Mom and I were putting the finishing touches to dinner, and my little niece Jessica came in to set the table. Instead of going to the dish cabinet, she went to the pantry where there was a stack of old, mismatched dinner plates on the bottom shelf.
When she had set all six plates, she stood back and sighed, “Oh, Grandma, your plates are so beautiful. Ours are all alike!” We had a good laugh about her innocent remark, but as I think back to all those years ago, I believe she was right. Those plates were beautiful.
Mom worked for the local Council on Aging as a housekeeper. She did many of the little things that allowed elderly people to stay in their own homes. Most of her clients got Meals on Wheels, a service in the 1970s. They received a hot lunch and a cold snack to have later in the evening. This is really not very much food. Every evening Mom would make to go meals on these mismatched plates covered with aluminum foil, and then deliver them to the people who she knew didn't get enough to eat.
It was about ten years before microwave ovens became common, so it was important that the food be on a plate that could be reheated in a regular oven. Instead of a cold sandwich and macaroni salad, Mom's clients dined on Beef Manhattans, pan fried chicken or meatloaf, along with veggies and a piece of pie or cake. Mom and Dad did this even after Mom left her job, and Mom continued after Dad's death until all her former clients had either passed away or moved out.
When I was cleaning out Mom's house after her death, I kept one as a souvenir (纪念品). That plate is a sweet reminder of the lessons of generosity and caring for one's neighbors that were modeled for me by my parents.

Ever called a movie theatre to find out showtime Or called a customer service centre for help Chances are you didn't speak to a human being. You probably gave commands to an Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) system. These types of systems are efficient money saving tools that allow companies to address many customers' concerns with minimum human intervention.
The technology for such a system has advanced greatly since its appearance in the 1950s. One significant recent achievement is the launch of virtual personal assistants (VPAs) on mobile phones. The most well known of these is Apple's iPhone VPA, Siri. If you tell Siri that you want to schedule lunch with a friend, “she” can set the appointment on your phone in seconds. The VPA can also hold a basic “conversation” with a sense of humour. However, it can only be set off when the human user speaks certain key phrases or words.
While the potential for communication between a human and a machine may seem exciting, this possibility concerns some people. Some experts worry about people's attachment to these machines and fear that the art of successful human to human conversation will be undeveloped in younger generations. They worry that people won't be able to display the right emotion or tone in conversations because they haven't been practising those skills. Others fear that machines will take over the functions that were traditionally performed by humans, such as customer service.
Another concern often associated with the development of new technology is the invasion of privacy. When people use certain speech recognition applications, they leave behind an audio track of their speech. When you ask a VPA for directions, your speech is often sent to a remote server and saved for processing. This digital information may lead to data mining, or the collection of large quantities of personal data.
For now, however, the continuing evolution of ASR software is thrilling. Asking for and acquiring information from an automated source has never been easier. Leading companies in the speech recognition world will make human communication with machines as seamless as possible-in other words, just like communicating with another human.

Telling someone they are not hired is never an easy job, but all hiring managers will face this difficult situation many times in their careers. While everyone fears denials on some level, it is important to understand that not everyone will fit in with every job. Further, there are times when the applicant quality will be so great, a decision to reject an applicant may not stand for that applicant's abilities but the overall quality of the field.
There are a number of methods that can be used to get the message across that a person is not hired. In many cases, especially for those who have never been called for an interview, a simple form letter may be sufficient. In other cases, where someone may have been called for an interview, a phone call or letter could be chosen to deliver the message that they were not hired. In cases where there may be an ongoing relationship with the person not hired, it may be best to break the news in person, though this has the obvious potential of being more uncomfortable. Above all, it is best to always be honest with those who didn't get the job. Lying is never acceptable.
Generally, it is not a good idea to tell someone specific reasons why they are not hired for a job. This can only lead to resentment (怨恨) and regret. However, there may be specific times when this could be a good idea. For example, if an applicant is promising and the hiring manager believes another position will be opening up that suits the applicant's skills, this could be a way to let that person know they may soon have another opportunity.
In all cases, even if you feel someone has cheated to obtain an interview, never behave in a way which shows you are superior to them. This is unprofessional and reflects very poorly not only on the hiring manager, but on the organization as a whole.
9.Why are some applicants refused according to Paragraph 1
A.They are interested in other fields.
B.They aren't qualified for the position.
C.They are afraid of making decisions.
D.They lack the courage to face failures.
10.How may a not interviewed applicant be informed of the rejection
A.By receiving a formal phone call.
B.By getting a simple form letter.
C.By checking a message online.
D.By attending a personal meeting.
11.In what case will applicants be told exactly why they are not hired
A.They regret applying for the job.
B.They demand specific explanations.
C.They may be capable of another post.
D.They have submitted false information.
12.What can be inferred about the position of hiring managers
A.It calls for professional skills.
B.It attracts the applicants most.
C.It doesn't allow for any mistake.
D.It requires honesty and ambition.

3.C'考查推理判断。本题问的是作者的母亲为什么做外带食物。根据第三段中的“They received a hot lunch...Every evening Mom would make to go meals on these mismatched plates covered with aluminum foil, and then deliver them to the people who she knew didn't get enough to eat.”

5.B 根据上句“Pocket money can give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with the money. (零花钱可以让孩子们有机会体验三件事)”。再根据后面的“They can spend it by buying things they want.
