Eight hundred years ago, a man in southern Turkey invented an amazing clock. It was more than 7 meters high. At its base(基座)was a life size model elephant. Every half hour, something amazing happened. The whole clock came alive: model birds, dragons, and people started to move.
The clock's inventor was an engineer named al Jazari. He lived in Turkey. Al Jazari was probably one of the greatest engineers in history. Some historians call him “the father of modern day engineering”. We know about al Jazari mostly from a book that he wrote. ________They include clocks and hand washing machines. The book also has drawings that show how each machine works.
Many everyday things today—from toys to car engines(发动机)still use al Jazari's ideas. Without his machines with moving parts, we might not have modern day robots.
Today, it is still possible to see what al Jazari's elephant clock looked like. A full size working model is in Dubai's Ibn Battuta Mall. There, every half hour, al Jazari's most amazing invention comes to life once again.
How Does the Elephant Clock Work
A bowl with a small hole floats(浮)in a water tank(水箱)inside the elephant's body. As the bowl slowly sinks, it pulls a rope that moves a human figure. His moving pen shows the number of minutes past the hour.
Every half hour, the water bowl becomes full and sinks completely. This causes a ball to fall from the top of the clock. The movement of the ball causes a phoenix to move and make a sound. The ball then drops out of a falcon's mouth into the mouth of a Chinese dragon. The weight of the ball causes the dragon's head to move down and the dragon's tail pulls the water bowl back up.
Finally, the ball drops out of the dragon's mouth and into a vase. As the ball lands in the vase, the elephant driver moves and makes a sound. The cycle begins again until there are no more balls in the top of the clock.

China is leading the world in facial recognition(人脸识别)algorithms(算法)with its best algorithm able to recognize 10 million people without a single mistake in less than a second.
The top five of the 39 facial recognition algorithms in the world come from China, according to the Face Recognition Vendor Test (FRVT) conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under the US Department of Commerce, which released the test results for 2018.
YITU Technology, a Shanghai based company that claimed both the top and second spot on the list, told the Global Times in a statement that its top algorithm can accurately recognize nearly every person in a sample base of 10 million.
“In comparison(比较), it is very likely for a human brain to make a mistake in recognizing the identities of 100 people，” the company said.
Algorithms from a Beijing based company SenseTime won the third and fourth spot, while the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT) claimed fifth in the test.
YITU said that high facial recognition accuracy means that users gain better experiences when using related products. For example, when a user uses facial ID for payment on a smartphone, the device will not allow the payment for someone else with a similar appearance as the user, the company noted.

I'm Li Hua. The person I admire most is my mother.
She is in her forties. She is a great mother and a good doctor. When I have trouble in my study, she always listens to my problems patiently. And she advises me how to solve them and encourages me to challenge these problems. And I always succeed in solving them. As a doctor, she often says she must be careful. She sets a good example for my study. She often works extra hours. She has devoted most of her time to her work. So I think she is not only a good mother but also a good doctor.
