It has been four years since Grandma Joy told her grandson that she had never seen the most beautiful views of America. Since then, they have gone on many cross-country trips.
Brad Ryan had been feeling tired of studying in a vet school when he visited his 85-year-old grandma in 2015. He hoped that spending some quality family time would make him cheerful.
As he was telling his grandma stories of his travels, however, he was heartbroken to hear that she had never seen the ocean or mountains. Ryan then asked his grandmother if she would like to go hiking with him. Needless to say, she was more than happy to agree.
They have since visited 29 different national parks across America—from the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado to the Acadia National Park in Maine. Over the four years, Ryan and his grandma have driven 25, 000 miles through 38 states. And it has greatly affected his quality of life. “Seeing it through my grandmother’s eyes, who every morning wakes up and is thankful to be alive, has taught me how to live, ” Ryan said. “With her, I’ve had to slow down and see life in a different way, which has made it a lot richer. ”
“I love my grandma so much, and it’s just really giving me a lot of peace when she passed away. I can go back to these places, feel her spirit, and feel connected to her, ” he added.
Ryan posted all of their trips on Facebook. He hopes more young people will spare time to be with their elders. “I want young people to know that hanging out with your grandparents is cool. And there’s so much we can learn from our elders, ” Ryan said.

If you have ever been disappointed because you don’t have a good gardener, the clever robot may one day become the helper of your indoor plants.
The Hexa Plant is a six-legged robot that has been specially made to care for the potted (盆栽的) plant that it carries on top of its head. Using light and heat sensors (传感器), the robot has the ability to carry its plant in and out of the daylight. If the houseplant needs more sun, the Hexa will walk into the sunlight; and if the houseplant is getting too hot, the Hexa will go back into the area that blocks direct light. The Hexa Plant will even do a little dance when it senses that the plant needs to be watered to warn its owner.
The robot was developed by Vincross engineer and founder Sun Tianqi after he saw a dead sunflower sitting in the darkness in a room back in 2014. “Plants only receive an action without responding, ” Sun Tianqi wrote in a blog post. “Whether they are being cut, bitten, burned or pulled from the earth, or when they haven’t received enough sunshine, water, or are too hot or cold, they will hold still and take whatever is happening to them. ”
According to Sun Tianqi, for billions of years, plants have never experienced movement of any kind, not even the simplest movement. In their whole lives, they stick to where they were born. Sun Tianqi continued, “Do they want to break their own settings or have a tendency (趋向) towards this I do not know the answer, but I would love to try to share some of this human tendency and technology with plants. With the help of the robot, plants can experience the move. ”
The Hexa Plant model robots are not for sale, though Vincross does sell a Hexa robot model. It is said that in the near future the robots can open up a new market to watch over our household plants.
24. What can we learn about the Hexa Plant
A. It helps people do some gardening.
B. It waters the plants through dancing.

D. It carries the potted plant with its hands.
25. What does the author try to show through Paragraph 3
A. The way plants spend their whole lives.
B. The common way people deal with plants.
C. The difference between plants and humans.
D. The cause of making the indoor plants’ helper.
26. What does Sun Tianqi try to do using this technology
A. To develop gardening skills.
B. To draw people’s attention to plants.
C. To make plants experience move.
D. To study the living conditions of plants.
27. What can be the best title for the text

Smartphones, tablets and smart watches are banned (禁止) at school for all children under 15 in France. Under the ban students are not able to use their phones at all during school hours, including meal breaks.
“I think it’s a good thing. School is not about being on your phone, ” Paris mum Marie-Caroline Madeleine told AFP. “It’s hard with kids. You can’t control what they see and that’s one of the things that worry me as a parent. ”
There is no law like this in Australia, but some Australian schools have banned phones.
McKinnon Secondary School in Victoria introduced a total ban in February and Principal Pitsa Binnion said this has been a success.
McKinnon students still have a Chromebook to use in every class for day-to-day learning but they’re not allowed to use social media. Ms Binnion said at first “teachers cheered and students moaned (抱怨) , ” but now they’re seeing the advantages. “They come to school and they’re not allowed to use phones at all during the school day, including lunch breaks, ” she said.
“It’s been wonderful in terms of students communicating with each other at lunchtime and not looking at their screen, ” she said.
Ms Binnion also leads by example and doesn’t use her mobile phone in school. “I think anyone can do it if we’ve done it. ”
Not everyone agrees with the bans. Western Sydney University technology researcher Dr Joanne Orlando wrote in online magazine The Conversation earlier this year that Australia should not ban phones in schools because it’s important to educate kids to live in the age they are raised in.
“A good education for students today is knowing how to use technology to learn, communicate and work with ideas, ” she wrote. “Banning students from using smartphones is a 1950s response to a 2018 state-of-play. ”

第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Imagine that you are in a remote village somewhere with no medical clinic. 36 Once the doctors get to you, they examine you and take blood samples, but they won’t be able to help you until they take the samples back to the hospital to find out what is wrong. 37 Thanks to engineer Andy Ozcan, many people may never be in this situation. He has invented an app that turns your mobile phone into a diagnostic(诊断的)tool.
Ozcan’s invention is important because it is very accurate and easy to use. In many remote places, even if doctors have microscopes and other instruments to help them make diagnosis, there may still be other problems. Many doctors, for example, don’t have enough training to correctly interpret what they see. 38 With Ozcan’s mobile phone app, health workers can take a special photo of a blood sample and send it to a central computer at a hospital. The computer will then automatically interpret the photo and send a diagnosis back in a few minutes.
39 His technology only requires a mobile phone and an Internet connection. As more than four billion people already have cell phones, the cost of establishing the diagnostic system is fairly low.
By using existing technology—mobile phones—Ozcan has developed a medical tool that is both practical and economical. Therefore, it can be effectively almost everywhere. 40
A. Another reason that Ozcan’s invention is important is that it is inexpensive.
B. Even though you may only have a simple infection (感染), you might die because of the delay.
C. People are trying to reduce the costs of this new medical tool.
D. Ozcan’s simple, cost-effective tool might just save millions of lives around the world.
E. This tool has become much more popular all around the world.
F. You become very sick and must wait days until a mobile medical unit arrives to help.
G. As a result, they may diagnose illnesses incorrectly.

第二节(满分25分)
  阅读下面短文, 根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Confidence in public speaking is important because it allows you to take your focus off yourself and focus on the audience instead. This is possible by having a healthy attitude towards the audience. Unlike many speakers that wonder whether the audience like them, with confidence your focus will shift away from whether the audience like you and move towards building a harmonious relationship from the moment you step on stage.
Many speakers have a blank mind on stage because they have so many competing thoughts which make them upset about the result and the response of the audience. Being confident means you can think straight and manage your thoughts effectively. Getting rid of distracting thoughts allows you to concentrate on delivering the message.
Speakers that lack confidence often say something that is not linked to the story and use complex language, so their message can make the audience puzzled. Confident speakers send a message which is relevant, simple and honest and they use personal stories to build a connection. The message is what the audience need or want to hear about and not just simply what they want to speak about. Speakers should keep in mind that they should prepare a message which is full of content designed for the audience instead of content designed to make them unable to understand.
There is no doubt that confidence is important. If a speaker has confidence, the audience in most cases respond positively to him or her. A speaker lacking in confidence may attempt to mask it in many ways, only to result in being treated as an arrogant(自大的)person. The audience are left questioning the speaker’s motivation for being on stage in the first place. A confident speaker is less likely to have the unknown factors.

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!”
“No, ” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with(插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into mischief. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me. ”
“You are a coward, and afraid to go, ” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.
Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.

The Huawei Watch is a smart watch for Android Wear. The watch was first announced on March 1st, 2015 at the Mobile World Congress, and officially released in Berlin on September 2nd, 2015. Although it looks more like a traditional watch than a smart watch, it has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and supports Google Now voice commands. It also has a heart rate monitor, 4GB of storage, and more than 4, 000 apps to choose from in the Google Play Store. It can also receive texts and emails, as well as make and receive calls.

Paragraph 1:
Robert was fast sinking. It seemed as if Robert would be drowned. Just at the moment, Henry happened to pass by. Hearing the screams, Henry ran to the riverside, threw off his clothes and jumped into the water without hesitation. He reached Robert just as he was sinking the last time. By great effort, and with much danger to himself, he brought Robert to the shore.
Paragraph 2:
Thus, Robert’s life was saved. Robert and his new friends were ashamed at having called Henry a coward. They realized that Henry had true courage. They said sorry to Henry for their rude behavior and asked for his forgiveness. Henry forgave them happily. He and Robert were friends again and they went home together as usual. From this, Robert learned what true courage was: never be afraid to do good, but always fear to do evil.
