阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Parents can cut the chances of their children getting fat simply by keeping them longer at table. Just three minutes extra at a family mealtime could help prevent child obesity. Research found that among poor families, the extra minutes at mealtimes made great improvement of a normal weight for the youth. The factors are likely to be communication and the importance of a scheduled mealtime.
Dr. Barbara Fiese said, “Children, whose families have a 20 minute meal over four times a week, weigh less than kids who leave the table after 15 to 17 minutes. Over time, those extra minutes per meal add up and become really powerful.” The researchers studied 200 family mealtimes, testing the effects of factors and mealtime behaviors of families with children in primary school. They found that families, who said that shared mealtimes were an important part of family life and had special meaning for them, were less likely to have an obese child. Similarly, families, who talked more together and interacted more positively during the meal, were more likely to have healthy weight children.
Teaching low income families how to make the most of family mealtimes was a wise idea. Dr. Fiese said, “This is something we can target and teach.” She added, “It’s also important to recognize the increasing differences of families and their sometimes complex living arrangements that may challenge their abilities to plan ahead and arrange a single time to communicate with each other.”
Families in poorer US neighborhoods faced a lot of problems, including poor access to healthy food. But even so, regular high quality family mealtimes made a difference to the children’s weight. Dr. Fiese said, “Three to four extra minutes per meal will make a healthy weight more possible.”
21.According to the passage, to have a healthy weight child, parents should ________.
A.limit the food for each meal
B.increase their eating time
C.shorten the mealtime
D.make them eat healthy food
22.How much time is reasonable for one meal according to the passage
A.About 15 minutes.
B.About 17 minutes.
C.About 20 minutes.
D.About 30 minutes.
23.Why does a longer mealtime make a difference to a normal weight
A.Because people can have a good rest as they eat meals.
B.Because people can have time to choose what they like.
C.Because people can use mealtimes to do other things.
D.Because people can communicate more in the scheduled time.
24.What does Dr. Fiese suggest to us
A.Parents should not communicate during mealtimes.
B.It’s better to add three to four extra minutes to one meal.
C.Four meals a day will make a difference to the children’s weight.
D.Twenty extra minutes per meal can make a healthy weight.
B
Why do Chinese people love hot pot so much?As the winter months are coming in, more and more people are sitting around a table enjoying this kind of traditional meal. I find myself wondering what it is about this traditional meal, which has existed for more than 1,000 years. What makes it a Chinese food favorite It seems that the answer lies beyond the dish itself.
Hot pot isn't just designed to keep you warm during the cold months; it's also a social experience. It's a “theater” cooked food that turns a meal into an event. There is a lot of fun for everyone to have in adding some foods to the hot pot.
Hot pot is eaten over two to three hours. For this reason, it is often considered an evening's entertainment, and a time to spend with friends and families. However, many Westerners would be put off by the idea of other people sticking chopsticks in their food. When we come to eat at the table in the UK,we often have our own shares, although the experience is still a social one.
A similar experience to the hot pot can be found in Korean barbecue restaurants, which let you cook your own meat. This allows people to have their meat done however they want.
For most Westerners, the idea of going to a restaurant to cook their own food is very strange. But having a go, I find it's now one of my favorite meals in Beijing. The steam from the pot left my clothes smelling of food when I got home, but perhaps this was also part of the experience. When the cold wind is blowing outside, I am sitting around with my good friends, eating and drinking. For me it's like a dinner party where my taste buds (味蕾) and my appetite are equally satisfied in the warm company of friends.
25.What is the main reason why hot pot is popular in China
A.It has a history of over 1,000 years.
B.It is a fun social experience.
C.It serves people with many kinds of foods.
D.It keeps people very warm in winter.
26.How long do people spend in enjoying the traditional meal
A.More than four hours. B.Over one hour.
C.About three hours. D.All the evening.
27.We can conclude from the article that British people generally ________.
A.enjoy cooking their own food in restaurants
B.prefer a Korean barbecue to Chinese hot pot
C.don't like sharing food with others in restaurants
D.don't mind the smell of food staying on their clothes
C
One Moore Elementary School teacher is showing students the importance of communication through “shout outs”.
The third grade teacher Lindsey Winders said a shout out is a compliment(称赞) that students can say or write down. “Like, ‘Hey, I noticed you doing a really great job solving your maths problems yesterday. I wanted to make sure you know that I saw you do that,’” Winders said.
Winders said she makes sure she is giving shout outs to her students every day. “I might write them a sticky note, or write them a quick little note in their planner. I might just say it to them on their way into the classroom or on their way out of the classroom. But most importantly, I try to do it every day,” Winders said.
In addition to the compliments, Winders has the students greet each other every morning during the morning meeting. She will have students give examples to the class of how to communicate in different settings(场景). A third grade student Nayelli Moranchel said she had given at least six shout outs this year. “It makes me happy, because they always write something back,” Moranchel said.
Recently, Winders took it one step further and wrote a personalised note on each of her students’desks. “In our classroom, sometimes it can be challenging for me to give a compliment or a shout out to each and every one of them in a way that is equal and valuable at the same time. So I decide that there is no better way than leaving a note on their desks that can stay for as long as they want it to,” Winders said.
Winders said it is encouraging when she sees her students copy the act and give each other compliments without her guidance.
28.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Giving a shout out.
B.Solving maths problems.
C.Teaching important lessons.
D.Writing down the names of students.
29.What is the best way that Winders finds to give her students compliments
A.Leaving a note on each student’s desk.
B.Praising them as long as they want it.
C.Explaining the value of compliments.
D.Giving them shout outs at the same time.
30.What can we infer about Winders’ way of praising students
A.It is very successful.
B.It is facing challenges.
C.It needs proper guidance.
D.It is copied by other teachers.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career__path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.
My uncle suggested that I do a work placement(实习) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make__a__decision. It seemed like a good idea.
I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel of how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy going work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but studying and training were difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving__home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus,__with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through(穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

(Text 9)
Welcome to the Guide Dog Training Center, boys and girls! First let me tell you something about guide dogs. One day, in 1918, a doctor and his pet dog were walking with a soldier who was blind. The doctor went into the hospital for a few minutes, and when he came out, he saw that his dog had safely guided the soldier to the other side of the hospital yard. That gave him the idea to start teaching dogs to guide people. Germany was the first country to start a program to teach dogs to be guides.
Dorothy, an American woman, went to Germany to find out more about the guide dogs. When she came back to the USA, she wrote about it in an American magazine. Soon more people became interested in the guide dogs, and training centers were started in America, too.
The best dogs for the job are clever and fit. It takes more than 2 years to train a dog to be a guide dog. When the dog is 14 months old and has learned many instructions, the owner and the dog meet for the first time. They practise together at the center for four weeks so the owner can get used to the dog.
Any questions OK, I’ll take you into the center now so you can see what we do.

W:No. I was just going to make some dumplings for our dinner. If you can’t go, then I’ll go.
M:Then what about dinner
W:I can make it after I get back. Oh, look. Two umbrellas are missing.
M:Now I remember! Jim and Tom took umbrellas with them when they left the house. They must have checked the weather.
