The Eiffel Tower is very famous in France. It is visited by 7 million visitors a year. The Eiffel Tower was designed by Gustave Eiffel in the late 19th century. On Monday, March 31st, 2019, it turned 130.
The look of the Eiffel Tower is greatly loved by people today, but things were different when the design was first shown to the public. Many French artists thought that the design was ugly. However, Eiffel did not change a thing. He believed that once it was completed, people in Paris and visitors around the world would love the tower. He was certainly right.
The tower became popular with the public as soon as it opened on March 31st, 1889, two years after the construction began. Over 3, 000 people came to look at this new tower and even made the effort to climb the 1, 710 stairs to the top. The 984-foot-tall Chrysler Building in New York City beat it.
Today, the tower houses a number of restaurants on its first and second levels. The third level has been turned into a vast platform (平台). From there visitors can see the entire city of Paris. While visitors are allowed to take the stairs to the first two levels, the platform can only be got to by taking the elevators.
To ensure that the “Iron Lady” always looks good, the tower is cleaned and repainted every eight years. It’s an effort that takes a team of 25 workers, an entire year. If you travel to Paris one day, don’t miss it, the excellent achievement.

Trees are useful to man in three very important ways: they provide him with wood and other products; they give him shade; and they help to prevent droughts (干旱) and floods.
Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to draw quick profit from the trees, he has cut them down in large numbers.
Two thousand years ago, a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire. It gained the empire but, without its trees, its soil became bare and poor. When the empire fell to pieces, the country found itself faced with floods and starvation.
Even though a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult sometimes to make the people realize this. They cut down the trees but are too careless to plant and look after new trees. So unless the government has a good system of control, or can educate the people, the forests slowly disappear.
This does not only mean that there will be fewer trees. The results are even more serious: for where there are trees, their roots break the soil up, allowing the rain to sink in, and also bind the soil. This prevents the soil from being washed away. But where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away on the surface, and this causes floods and the rain carries away the rich top soil in which crops grow. When all the top soil is gone, nothing remains but worthless desert.

Last week after my motorcycle crashed on the freeway, I wanted only two simple things from technology: to call 911 and tell loved ones where I could be found. 36 When she opened Google Maps, she could see precisely where I was.
For years, tech companies have offered different ways for people to tell one another where they are. 37 If used carelessly, location tracking may hurt your privacy. But used thoughtfully, it can be a powerful and efficient communication tool. 38
When you make plans to meet friends somewhere like a movie theater, get in the habit of sharing your location for a short duration, like an hour. This way you can skip saying things like “I’m on my way” or “I’m running a few minutes behind” because people can simply follow you on the map.
39 Location sharing can be useful for being thoughtful (考虑周到的) of your partner’s time and space. For example, I am less likely to text my partner when I see she is at the office or driving on a freeway, but I will text when I see she is at the grocery store to ask her to pick something up.
Next time you plan an event at a large outdoor space, do your friends a favor. 40 Wandering around aimlessly in a crowded open space can be annoying.
A. Here are my suggestions for the best times to use it.
B. For safety reasons, avoid sharing your location publicly.
C. Use an app to share your current location so they can find you.
D. Consider sharing your location occasionally with your partner.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。 续写的词数应为150左右。
As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into groups. I wasn’t sure where I belonged. I found it hard to fit in.
Our teacher had assigned “secret friends” for the coming week. She wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw the paper into a glass; then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days. By the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. We left cards, pens and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend except me.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed there was a package. I opened the wrapping paper and inside was a box of powder(胭脂粉). The girls sitting near me laughed at the gift I had received. To make matters worse, the powder had already been opened.
I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls who had seen me open the powder started speaking ill of my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in. “How terrible!” I heard myself saying, “What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift My grandmother wouldn’t even want it. ” The girls laughed at my remarks and rushed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let the water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn’t normal for me to say mean things like that about someone.
Paragraph 1:
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth(厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face.

【参考答案】
Paragraph 1:
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth(厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face. She shouted at me with anger, “If you don’t want my gift you can just leave it instead of laughing at it. This is the best powder from my mum! ”Before I could say a word, Janet dashed out, leaving me dumb with deep regret. But soon I clenched my fingers and made up my mind to find Janet and say sorry to her. There she was, sitting in a tree shadow wiping her eyes.
Paragraph 2:
Along with my apologies, I explained the reason. I was not a mean girl by judging people’s presents. The reason why I complained in front of the girls was that I wanted to fit in, having a sense of belonging in the group. Hearing my sincere words, Janet calmed herself down after constant sobs and said, “True friendship comes from genuine care and love for each other. I think that’s our teacher’s intention of this ‘secret friends’ assignment. ” That day, I learned to cherish real friendship.

Vietnam aims to solve the relations between economic development and cultural preservation. Vietnamese cultural departments and activists have tried to preserve the historical and cultural relics in the country.
Vietnam now has more than 40, 000 historical relics. These relics of various forms and history are treasures for future generations. However, hundreds of the relics are severely damaged due to the negative influence of time, war and human activities. Head of Hanoi Relics Management Board, Nguyen Doan Tuan, says rescue work must preserve the relics’ soul, “We cannot replace ruined construction with new materials. Most relics have to rely on tourist fees for repair and rescue work. Director of Van Mieu Cultural and Science Center, Dang Kim Ngoc, says that the relics must be promoted widely to attract more visitors and bring in more income for repair and preservation, “We provide constant guide services for visitors so that they understand more about our relics. At the same time, a natural surrounding of the relic has been ensured, including the grass field and garden to improve its scenic value. ”
The local government agreed that the relics must be turned to the community for shared efforts in the preservation work. Director of Vietnam Revolution Museum Dang Quoc Quan, said that the community must be guided in the preservation and protection, “The UNESCO aims to let local community take part in the preservation of relics. We have seen limitations in the preservation of cultural relics, especially festival-related groups of buildings. This requires management and guidance by the government. ”
Nguyen Thi Minh Ly from the Department of Heritage says the community should be guided in proper behaviors towards relics, “This will ensure the protection of cultural relics in later generations. Creative restoration (修复) must be based on previous (先前的) values. ”

32. Trees are useful to man mainly in three ways, the most important of which is that they can _______.
A. keep him from the hot sunshine
B. protect him from droughts and floods
C. make him draw quick profit from them
D. enable him to build warships
33. It’s a great pity that _______.
A. man hasn’t realized the importance of trees to him
B. man is eager to profit from trees
C. man is only interested in building empires
D. man hasn’t found out that he has lost all trees
34. Sooner or later the forests will disappear _______.
A. unless a country has a plenty supply of trees
B. unless people stop cutting down their trees
C. unless the government punishes those who cut trees instead of planting them
D. unless all people are taught the importance of planting trees
35. The underlined word “bind” in Paragraph 5 means “_______”.
A. to wash away B. to make stay together
C. to make wet D. to improve

E. There are many ways for the third party to find out where we were.
F. Yet location tracking has caused disagreement for the last decade.
G. Before calling 911, I texted my partner who was already tracking my location with an app.
