Jerome Kern is often called the father of American musical theatre. Kern is remembered for the hundreds of songs he wrote for musical plays and movies. To a great extent, he led the development of the first truly American theatre music.
Jerome Kern began his career as a songwriter in theatres in London and New York City. Success came quickly. By the early 1920s, Kern was a successful young composer for Broadway musical comedies. He worked with each song until he was satisfied that the music was perfect.
American musical plays at that time were still usually copied from European ones. Kern wanted to try something completely new. He thought a musical play should be a real work of art, not just a collection of songs and dances. He thought songs should help move the action of the play along, by showing a person's feelings. Kern wanted to do a truly American musical, with real American characters and real situations.
In 1927, he found the story he wanted. It was the book Show Boat by American writer Edna Ferber. Show Boat takes place in the 1880s on a passenger steam boat that travels along the Mississippi River. The boat is called a show boat because singers and dancers entertain the passengers. The captain of the show boat has a daughter who is a singer on the boat. She falls in love with a man who earns his money by gambling with cards.
The story dealt with some unusually serious issues for a musical. It showed the hard lives of African Americans in the South. And it showed marriage between people of different races, which was against the law at that time. Although serious in places, Show Boat was not a tragedy. The public and critics loved it. Show Boat became the greatest work of American musical theatre. Music critics said Kern's effect on musical theatre was revolutionary. It was Kern's music that made the show a great success, which has been performed thousands of times all over the world.
1.The passage above is likely to appear in a ___________.
A.poster B.radio programme C.notice D.news report
2.According to the passage, Jerome Kern can be described to be ___________.
A.adventurous and sympathetic B.brave and kind
C.productive and creative D.hardworking and determined
3.The story of Show Boat is ___________.
A.serious B.light-hearted C.ridiculous D.tragic
4.The purpose of the passage is to ___________.
A.introduce Jerome Kern's life and his career
B.explain how Jerome Kern's truly American musical plays were created
C.tell us the unusual story of Show Boat
D.show the differences between American musical plays and European ones

Creativity is an important quality in our complex and fast-changing world, as it allows us to create new solutions for a wide range of problems and come up with fresh ideas. The question of what promotes creative ability has long been studied, and while music has previously been shown to benefit cognition(认知), little is known about how listening to music affects creative ability specifically.
To study the effect of music on creative ability, researchers had 155 participants complete questionnaires and divided them into five experimental groups. Four groups each listened to one of four different types of music that were classified as calm, happy, sad or anxious, depending on their different emotions (positive, negative) and excitement (high, low) , while the last group listened to silence.
After the music started playing, participants performed various tasks that tested their creative thinking. Participants who came up with the most original and useful solutions to a task scored higher in divergent(发散的) creativity, while participants who came up with the single best possible solution to a task scored higher in convergent(聚合的) creativity.
The researchers found that listening to happy music, which they define as classical music that is positive and high in encouragement, promotes more different creative thinking compared to silence. It is shown that the changes involved in the happy music situation may improve flexibility in thinking. As a result, additional solutions might be considered by the participants, which may not have occurred to them readily if they were performing the task in silence.
This study shows that creative ability may be improved through happy music, and further research could explore how different sounds affect creativity and it includes participants of different cultures, age groups and levels of music experience. The researchers say their study is useful, showing that listening to happy music could promote creative thinking in inexpensive and efficient ways in various scientific, educational and organisational settings.
1.How did the researchers mainly carry out their research
A.By mapping. B.By comparison. C.By discussion. D.By imagining.
2.What does the underlined word "readily" in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Easily. B.Willingly. C.Awkwardly. D.Toughly.
3.What do the researchers think of the result of their study
A.It is unacceptable. B.It can be used widely.
C.It has no practical use. D.It has been used in many fields.
4.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Different Music Benefits Educated People Differently
B.Enjoying Music May Make You Feel Relaxed
C.Music Is the Cheapest Way to Improve Yourself
D.Listening to Happy Music May Improve Creativity

The Last Supper is regarded as one of the super masterpieces in the whole field of pictorial art. Tradition has it that Leonardo Da Vinci worked for ten years on the painting, so that the monks in the church were annoyed at the delay. It was said that Leonardo often painted continuously from dawn to night without eating his meals. But at other times he spent hours before the picture, lost in contemplation, examining, comparing, and measuring his figures.
This inactivity aroused the anger of the fussy Prior, the head of the church, who belonged to the large group of those who believed that the busier a man seems, the more he achieves; and so he tried to find fault with the idle painter. Leonardo was slightly unhappy and explained to somebody else that there is a great difference between the work of the creative artist and the stonemason. The creative artist needed time for contemplation; he might be busiest when his hands were idlest. Just now he needed two heads to complete the picture: that of Christ, for which no model on earth could be found, from where the man was to be found whose face would express the strength, and beauty, and tenderness, and deep sorrow of the Christ; then he also needed a head of Judas, and that was hard to find as well, from where the man was whose face could express the meanness of that base traitor.
But he would look no further; if none came his way, he would be satisfied to take Prior as a model for Judas. This threat silenced the angry Prior, who quite naturally had no desire to pass to descendants in such a fashion.
1.Why did the Prior complain about the delay
A.Because he thought that the painter idled most of the hours.
B.Because he knew that genius might be busiest when seemingly idlest.
C.Because he liked the work of a stonemason.
D.Because he was eager to be taken as a model for Judas.
2.What does the underlined word "contemplation" in Paragraph 1 mean
A.Possibility. B.Intention. C.Deep thought. D.Great expectation.
3.Which of the following is true
A.The painter was pleased with the Prior's anger.
B.The Prior was angry because he thought the painter did not work hard.
C.The painter took one of the monks as a model for Christ.
D.The painter took one of the monks as a model for Judas.
4.Why did the Prior stop complaining
A.He did not wish to be remembered like an evil traitor after he died.
B.He wanted to be painted as a tender Christ.
C.He disliked to be painted in fashionable clothes.
D.He was pleased to be a fashionable model.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150词左右。
School mornings were always busy. The first sentence I usually heard was, "It's time to rise!" It was Mom's loudest voices, and there was no way I could pretend not to hear it or hide from it.
By then, I couldn't get to the kitchen fast enough. In fact, it was a race between my sister, my brother, and me. We usually seated ourselves at the same time, sometimes knocking each other out of our places. After breakfast, we all rushed out to the bus stop as we took our lunch bags that contained a sandwich, fruit, and dessert.
Then, one day, much to my surprise, there was no dessert in my lunch! What could have happened to it Did Mom forget to make or buy it Oh, well, I thought. It's only one time, so it's no big deal. But, for the next few days, my lunch contained no dessert! So one day, after school, as soon as I got home, I asked, "Mom! Why haven't you been putting a dessert in my school lunch "
Mom answered, "Why, Eugene, I have been including a dessert in your lunch. If you're not getting it, then who is "
So then we thought of my activities, and what I did with my lunch each day. As soon as I arrived at school, I always put my lunch in the classroom closet (壁橱) along with all of the other lunches. And that brought us to Carl—the bad boy of the third-grade classroom. The teacher didn't like him in class and would send him to the closet, where he would spend most of each day.
Carl lived in a group foster home (集体寄养之家). He was loud and somewhat of a thief. He would take just about anything that wasn't fastened down (盖紧), so he wasn't welcome at school. Mom and I decided that with nothing else to do Carl was probably going through the lunches and eating what he liked.
Paragraph 1:
My mother and I talked about ways to solve this problem.

Paragraph 1:
My mother and I talked about ways to solve this problem. After some thinking, my mother said she was going to put two packages of goodies in my lunch: one for me and the other one for Carl. And then I put my lunch bag in the classroom closet as usual. One day, Carl stopped me and asked why there were always two desserts in my lunches. I told him that one was for him. He was surprised.
Paragraph 2:
Another day, Carl asked me if he could come to my house and meet my mother. I told him that he would be welcome at our house as long as he did not steal anything and did not fight or swear.
