker.
Raised iron levels also keep blood from flowing smoothly.
Because donating blood removes some of its iron, it may therefore have a protective benefit if done on a consistent basis by helping thin the blood.
According to a study from the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers found that those aged 43 to 61 had fewer heart attacks when they donated blood every six months.
A study of 2,682 men from Finland found they had an 88 percent reduced risk of heart attacks than those who didn't donate, reported Medical Daily.
Likewise, a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute also links iron to an increased cancer risk.
The four-and-a-half-year study involving 1,200 people found those who made blood donations twice a year had a lower risk of cancer and death than those who didn't.
However, these benefits depend on making donations on a regular basis, rather than once in a while.
Another side effect of donating blood is that it can bum a large number of calories too.
The University of California in San Diego says that for every one pint of blood donated, 650 calories are burned as the body must fill itself up.
Although this seems to be an attractive effort-free way to lose weight, the NHS Blood and Transplant centre still encourages people to donate for the benefit of others first, rather than for themselves.
1.How can giving blood prevent heart disease
A.By keeping blood from flowing fast. B.By increasing blood's thickness.
C.By reducing iron in the blood. D.By helping iron work better.
2.What is the healthiest way to donate blood
A.Give blood regularly. B.Give blood every six months.
C.Make donations in middle age D.Donate a small amount each time.
3.The author mentions the three studies to _________.
A.prove the serious harm of cancer B.solve the problems of giving blood
C.explain the reasons for heart disease D.show the benefits of blood donations
4.According to the NHS Blood and Transplant centre, donating blood _________.
A.is an attractive way to lose weight B.should be based on selflessness
C.involves some degree of risk D.may burn too many calories

I love to read before I go to sleep. It usually makes me feel calm. But a big part of this depends on what I read. I love to read Oor Wullie and The Broons. Very often I'm smiling before I go to sleep.

I decide to write about this in a blog because I find that so many of us go to sleep with stress. Before we go to sleep, we may run over the day in our minds, and worry about tomorrow. We also may watch the news on TV, read the news on our smart phones or tablets, or even answer work emails. But the news is rarely proclaiming(宣告) all the good that's happening in the world and work emails make us feel that we're still at work. All these things may leave us a stressful sleep.
Oor Wullie and The Broons are not the only things I ever read at night. I sometimes read novels but, with the odd exception, I mostly avoid anything that is too mentally taxing or stimulating late at night unless it's something that inspires me or is clearly helpful in my life.
And even if I do read something mentally stimulating, when I feel myself getting tired I lay that book down and pick up a trusty old Oor Wullie or The Broons for the last 10 or 15 minutes. Doing this makes my mind quiet and helps ensure I get a peaceful night's sleep. Reading about Wullie or Maw and Paw Broon is like a comfort blanket for me.
I'd suggest you find light-hearted reading as a comfort blanket at bedtime, especially if you find yourself stressed or depressed a lot of the time, or if you find difficulty winding at the end of a day. It is the thing that can gently turn your attention towards lightness and ease.
If your material makes you laugh, then you may feel even better. Several studies show that laughter boosts happy chemicals in the brain, it strengthens the immune system, it's good for the heart, and it is most definitely good for mental health. It even helps us improve our relationships.
And if you do happen to pick up a copy of Oor Wullie or The Broons, I hope you find it just as entertaining as I do.
1.What can we learn about Oor Wullie and The Broons
A.They make people run over the past days.
B.They are the best books to be read before people sleep.
C.They are extremely popular with young people.
D.They make people feel relaxed and happy.
2.What can we know from the text
A.Oor Wullie and The Broons are the author's favorite books.
B.A comfortable blanket makes people go to sleep easily.
C.The author sometimes reads something about inspirations.
D.Reading something stimulating at night helps get a peaceful sleep.
3.What is Paragraph 6 mainly about
A.What material brings us laughter. B.How laughter affects our health.
C.What benefits laughter brings to us. D.Why laughter is good for us.
4.What's the main purpose of the text
A.To show the importance of reading before sleeping.
B.To prove the importance of a good mood before sleeping.
C.To tell us how to make ourselves stay relaxed before sleeping.
D.To explain how to choose a book worthy to be read before sleeping.
D
I don't think there is anything more important than health. "Health is the greatest wealth," wise people say. You can't be good at your studies or work well when you are ill.

If you have a headache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you should go to see the doctor. The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse, test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After that, he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is to follow his advice.
Speaking about doctor's advice, I can't help telling you a funny story. An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease. He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule: "Eat with pleasure, drink with pleasure and enjoy life as it is." The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn't smoke more than one cigarette a day. A month later the gentleman came into the doctor's office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man. "But you know, doctor," he said, "it's not easy to begin smoking at my age."
1.The writer thinks that _______.
A.health is more important than wealth B.work is as important as studies
C.medicine is more important than pleasure D.nothing is more important than money
2.The doctor usually tells his patient what to do ________.
A.without examining the patient B.after he has examined the patient
C.if the patient doesn't take medicine D.unless the patient feels pain
3.The underlined part means "_________".
A.he was feeling better than ever B.he wasn't a healthy man
C.he was feeling worse than before D.he will be well again
4.From the last sentence of the passage, we learn the man ________ before the doctor told him not to smoke more than one cigarette a day.
A.was a heavy smoker B.didn't smoke so much
C.didn't smoke D.began to learn to smoke

David Aguilar is a boy born without his right arm. Because of that, Aguilar has always stood out from the persons at the same age. As a child, he was very nervous to be in front of other guys, because he thought that he was different. While growing up, Aguilar had to learn how to do everything with just one hand. Although he was able to do almost everything people with two hands can do, Aguilar explained that he still thought about getting a prosthetic hand (假手) throughout his childhood just so that he could look a little bit more normal and fit in with everyone else.
When Aguilar told his parents that those arms were cool because they were mechanical(机械的) and could make you look like a robot, his parents began thinking about buying a prosthetic arm for Aguilar. However, when Aguilar's parents started looking into getting their son a prosthetic hand, they discovered how expensive it was. And they couldn't afford to buy one for their son.
Yet when Aguilar was playing with his Lego(乐高) at the age of nine, he started experimenting with building his own prosthetic arm. He didn't know it at the time, but his favorite toy was about to change the way he viewed himself as well as change the course of his life. At first, he just wanted to create something that could help him and be part of him. As he linked the blocks together around his arm, he just started making this prosthesis from Lego. When Aguilar looked at himself in the mirror for the first time with his Lego prosthesis, he was amazed by what he saw.
However, the arm wasn't the most strong and would often bend and break if he tried to do any heavy lifting with it. So almost ten years later, Aguilar set out to build himself a new prosthetic arm and he hoped to help more people who didn't have enough money to buy prosthetic hands. One day, one of his dad's friends gave him a Lego plane as a gift, but all he saw was an arm.
Paragraph 1:
Since then, Aguilar has built two more models of his Lego arm. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Paragraph 2:
