Many high school students in the U.S. get hands-on training in construction(建造) by building real houses. The students have already received training in many areas of house construction. They put up walls and built windows and doors. This project is run by the Waterloo Career Centre. The centre offers the students different programs to prepare them for jobs in the future. Students from the Waterloo Community School District took part in the training. The students spent five days at their school learning from excellent workers. The workers taught the students how to build walls with bricks(砖).
Chris Busch works in the centre. He told the newspaper that learning such skills would help students build their own experience in their later work. They can learn how much mortar(砂浆) they need to build a safe wall. As the students worked, Busch gave them a piece of important advice. He told the students to make sure the wall stands straight and level by a tool.
Hunter Pierce was one of the students in this training. He told the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier newspaper that how much mortar you use is a very important part of the work.
“It's fun…it's something to do,” West High student Nathan Elliott told the reporter. “This kind of learning is much better than sitting in front of a computer.” Other students also said they liked this way of learning. Some said it made them excited about future work.
