As parents, we walk a fine line between caring for our children and teaching them how to care for themselves. When they're little, they need our help with everything. Over time, kids usually take the lead on things like feeding and dressing themselves, but it can be difficult to know when it's time for them to start doing some basic things, such as packing their own lunches for school or solving problems with teachers without a parent's help.
Blogger Amy Carney recently shared a post about the things parents should stop doing for their teens. In it, Carney shared the basic skills that she expects her kids to master by the time they hit 13, such as waking themselves up in the morning, making their own breakfast and lunch, and finishing their own homework.
Barb Harvey, a childhood behavior expert, gave me her answer: The age at which children learn to master certain skills will be different depending upon the maturity (成熟) and interest level of the child.
I asked the same question among my friends. They gave all kinds of answers, which could explain Harvey's opinion.
Therefore, there's only one expert who can determine when your kids have the ability to deal with certain skills, and that's you. If your kids aren't ready to pack their own lunches—don't sweat it. Help them learn the skills they're ready to deal with and keep working towards the end goal of raising responsible and able adults. Because if there's one thing that we can all agree on as parents, it's that time moves quickly when you're raising kids. One day you will wish they could just do things without you and the next day, you will feel upset that they do.
1.What is Amy Carney's expectation when her children are 13
A.To be a skillful cook. B.To follow Harvey's opinion.
C.To be an expert. D.To have basic skills.
2.Who can decide when the children will learn to care for themselves
A.Amy Carney. B.Barb Harvey.
C.The children. D.The parents.
3.Why will parents feel upset when their children grow up
A.Their kids can do nothing.
B.They feel less important.
C.Their children become able adults.
D.Their kids disagree on anything.
4.What does the text mainly talk about
A.Walking a fine line.
B.Blogger Amy Carney.
C.Parents and their children's growth.
D.A childhood behavior expert.

Eating spicy foods frequently may be tied to a slightly lower risk of an earlier death, according to a new study. However, more research is needed to confirm the link, experts say.
The researchers found that the people in the study who ate spicy foods one or two days a week were 10 percent less likely to die during the study, compared with those who ate spicy foods less than once a week, according to the study published in the journal The BMJ. Moreover, the people in the study who ate spicy foods three or more days a week were 14 percent less likely to die during the study, compared with those who ate spicy foods less than once a week.
However, the study was observational, and so it is too early to tell whether there is a certain relationship between eating spicy foods and lower mortality. said study author Lu Qi, an associate professor at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts. “We definitely need more data from other populations,” Qi told Live Science. “The researchers don't know why exactly the consumption of spicy foods may be linked to the drop of early death, but previous research on cells and animals has suggested several possible connections,” Qi said.
“It is unclear whether the observed associations are the direct result of spicy foods intake, or whether spicy foods are simply a marker for other beneficial but unmeasured dietary components (成分),” said Nita Forouhi, a nutritional expert. At this point, researchers don't know for sure whether eating spicy foods can have a beneficial effect on human health and mortality, Forouhi wrote. “Future research is needed to make sure whether spicy food consumption has the potential to improve health and reduce mortality directly, or if it is merely a marker of other dietary and lifestyle factors,” she said.
5.Which section of a newspaper is the article probably taken from
A.Advertisement. B.Business.

Mrs. Mullen had just got a new heart. She'd waited a year for it, she told me—not that she was complaining. In fact, Mrs. Mullen never complained about anything. She just got on with it. Although she was getting over a serious operation, she didn't even like to bother the nurses for a painkiller. She put me, and most of my patients in the hospital, to shame.
My generation are a generation of complainers. We think the world owes us something. But if the world owes anyone anything, it owes people like Mrs. Mullen. She left school at 14, even though she'd won a place at grammar school. She worked in a factory until she retired. She never had a day off sick in her life and never had a holiday—not even when she gave birth to her three children. That's nearly 50 years of hard work. I've never worked as hard as Mrs. Mullen, and I'll almost certainly never have to.
Mrs. Mullen recovered well and soon left hospital. It never occurred to me that I'd see her again, so I couldn't believe my eyes when a few weeks later I went to buy a sandwich from the hospital Friends' shop.
“What are you doing here?” I asked. “You're supposed to be resting.”
“Oh I am,” she replied. “It's only a few hours a week. I saw the ad for volunteers while I was staying here. It's my way of saying thank you for all that this hospital has done for me.”
Thank you Mrs. Mullen is the sort of person who gives back more than she takes. I asked for a cheese and tomato sandwich. She handed me egg instead—it was all they had got. I hate egg, but I decided to eat it anyway and not to complain.
9.Mrs. Mullen made the author feel ashamed because ________.
A.he liked bothering others
B.he often made complaints
C.he wasn't as brave as her
D.he didn't give her painkiller
10.We know from the text that Mrs. Mullen ________.
A.was hardworking
B.was in debt for years
C.once taught at school
D.received a good education
11.When the author met Mrs. Mullen at the shop, he________.
A.felt very surprised
B.treated her to a sandwich
C.helped her get a job there
D.asked her to rest immediately

4.but/yet'考查连词。空前意为“电脑创作的诗可能在语法和风格上都是正确的”,空后意为“一些人说这样的诗仍缺乏创造性和真实的意义”,根据句意可知,前后句之间为转折关系,故填but/yet。
5.creativity/creativeness'考查名词。
7.were written/are written'考查动词的语态和时态。
