A New Neighborhood Farmers Market
选自Weebly.com
Across the street from a sandwich shop and a fried chicken joint, a greenmarket sprouts up every Wednesday in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx in New York City. The market is a welcome sight in an area that does not have many options for people to buy fresh fruit and vegetables.
Mott Haven, a neighborhood in the South Bronx, is located in one of the poorest areas in the country. In other New York City neighborhoods greenmarkets are more common, but here there aren’t many places to buy healthy, organic food.
The summer of 2012 was the first time that the Youthmarket set up shop in this section of the Bronx, on 3rd Ave. between E. 148th and E. 149th Streets. The Youthmarket is part of a larger organization called GrowNYC, which helps make neighborhoods better by setting up farmers’ markets, community gardens, and recycling in the city.
Since opening in July 2012, the market has attracted a lot of attention from local residents who live in the area. Many people are excited that there is now a fresh produce market nearby.
When the wind shifts, the smell of cilantro floats across the sidewalk, calling attention to the bright red radishes, purple potatoes, and juicy plums. At the market, you can also buy red and green peppers, mushrooms, squash, and apples.
The food comes from nearby farms just outside the city limits. There is one whole table just for corn, which people buy in bulk, sometimes 10 or 15 ears at a time. Corn is the most popular item. The market sells 400 to 500 pounds of produce each Wednesday.
Ryan Morningstar, who helps run the Youth market, said that about 12 to 18 percent of the money they make comes from government assistance like food stamps. Food stamps help people buy food if they can’t afford it themselves. On its opening day, the market made $216.50 from food stamps alone, a record high for Grow NYC Youth markets across the city.
The Mott Haven market makes a total of around $700 a week. The market also accepts other government food assistance, such as the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program, which provides financial assistance and food allocations thus allowing low-income residents to get “fresh, unprepared, locally grown fruits and vegetables,” explains the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Services website.
Delphia Omborura, a hairstylist who works in the area, loves to shop at the farmer’s market in Mott Haven. On a Wednesday afternoon last September, she bought four bushels of large red beets to juice in a blender at home. She said that beets are more expensive in a regular grocery store.
Mamie Jackson also likes going to the farmer’s market. She said that she likes the fresh look of the produce at the market, which looks different from what the grocery stores sell. “I’d rather wash the dirt off a cucumber,” she said. “The ones at the grocery store are sprayed with a lot of stuff to make them look shiny.”

“The lettuce is not as fresh at the grocery store; that’s why I come here,” said Jennifer Gillette, a vegetarian, as she paid for four heads of lettuce.

Greysie Johnson’s four-year-old daughter loves apples and bananas, but until recently Johnson wasn’t using her government checks because she didn’t know what they were for. She said that she started getting the checks in the mail, but since she didn’t know what they were she didn’t use them.
Then she found out that the checks were like free coupons for her to buy fresh fruit and vegetables. She learned that once her daughter turns five years old, she will stop getting the checks. Johnson didn’t want the money to go to waste, so she started using the checks to buy fresh vegetables and fruit for her daughter.
“It’s an easier way to give her what she wants,” said Johnson. When the checks stop coming, though, she said she will go back to shopping at grocery stores, where the vegetables and fruit are not as fresh and healthy.

I first photographed Marilyn Monroe in 1960. I was 23 and not yet a very good photographer. By 1962, when Paris Match magazine asked me to shoot her again, I had won awards and was better – but I had a bigger ego, too.
She was filming what would be her last movie, Something’s Got to Give. I read the screenplay in advance, and discovered that in one scene she would jump into a swimming pool and then pretend to have no clothes on. I saw Marilyn before the shoot and she was upset that she was getting $100,000 for the movie while Elizabeth Taylor was getting more from the same studio. She said something like: “What would happen if I jumped in with a bathing suit on, and actually came out with nothing on ” Her press agent said: “You’re kidding.” She wasn’t. I was cocky in those days and said: “You’re already famous – now you’re going to make me famous.” “Photographers can always be replaced, Larry,” she said.
When she jumped into the water with her bathing suit on, I looked at her as if she were an athlete. My adrenaline was going. She was moving so quickly there wasn’t time to focus the camera, so I had to anticipate what she would do next. In a lot of my pictures of Marilyn, her body is always to one side, because I needed to have room for what she might do with the rest of the shot. This was always my favourite. I still get a little laugh inside me when I look at it.
When the shoot was over, I rang the magazine and it hit me: wow, she did it! I realised at the same moment how desperate she was. When she had nothing left, to prove that she could still get more publicity than anybody else, out came the birthday suit again.
Marilyn approved certain pictures, and they went all over the world. I had no ethical qualms about that; she could have changed her mind. But I had no sense of history and threw the rest away.
She was fired from the film and died several months later. I couldn’t believe it. I rushed to her house, then the mortuary and went into journalistic mode. I was there to capture events. A photographer owes it to history not to get emotionally involved. My 10-year-old daughter said of this picture, “It says everything but shows nothing.” Even a child could work out the innocence and desperation it captures.

Sri Lanka draws up healthy menu for monks
选自 BBC
Reports suggest increasing numbers of Buddhist monks are contracting diet-related diseases such as diabetes because of fatty, sugary gifts.
Traditionally monks do not cook and depend on donations given by devotees.
The BBC's Charles Haviland in Colombo says on some occasions monks are given five-course meals.
Although most food given to monks is vegetarian, officials are worried that it is not always healthy, he adds.
"Because of their great affinity towards religious observances, most devotees offer food with high cholesterol content and the Buddhist monks have no choice but to partake of these foods all year round," Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said, according to the Sri Lankan Daily Mirror.
"The situation is further aggravated because monks do not engage in recreational activities or exercises to shed their excessive weight."
He said the new menu was being drawn up on the instructions of medical experts and nutritionists.
They advise the monks to eat more fruit, vegetables and rice, to drink more water and to cut down on wheat-based foods.
The minister has also instructed health officials to open a ward exclusively for the clergy at all hospitals, the Daily Mirror reported.
However, prominent Buddhist monk Maadulaawe Sobitha dismissed the government initiative.
"For thousands of years, the tradition was for the devotees to offer food for the clergy. It was up to the monks to decide what is appropriate to consume," he told the BBC Sinhala Service.
"We have to be satisfied with whatever is given to us. We are not supposed to demand anything.
"The main problem is that there are many monks in rural areas who have no nourishment at all. They survive on meagre rations of some rice and green leaves. It will be much more useful to initiate a system to ensure that these poor monks have a square meal a day, than just wasting resources for political gain."
