重点 Use the “when/while” clause to narrate an event that you were late for or couldn’t go to. When the school basketball competition started, Kate was still making her way to school.

Step 1 Story chain Look at the pictures and guess what happened to John. Get the students to make up sentences with “when/while” according to the pictures on the screen. Students try to answer the teacher’s questions. Change the “when/while” clause into each other. Help to revise what they learnt in Section A .
Step 2 Presentation Teacher presents some pictures and narrates one of his past event that he was late for. Students listen, watch and learn. Help the students to foster necessary skills to join sentences together into a whole story.
Step 3 Activity 1a Get the students to think of a time when you were late for or couldn’t go to an event. Get the students to share his story with the class. Students tell his partner (then to the class) his story. A: What was the event B: What was the reason why you were late or couldn’t go Help the students to learn how to narrate a story in the order of events.
Step 4 Fast reading Teacher shows on the screen two questions and get the students to read the passage fast to find out the answers. Read the passage fast and answer the questions. Step 5 Listening Get the students to listen to Listening Cassette 1b and finish off the answers. Get the students to listen to the conversation again and put the events in the order they happened. Listen and write short answers to the questions. ① What event happened at the school yesterday ② Who missed the event ③ Which team won at the event 2. Listen and number the events(1-6) in the order they happened. To train Ss’ listening skills by listening for short answers. Step 6 Activity 1d Get the students to work in pairs and talk about why Kate missed the school basketball competition. Student A begins with a sentence with “while/when”, Student B completes the sentence. A: When the school basketball competition started… B: When the school basketball competition started, Kate was making her way to school. Help to deepen the concept of narrating in the order of time.
