It’s a real story happened in London. As one comes to some crossroads, he or she sees a sign which says that drivers have to stop when they come to the main road ahead. Maaseik, a city in Belgium, has opened an exhibition of about 200 relics and treasures of the Tang Dynasty (618 CE—907 CE), showing China’s golden age of ancient civilisation (文明).
The exhibition, which opened on May 11 and will continue until Oct. 20, is part of the city’s effort to create a centre of Chinese culture. Belgian Princess Mathilde formally announced the beginning of the exhibition, titled “China’s Golden Age: Treasures from the Tang Dynasty”.
The items, including gold plates and silver wares for royal families, Tang Dynasty tri-colour glazed figurines (小雕像) of women and paintings, have recently been on exhibit in the Dutch city of Assen.
All of the exhibited items are from Shaanxi Province, China. Its provincial capital Xi’an was one of the most populous (人口多的)cities in the world and once the capital of the Tang Dynasty.
The Tang period is generally regarded as a high point in Chinese civilisation—equal to, or better than that of the earlier Han Dynasty (202 BCE—220 CE), a golden age of Chinese culture.
Several years ago, said Dirk Verlaak, vice-mayor of Maaseik, his city and Assen teamed up to host history and culture exhibitions of China’s first two imperial dynasties, the Qin (221 BCE—206 BCE) and the Han. The Chinese relics and treasures attracted 350, 000 visitors in Assen and 190, 000 in Maaseik.

Each year thousands of Chinese tourists visit Cambridge, not to see the beauty of a great university, but to pay homage (敬意) to a poem — Xu Zhimo’s Farewell to Cambridge. 36 As one of the most famous romantic poets of Chinese literature, he is known for his promotion and contributions to modern Chinese poetry.
To honor him, in July 2008, a stone of white marble was set up at the back of King’s College, Cambridge (near the bridge over the River Cam). 37 It records the poet’s feelings of sorrow at departing from Cambridge where he had studied between 1920 and 1922. 38 He was also influenced by French romantic and symbolist poets at that time. The poem is his representative work, most frequently recited at shows. He was one of the first Chinese writers to successfully naturalize Western romantic forms into modern Chinese poetry.
39 It is a good embodiment (典型) of his lifelong devotion to exploring poetic qualities — poetic licence, creation and beauty. He creates a beautiful poetic imagery just like the fresh bridge, rainbow and cloud. In such imagery, poem can tell about its own aesthetic (美学的) feelings. 40

One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel . By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, “I’m going to find a better spot for us to camp, ” and walked away.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time . After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake . To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snow capped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
“Tom! ” she cried. “Help!”
No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling(滴落)somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake.
As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.

I noticed a young woman sitting next to me with a cell phone so I asked her if she spoke English and she replied “yes”. Would she please call our driver, I would pay for the call. I asked. “No problem, ” she replied and called both numbers but no one answered.
A Russian woman holding a sign with someone’s name on it, not ours, must have overheard this conversation and took the paper and called both numbers. Again, no one answered. She shrugged and sat down then her phone rang and in Russian she had a conversation.
Then she started to tell me about the call, but in Russian. I said, “No Russian, English ” She said, “No English. It’s a real story happened in London. As one comes to some crossroads, he or she sees a sign which says that drivers have to stop when they come to the main road ahead. At other crossroads, drivers have to go slow, but they do not actually have to stop unless, of course, there is something coming along the main road; and at still others, they do not have either to stop or to go slow, because they are themselves on the main road. Our story begins here.
Mr Williams, who was always a very careful driver, was driving home from work one evening when he came to a crossroad. It had a “SLOW” sign. He slowed down when he came to the main road, looked both ways to see that nothing was coming, and then drove across without stopping completely.
At once he heard a police whistle, so he pulled into the side of the road and stopped. A policeman walked over to him with a notebook and a pen in his hand and said, “You didn’t stop at that crossing. ”
“But the sign there doesn’t say ‘STOP’. ” answered Mr Williams, “It just says ‘SLOW’, and I did go slow. ”
The policeman looked around him, and a look of surprise came over his face. Then he put his notebook and pen away, scratched his head and said, “Well, I’m in the wrong street!”

With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time . After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake . To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snow capped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
