Picture this: You ’re searching the Internet and come across a website with interesting articles. Some are news stories. Their goal is to share information. Others only look like news stories. They ’re actually advertisements, or ads. The goal of an ad is to get you to buy something. How do you, the reader, tell the difference between a news story and an ad
Back when I was growing up, it was easier. We got most of our information from newspapers. Big news stories appeared on the front page, and ads were boxed off and clearly labeled. But on the Internet, the two are often presented together. It can be hard to tell which is which.
That ’s why the research group I direct conducted a study. My research team showed kids like you the home page of a popular digital magazine. We asked them to tell us what was a news story and what was an ad. Most were great at identifying certain types of ads. “It has a coupon code, a big company logo, and the words limited time offer, ” one student wrote about an ad on the site. So where did kids get stumped
Some ads seem the same as real news stories. They have headlines and contain information. But they may also include the words sponsored content. Sponsored means “paid for, ” and content refers to the information in the story. “Sponsored content” is a way of saying that something is an ad. Most kids in our study, even if they used the Internet often, didn ’t know this.
Just because something sponsored doesn ’t necessarily mean it ’s false. It means someone paid money for it to panies pay so that readers will see their stories, buy their products, and like what the company stands for.
As a reader, you have a right to know who ’s behind the information you ’re consuming. So look for the phrase sponsored content. (And look carefully. Sometimes, it will be written in tiny letters. ) The Internet is a vast sea of information. To use it well, we not only have to know how to swim but also how to avoid the sharks. Learning to tell the difference between an ad and a news story is an important step to become Internet smart.
24. The purpose of the first paragraph is to .
A. tell the difference between a news story and an ad
B. criticize the websites for too many ads on them
C. show the writer ’s preference for newspapers
D. make readers interested and involved in what is going to be talked about
25. Sponsored content means .
A. the website gets paid for allowing something to appear on it
B. something is false
C. something isn ’t necessarily an ad
D. readers have to buy the products advertised on the website
26. What does “sharks” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Fierce sea animals.
B. Very bad people on the Internet.
C. Unwanted information.
D. Websites which contain ads.
27. Which is the best title
A. Watch Out for Traps on the Internet
B. Make the Most of the Internet
C. Be Internet Smart
D. Be Aware of Your Rights

Around this time a few years ago, it was common to see videos of friends on social media having a bucket of icy water thrown on them. Known as the “ice bucket challenge”, it was created as a way to raise money for the medical condition ALS. But now, there ’s a new challenge and this time, no water is involved.
What is it Well, think of a fruit that you ’d never normally sink your teeth into. Perhaps you ’ve got it: a lemon. While we enjoy using lemons to add flavor to dishes, very few of us would actually eat one as we ’d eat an apple or an orange.
But the horrible taste is the precise reason why the “lemon face challenge” is taking off. Participants bite into a lemon, taking a selfie as they do it before posting the photo online. The fun is all about expression people make as all that citric acid(柠檬酸)hits their taste buds(味蕾). Every expression seems to say, “This is worse than freezing water. ”
The serious side to this trend is the good cause it ’s all in aid of. The challenge aims to raise awareness of a rare brain cancer that affects young children. It was started by Aubreigh Nicholas, an 11-year-old US kid. She was diagnosed with this rare brain cancer herself in September 2017, but has since raised almost $50, 000 to cover her medical expenses thanks to the challenge.
If a challenge is going to raise publicity and contributions from people, it has to be something interesting and original. That way the ice bucket challenge took off in 2014 and it explains why so many people are now sharing their lemon faces. There are a lot of stories about the downside of social media these days. The charity challenges, however, show how online culture can unite the world and bring help to the people who most need it.
28. Why is the ice bucket challenge mentioned in the article
A. To show how charity gained its popularity online.
B. To introduce a similar challenge that raises money for charity.
C. To attract people ’s attention to a rare disease.
D. To prove its popularity around the world.
pared with the pre-Internet charity, what is the advantage of online charity
A. It raises more money than ever before.
B. It is started by the people who suffer rare diseases.
C. It brings people together easily and quickly.
D. It causes little doubt among people.
30. What does the underlined phrase “took off” in the last paragraph mean
A. Go away suddenly.
B. Become successful and popular.
C. Remove your clothes.
D. Take a break.
31. What is the author ’s attitude towards online charity
A. Positive. B. Indifferent.

We have recently heard some interesting ways that 5G technology might change our lives in the future. 5G promises Internet speeds between 50 to 100 times faster than 4G systems. Such improvements are sure to be popular with 5G users worldwide. While it is said to start only in some few areas of the United States this year, much of the rest of the world is not expected to receive this service until 2023.
One project in Britain, though, is already testing the super fast technology, but not on humans. Instead, the experimental subjects (实验对象) are unlike the group of Internet users — cows. The system connects the animals to 5G in an effort to automate (使自动化) the milking process.
The project was developed by American technology company Cisco Systems. Testing areas were set up at farms in three rural areas of England. The cows are equipped with 5G-connected devices that link up to a robotic milking system. The system uses sensors (传感器) and machine learning to fully automate the process.
System designers say technology takes over after a cow is ready to be milked and walks towards an automatic gate. The device is designed to recognize each cow. It then positions devices to the right body position for milking. During the process, machines offer food for the cow as a reward.
One of the test areas is in the town of Shepton Mallet in southwest England. There, about 50 of the farm ’s l80 cows are fitted with 5G smart collars (智能项圈) and ear sensors. Project officials say the devices do not harm the cows and the sensors help farmers immediately find any problems or health concerns.
Duncan Forbes, the project leader, told Reuters that so far, he thinks the project shows the farm ’s 180 cow operations can be greatly improved with 5G technology.
Forbes added that the experiment provides strong evidence that 5G technology can be widely used in the future “not just on farms, but in rural communities right across the country. ”
32. What do we know about 5G technology from the first two paragraphs
A. It has changed our lives.
B. It has more users than 4G.
C. It has not been widely used.
D. It is used on cows in the USA.
33. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The introduction of 5G devices.
B. The milking process with 5G technology.
C. The purpose of system designers.
D. The way machines provide cows with food.
34. Why are some cows fitted with ear sensors
A. To recognize every cow.
B. To judge the position of the cow.
C. To reduce the harm from devices.
D. To find health problems in cows.
35. What is Forbes ’ attitude to the future of 5G technology
A. Doubtful. B. Hopeful.
C. Disapproving. D. Uncaring.

“Today ’s test score will decide who has topped the class, so be ready, ” announced Miss Natasha in the classroom.
Miss Natasha got everyone ’s test papers, cleared her throat to announce the results and distributed the test papers among the students. Everyone was nervous about their scores that would be announced soon.
Ali and Bob have been competitors since class one and each year either one of the two came first in the class. This year, there was tough competition between both of them, and they eagerly awaited the results.
“Peter, 18, ” announced Miss Natasha as she handed him his paper, “Eric, 16, Ali, 20, Bob, 19. . . and lastly Alia, 15. ”
When Miss Natasha had distributed the test papers in class, everyone found out that Ali beat Bob by one mark and topped the class. Everyone congratulated him and Ali was happy as he accepted everyone ’s congratulations.
As Ali was about to put his paper in his bag, he noticed that by mistake Miss Natasha had given him two marks for an incorrect answer. He was shocked. He rechecked his answers and realized that all his answers were correct except for that one. Now if he informed Miss Natasha about it, he would not only lose two marks but also his first position.
Considering the situation, he remained quiet and went home. But all day he kept thinking about it. Should he or shouldn ’t he tell Miss Natasha about it He thought that it had been already done, and no one would notice if he didn ’t tell anyone, but then another thought crossed his mind. If he didn ’t tell the teacher about it and stayed the position-holder in class, he wouldn ’t rightfully take the position as it clearly belonged to Bob.
This situation put Ali in a hard position. His parents always taught him to do the right thing, but doing the right thing here meant he would lose his first position. He remembered how everyone cheered for him and congratulated him in class.
注意: 续写词数应为150 左右。
He knew that by informing the teacher about it, he would lose it all.

He puts on his personal stereo before he leaves the house and carries his cassette player on the bus to school.
“Last week I put my headphones on in the maths class, ” admits Steve. “The teacher was really annoyed. She took my headphones away and I couldn ’t use them for a week. It was terrible. ” At home Steve does his homework to music—loud music.
“My mother usually shouts, ‘Turn it down! ’” says Steve. “She can ’t understand how I can work with music on, but music helps me to fix my attention upon my studies. ” Steve would like to make music himself. “I ’m learning to play the guitar. Unluckily, it doesn ’t sound too good at the beginning. But I ’m going to keep practising! ”
For teenagers like Steve, music is a very important part of life. Music is social; it brings people together at discos, parties and concerts. Fast, light music is full of energy; it helps people to forget their problems and have fun. Music talks about love, freedom and imagination. There are always new songs and new styles.
Meanwhile Steve ’s mother agrees that music brings some problems. “Steve is a sensible boy, ” she says. “I don ’t think he would ever take drugs hearing rock. But I do worry about his hearing with all that loud music. And it drives me crazy! ”

Dear Harry,
I ’m glad to receive your letter. You ’ve asked me about the influence of Internet on the learning ways of our Chinese students. Now let me introduce it to you.
First of all, students are able to choose subjects on the Internet according to their levels, interests and needs. Then, they can just stay at home and study in a virtual-reality school. When they put on their 3D image glasses, they will feel as though they were actually in a classroom having lessons. Besides, after class, students can get their homework sent to them by the teacher according to their different performances.
In short, the Internet plays an important role in the new ways of learning.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

He knew that by informing the teacher about it, he would lose it all. As he fought with his thoughts, his mum asked him, “What ’s the matter ”“Mum, what if doing the right thing would mean you would lose something ”he asked in reply. “Son, if it is the right thing to do, then I am sure you will be rewarded for it. A wrong thing may seem attractive at first, but if it is wrong, it will hurt us someday, ” his mum said.
“My son, you are a brave and honest boy so just do what you think is right, ”his mum continued. The next day in class, Miss Natasha announced, “Today Ali has done what only a few of us would have the courage to do. He came to me and told me that I had mistakenly given him two marks and he was right about it, so the first position goes to Bob, not Ali. ” Everyone, even Bob, was surprised by this development. After the class, Bob asked Ali, “Why did you do that ”Ali simply replied, “Because it was the right thing to do. ”

“I can ’t survive without music, ” says fifteen-year-old Steve. In the morning, Steve wakes up to his favourite music radio station. He listens to rock on the radio while he eats his breakfast.
