You either have it, or you don't—a sense of direction. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map while others can lose themselves in the next street
Scientists say we're all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory(理论) is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. The research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don't use it, we will lose it.
“Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around, ” says Jim Martland, research director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they will never develop the skill. ”
Jim Martland also emphasizes that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions:
If you are using a map, turn it to the way you are facing.
If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree—something easy to recognize(辨别出). Note landmarks(地标) on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.
The simple way of finding your direction is using streets in a town, streams, or wells in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note some landmarks such as tall buildings or hills which can help to find out where you are.
Now you will never get lost again!
44. Scientists believe that ________.
A. few babies are born with a sense of direction
B. people develop a sense of direction as they grow older

A. Gives special importance to something.
B. Expresses thanks to somebody.
C. Understands or realizes a fact.
D. Admires somebody.
46. What may be the best title of the passage
A. Research on Direction
B. The Sense of Direction
C. People's Ability of Finding the Way

“How are you?” is a nice question. It's a friendly greeting that people in the United States use. __51____ It's a question that often doesn't need an answer. The person who asks “How are you?” expects to hear the answer “Fine. ”, even if his friend isn't fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn't really a question and “Fine. ” isn't really an answer. __52____
Sometimes, people don't say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?”, the other person may be thinking, “No, I don't. I think you are wrong. ” It isn't polite to disagree very strongly, so he might say, “I am not so sure. ” __53____
Besides, people don't say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking to other people. For example, many conversations over the phone end when one person says, “I've got to go now. ” or when the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse such as “Someone is at the door. ” or “Something is burning on the stove. ” __54____ The person who wants to hang up simply doesn't want to talk any more, but it isn't polite to say so. An excuse is polite, and it doesn't hurt the other person's feelings.
Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an opinion, or ending a conversation, people often don't say exactly what they are thinking. __55____
A. This is a nice way to say that you don't agree with someone. B. It's very good not to tell the truth to our family. C. However, “How are you?” is also an unusual question. D. What does taking the train mean to you Perhaps it's just a way of getting to your destination. In fact, the train itself can be part of the fun.
On March 28th, China's first panda-themed tourist train left Chengdu in Sichuan for Zunyi in Guizhou. It soon became the talk of China with its special design and comfortable service.
Its inside and outside are decorated with giant panda pictures. Attendants (乘务员) carry panda toys and passengers can try panda-shaped food and Sichuan snacks. Some people call it a mobile star hotel because it has a bar, karaoke room, dance hall, and mahjong(麻将)room.
This luxury(高档的) service is one aspect that has attracted travelers. But train travel interests people for other reasons.
In the fast-paced times we live in, train travel is a good way to slow down. It gives you time and space to read, sleep, chat with friends, or simply do nothing but watch the changing scenery outside.
One surprising thing is that you might meet new people. Sheng Yawei, 26, once took the longest railway in the world—the Trans-Siberian Railway. Sheng met a Russian student and they became friends. “I also met a cute boy who gave me melon seeds(瓜子). Though we didn't understand each other's language, it made me feel nice. ”
