A video has been watched several million times on Facebook after being shared by the local police. It shows a 12 year old boy, Victor Martin, from Moche, Peru. He is doing his homework on the sidewalk (人行道), under a streetlight.
Staff at the Moche police station first noticed him late last month. While checking security cameras(监控摄像), they found a young boy sitting on the sidewalk by himself at night. At first, they thought he was doing something bad, but later they realized he was actually writing something in his notebook, taking advantage of (利用) the streetlight overhead. Touched by the boy's spirit, the police shared the video on Facebook.
The local TV station managed to find the boy and sat down with his mother to learn why he was doing his homework on the street instead of at home.
It turns out that the 12 year old boy's family was so poor that they didn't have enough money for electricity, so they just depended on a candle during the night. Unluckily, Victor Martin could seldom finish his homework before the sun went down, and recently he couldn't stand the weak candlelight any more.
“My son said one day he would be crazy if he continued with the candle and that he'd better go outside to finish his homework,” The boy's mother told Panamericana TV. She added that Victor's neck would often become hard to move because of tilting(倾斜) his head to let the candlelight through.
Although Victor does housework and takes care of the sheep every day, he takes school very seriously and gets good grades.
