You don't have to be old to be an inventor. Frank Epperson invented the Popsicle when he was just eleven years old. One winter day in 1905, after a day of play, he left his drink outside with the stirring stick (搅拌棒) still in it during the night. When Frank went out the next morning, he found his drink was frozen like an icicle (冻得像冰柱). Frank tasted it and found it was delicious.
When he grew up, Frank Epperson sold land and houses for a living. By 1921 he had to make a living for his wife and five children. But Frank never forgot the frozen treat that he had discovered. He decided to continue with it. He soon started a business—selling the frozen treats in seven flavours (口味). He named the ice on a stick “Epsicle”. His children didn't think that was a very good name. They called the frozen treat “Pop's ‘sicle’”. The name was later changed to “Popsicle”. In 1924 Frank got a patent (专利) for his frozen treat.
During the late 1920s and the 1930s the United States went through hard times. Many people lost their jobs. Twin ice pops (双棒棒冰) with two sticks were invented. They were just five cents and two kids could share them.
Today millions of Popsicles are sold every year. They come in thirty flavors. The most popular flavor is cherry. Now whenever we enjoy ice pops in summer, we have Frank Epperson to thank.

Crop circles (麦田怪圈) are strange patterns that appear mysteriously overnight in farmers' fields. The circles were mostly found in the United Kingdom but have spread to many countries around the world in the past years. The mystery has inspired (启发) many books, blogs, fan groups, researchers and even films.
Some people think that the first crop circles appeared near the small town of Tully, Australia. In 1966, a farmer said he saw a flying saucer (飞碟) rise up from a field and fly away. When he went closer, he saw a circular area.
In fact, the first real crop circles didn't appear until the 1970s. The number of circles increased dramatically (显著地) in the 1980s and 1990s.
In July 1996, one of the world's most complex (复杂的) crop circles appeared in England. It was called Julia Set. While some simple circles might be explained by strange weather, this one showed intelligence(智慧).
It was said that Julia Set appeared in less than an hour during the daytime and it made the circles more mysterious. If this was true, it would be impossible for people to create the circles. The circles became one of the most famous and important circles in history.
There are many opinions about what creates crop circles, including aliens, time travelers, wind and so on. But there is no good evidence (证据) for any of them. Perhaps one day, a mysterious, unknown source will be discovered by humans, but until then, perhaps crop circles are best thought of as the art of nature.
63. What are crop circles according to the passage
A.Huge rice fields.
B.Strange patterns in fields.
C.Big circles.
D.Strange fields.
64. Why does the writer say it was impossible for people to create Julia Set
A.Because the circles appeared quickly during the daytime.
B.Because people didn't have enough energy to create the circles.
C.Because people couldn't enter the places where the circles appeared.
D.Because the circles were too complex for people to create.
65. What can we learn from the passage
A.Some fan groups wrote some books about crop circles.
B.Crop circles have always been found by farmers.
C.There is no good evidence to explain how crop circles were created.
D.People will be unable to find out what created crop circles.
66. What is the best title for the passage
A.What Created Crop Circles
B.The Power of Weather
C.The Crop Circle Mystery
D.The History of Crop Circles

We moved to a beautiful two storey old house. The house was built in 1905. It was repaired in 1997.
At first, really small things began to happen. They didn't make me believe that something was wrong, but as time went on, things started becoming stranger and stranger. At first something was missing, and later would be found somewhere else.I just thought I had forgotten where I put it, or perhaps my daughter was playing around with things. Then later on I would hear strange sounds when nobody was at home but me... yet it was an old house, and sometimes an old house did make little noises, so again, I didn't really mind.

Most scientists agree the Great Sphinx of Giza (吉萨狮身人面像) was built around 2,500 B.C.But John Anthony West says that it's much older. If he's right, “everything anybody has learned about ancient civilizations (文明) would have to be completely revised,” he told a magazine.
West, a writer and film maker, first got interested in ancient history after studying the work of a French researcher. The researcher said Egyptian civilization could have developed as early as about 30,000 years ago, rather than about 4,500 years ago, as most experts believe.
West joined a scientific group to do research with them together.Their research suggested that the Sphinx had been worn down over the years by water, rather than by sand and wind.Wait a minute, Water How could that be The Sphinx is in the Sahara Desert, which has been dry for about 12,000 years! However, before that time, it was very green. If it's true that water wore down the Sphinx, West thinks that it must have been built centuries earlier.
Whether West is right or wrong, it's important to challenge accepted ideas. That's how science progresses.
West gave some advice to kids: If you are interested in a topic, read everything you can on it.Do your own research.Don't always believe everything your teachers tell you.Ask lots of questions, and find your own answers.

On the other side of the world from Stonehenge lies Easter Island.Easter Island is a small island in South Pacific Ocean that was formed by three volcanoes. Although the island was discovered on Easter Sunday in 1722 by Dutch(荷兰) explorers, some historians believe that other people had discovered the island as early as 300 B.C.
The explorers only stayed on Easter Island for a few hours, but they had time to notice Moai statues(摩艾石像) on the island.Historians agree that there may have been as many as 600 Moai statues at first, but at the time of the visit by the Dutch explorers, only 288 remained. When the English explorer Captain James Cook arrived on the island in 1774, most of the Moai statues had been knocked down. Many historians think the islanders had a war, and statues were destroyed during the fighting.
Moai statues are not the same but they all have a similar look: a long head, thin arms and long ears. They are in height from 6 to 32 feet and they weigh from 10 to 84 tons. That means the largest one weighs as much as 12 elephants.
Stonehenge and the Moai statues were built in different times and places but they shared many similarities. Both were made of stones. Many stones have fallen or been pushed down from both sites, but now each place is protected by people. And finally, both of them are tributes(致敬) to the people who made them. They used the simplest tools to amaze the world.
