Have you ever thought about that thing you use when you cut yourself Band-aids haven’t been around forever! Let’s look at some old inventions we use every day.
Band-aids
Do you use band-aids when you cut your finger The first band-aid was made by American Earle Dickson in 1921. The idea came to him by chance. Dickson’ wife Josephine often cut her fingers in the kitchen. At that time
gauze (纱布) and adhesive tape (胶带) didn’t come together. People had to cut them in the right size. Dickson found these bandages (绷带) were always too big and soon fell off. So the put a piece of gauze on the center of a piece of tape. This is how he made the first band-aid. Later, people all around the world began to use Dickson’s new bandage.
Drinking straw
In 1888, American Marvin Stone invented the first paper drinking straw. Before that, people used grass straws. Stone made his straw by winding (缠绕) paper around a pencil and sticking it together. He used paraffin-coated (涂蜡的) paper, so the straws would not become wet. He then decided the ideal straw was 21.5 centimeters long. It should also be thin enough to stop things people suck up, like lemon seeds. Other kinds of paper and plastic straws came later.
Bubble gum
Bubble gum was invented by accident. In 1928, American gum company worker Walter E. Diemer played around with new chewing gum recipes. Chewing gum had already been invented more than half a century before then. But Diemer found that the gum he made was less sticky (粘的) and easier to stretch (伸展). He blew a bubble and then saw the possibilities. He took some of his new gum to a shop and it sold out in a single afternoon. Since then, Dubble Bubble — the first name for bubble gum — has made kids happy all around the world.
Pick something you use every day, for example, your bicycle, pencil or toothbrush. Try to imagine what it will be like in 100 years and describe it to your class.
