Everybody can suffer from stress(压力). No matter what your age is, you can feel stressed out by things that are happening in your life. Teenagers, however, have many more opportunities(机会) to get stressed than people in any other age group. Being a teenager is hard. You are not a child any more, but you are not an adult, even though you have to deal with some very grown-up problems and decisions. Families can be one of the biggest causes of stress, such as problems with parents arguing at home,or problems with brothers and sisters. Teenagers also have a lot of stress from school, either from their teachers or from their friends. Some teenagers also feel stressed about choosing their education after high school. Getting a place at university can be very difficult and some cannot afford to go to university. The stress about getting a job when finishing school is hard for some teenagers. There are so many young people finishing school and not enough jobs for them. Sadly, there is nothing we can do to remove these causes of stress from the 1ives of teenagers, but you can learn the best way to deal with it. Talking to people is one of the best ways to deal with stress. It may sound simple, but it is true. A problem shared is a problem halved(减半).
( )6. Why is being a teenager often difficult?
A. Because even though you are not an adult, you must deal with adult problems.

Arguing with your parents is very natural for teens. From your hairstyle to your friends, your marks at school to your television habits, it might just seem like you argue with your parents about everything. Though this is not pleasant, it is normal and it will most possibly pass. At the same time, remember to argue fairly, respectfully(尊重地) and argue only when needed. It might be hard to stay in control while arguing with parents, but it will do you a lot of good.
Arguments between teens and parents generally come about when both parties believe that they know what is best. Parents have been caring for their teens for over ten years, but teens are quickly becoming adults and believe that they are able to take care of themselves. If you are a teen arguing with your parents, remember that your parents love you and only want what is best for you. If you must argue with them, argue fairly, respectfully by:
▲Letting each person in the argument to speak what they want to say.
▲Refusing to break in others when they are speaking.
▲Only Arguing about the topic at hand. Don’t talk about past hurts.
▲Showing your parents that you have thought about the issue(事情) and are trying to sort things for yourself.
There is a small difference between having a discussion and an argument, but smart teens know that having a discussion with their parents will make things easier.
Arguing with parents is usually a hallmark(标记) of the teenaged years, but out of control arguments don’t serve anyone well. Before arguing with your parents, decide what type of teen you want to be and what you are willing to do in order to achieve your goals.
( )11.Why do teens argue with their parents according to the writer?
A. Parents and teens have different ideas of what is best.
B. Parents don’t want their children to grow up.
C. Teens don’t need their parents’ care any more.
D. They have different habits.
( )12.When arguing with parents, teens should do the following EXCEPT__________.
A. Let both sides tell what they want to say.
B. Show your parents that you have considered the things carefully.
C. Keep yourself in control.
D. Tell your parents that they have often hurt you before.
( )13. The underlined word “sort” probably means _____________

I will always remember my mother’s last few days in this world.
On February 14th, 2000, my class went on a field trip to the beach. I had so much fun. When we returned to school, my teacher told me to go to the headmaster’s office. When I got into the office, I saw a police office. Suddenly I realized something was wrong. The police office told me what had happened and we went to pick my sister up. After that, we went to the hospital and waited. Time went slowly. Finally, we got to see our mother. It was terrible.
On the next day, the headmaster came and told my two teachers what had happened. I was taking a rest that day. I knew it had something to do with my mother. I kept thinking that she either died or had gotten better. How I wished that she had gotten better. When my teacher took me outside, my sister ran up to me. She started crying, “She’s gone. I knew I had to say goodbye.
Today when I look back, I still miss my mother very much, but I know that I will live. My mother was a strong mother, who had the biggest heart. My mother was an angel walking on the earth. I will always remember her as living. When someone is asked who their hero(英雄) is, they usually say someone famous, like Michael Jordan or Britney Spears. You have often looked into a mirror, of course. But you haven’t seen the real picture of your face yet. And why couldn’t you see it? When you look into a mirror, you don’t see your face as other people see it. You see a reversed picture. If you close your left eye, your picture closes its right eye. If you touch your right ear with your right hand, your picture touches its left ear with its left hand.
If you have two small mirrors, you can see your faces as your friends see it. You hold the two mirrors at right angles(角度) to each other and look into them. After some practice you will be able to see the real picture of your face.
Now close your left eye and your picture closes its left eye too. Touch your right ear with your right hand and your picture touches its right ear with its right hand! A good memory is a great help in learning a language. Everybody learns his own language by remembering what he hears when he is a small child, and some children -like boys and girls who live abroad with their parents-seem to learn two languages almost as easily as one. In school it is not easy to learn a second language because the pupils have so little time for it, and they are busy with other subjects, too.
Our mind is rather like a camera, but it takes photos not only of what we see but of what we feel, hear, smell and taste. When we take a real photo with a camera, there is much to do before the photo is finished and ready to show to our friends. In the same way there is much work to be done before we can keep a picture forever (永远)in our mind.

The world is not only hungry, it will also be thirsty for water. About 97% of water on the earth is sea water, or salt water. Man can only drink or use the other 3%of the fresh water (淡水)which comes from rivers, lakes and underground. On the other hand, because the number of people in the world is becoming larger and larger, more and more fresh water is needed. So water shortage becomes a big problem.
How can we work out this problem? Scientists have found some ways to turn salt water into fresh water. One important way is to boil (使达到沸点)sea water with high heat until vapor (蒸汽)rises, leaving the salt. In this way, a lot of fresh water can be made quickly.

Today there are 6 billion people on the earth. By the year 2050 there may be 12.5 billion. This is a lot of people to feed. We need more food.
One way to produce more food is by growing stronger plants. For thousands of years, farmers have made plants better. Every season, they pick the best plants for the next season. It works very slowly. Since 1983, scientists have been able to change plants more quickly by changing their genetic material (遗传物质). Foods from plants grown in this way are called genetically modified foods (转基因食品), or GM foods.
By changing the genetic material of a plant, it is possible to make new plants. They make plants which are strong against plant diseases. They can also help in our diseases: a kind of rice is being prepared (准备), for example, which stops people from becoming blind.
Rich countries produce GM foods because they are easy to grow and bring in more money. Poor countries are interested in them because they help produce more food.
GM plants are not natural. No one knows how good or bad they are. Making GM foods is only one way of feeding people in 2050. There are strong feelings against them, because they are unnatural. They may feed people, then hurt them or their children later. But, both rich and poor countries are very interested in their use, and they are not going to go away. In 2050 we may think differently about them.

Happiness is for everyone. You don't need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time.
In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something worng, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice them, you can see that happiness is always around you.
Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can't be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving(旋转 ) door. . When it closes, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person.

Years ago, I lived in a building in a large city. The building next door was only a few feet away from mine. There was a woman who lived there, whom I had never met, yet I could see her seated by her window each afternoon, sewing or reading.
After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself, "I wonder why that woman doesn't wash her window. It really looks terrible."
One bright morning I decided to clean my flat, including washing the window on the inside.
Late in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was clearly visible. Her window was clean!
Then it dawned on me. I had been criticizing (批评) her dirty window, but all the time I was watching hers through my own dirty window.
That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings?
Since then, whenever I wanted to judge (评判) someone, I asked myself first, "Am I looking at him through my own dirty window?"
Then I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see the world about me more clearly.

My father woke me up early one summer morning when I was fourteen and announced (宣布): "Get up, you're going with me to cut the grass in the garden. "
The idea that my father thought I was old enough to help him in his business made me feel proud and excited. From sunup to sundown, my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large garden. By the end of the day I was too tired to say a word but I felt good. This was my first time to help my father in his business. I got $ 6 for my work that day.
One day my father found some leaves I had missed and pulled me aside. "Take away these leaves!"he said, "and don't make me have to tell you to do it again. " The message was clear. Today I value(珍视) the importance of doing a job well the first time. It will never fail to impress(给……留下印象) the person you are working for.
After two years, my father told me and my brother that he felt we were old enough to cut the grass by ourselves. Every Saturday during my last two years of high school, we set off early in the morning with the same strong wish we had gained while working under our father.
Looking after the garden was neither exciting nor high-paying, but that didn't matter. It taught me that any job was a good job and that whatever I was paid was more than I had before.
A newspaper reporter once asked me how someone could possibly live with hard work and low pay. "If you're only thinking about hard work and money, you probably don't want to do any better than you are doing," I answered. In every job, from cutting the grass to washing dishes, I've learned much. I've learned something that helps me in my next job.
If you work hard enough, you can learn from any job you do.

Napoga is a 12-year-old girl in Ghana(加纳), Africa. It is hard for her family to get clean water. Every morning, she leaves home at half past five to get clean water for her family in a village far away. It takes her six hours to get enough clean water for daily cooking and drinking. She has no time to go to school or to play with her friends. Millions of people in the world are like Napoga. They can’t get enough clean water to keep healthy.
Earth Day is April 22. But on all other days, we must also remember it. The water we use is the most important natural resource on the earth.
Water covers 70% of the earth’s surface(表面). But most of that is sea water. We can’t use it for very many things. Fresh water covers only 1% of the earth’s surface. You probably feel lucky that your life isn’t as hard as Napoga’s. But that doesn’t mean you don’t have to worry about water. We all face serious water problems. One of them is water pollution. All kinds of things from cars, factories, farms and homes make our rivers, lakes, and oceans dirty. Polluted water is very bad for people to drink. And dirty water is bad for fish, too. Now, 34% of all kinds of fish are dying out.
How do cars and factories make our water dirty? First, they pollute the air. Then, when it rains, the rain water comes down and makes our drinking water dirty. Dirty rain called acid rain(酸雨), is also bad for plants, animals and buildings.
Scientists say that in 30 years, more than half of the people in the world won’t have enough clean water. We have to learn how to save more water for ourselves and our children. Here is some advice for saving water:
●Turn off the water while you brush your teeth. You can save as much as 450 liters(升) each month.
●Leaky taps(漏水的龙头) waste a lot of water. Fix them right away!
●You can easily cut your 10-minute showers(沐浴) in half—and you’ll be just as clean.
●When you wash dishes, don’t let the water run.
●Only wash clothes when you have a lot to wash. If your washing machine isn’t full, you’re wasting water!

It’s important to learn about protecting our environment . Here is a 5R rule for us:
①Reduce
If you want to reduce waste , you should use things wisely . Millions of trees are being cut down to make paper . If everyone uses a little paper carelessly and throws it out , soon we would not have any trees left . Other things are also being wasted , and people don’t know what to do with the waste in big cities . So it is necessary to reduce the waste .
②Reuse
You should always think of reusing the usable(可用) things before throwing them out . Give your clothes you do not use or the ones which are too small to the poor . Within a family , you may pass on such clothes to younger brothers or sisters .
③Recycle
Bottles , cans and paper can easily be recycled . By doing so we save lots of time and money . For example , coke cans are sent to a factory , where they are smashed flat and melted and the metal things are made for new coke cans .
④Recover
When you buy a box of apples , there may be a few rotten(腐烂)apples , you have two choices: one is to throw the whole apples away , or you could cut off the rotten parts and use the good parts . In this way , you recover the eatable parts of food .
⑤Repair
If one of the legs of your table is broken , you can repair it instead of throwing the table away . If you want to change for better ones , it is better for you to sell the old things or give them to other people who can use them after doing some repair . It is true that North America is a “throw-away” society , but the time has come to change our way of life so that we can protect our environment . Every one of us should try our best .
( )11.Which of the following is true ?
A.We’ll have no resources of nature unless we can deal with the waste .
B.Recycling is the best way to save resources .
C.If we waste less , we can save more resources of nature .
D.More things are wasted in developed countries than in de-veloping countries
( )12.The “Reuse” rule mainly requires us .
A.not to throw away our things B.to make full use of our things
C.to use our things again and again D.to give our things to those who want them
( )13. can be recycled .
A.Few soft things B.Only hard things
C.Many things D.All things
( )14.We can infer(猜想) that the writer of this passage may live in .
A.China B.Japan C.Australia D.America
( )15.The “Recover” rule mainly requires us .
A.to get back the useful parts B.to cover waste things with earth

There’re many rich people in this part of the country because gold was once found here. I was only a small child at the time but I can remember everything well.
Men came from everywhere to look for gold. They bought all the ground near the banks of the river. They made big holes in it, trying to find more gold. Some men found a lot, others found none at all.
Peter Fullerton was one of those who came to find gold. He bought nearly the last piece of ground. It was a long way from the river so no one else wanted to buy it. But Peter paid all his money for it. He worked hard month after month until the ground was full of holes. But Peter found nothing.
Then one night, just before he was going to leave, it began to rain. It rained for three days and three nights. When at last the rain stopped, Peter came out of his small wooden house and looked at his piece of ground. It didn’t look the same now. The holes were not there any more. But everywhere there were small plants.
“There may be no gold here,” Peter said, “but this ground is rich. I can grow things here. I can grow flowers and I can sell them. The women in this town have money now. They have beautiful houses and they will want to put flowers in their houses. If I can grow good flowers here, I will make money, too.” So he did. And soon his piece of ground was covered with beautiful flowers. Later he was able to buy more fields until he owned all the ground near the river.

How much living space does a person need? What happens when his space is too small? Scientists are doing experiments on rats to try to determine(测定)the effects of overcrowded conditions on man. Is human blood all the same? “Yes.” You may say. “It’s all red.”
Well, it’s not as simple as you might think.
Blood is made up of different parts, such as red blood cells (红血球), white blood cells and platelets (血小板).
Two chemical molecules (分子) on the red blood cells make people’s blood different. Scientists mark one molecule “A” and the other molecule “B”. According to which and how many molecules are on the red cell, scientists divide blood into four types: A, B, AB and O.
Your blood type will stay the same all your life.
Scientists have been wondering if there are some links (联系) between people’s blood types and their personalities, but they don’t know for sure yet.
But some say that people with the same blood type may have things in common.
What’s your blood type? Do you have family members or friends who are of the same type as you? Read the following.
People with type A: They look peaceful from the outside. But they ask too much of themselves that they may be very nervous inside. They get happy or sad easily. Sometimes they are shy but always very careful. They can easily win people’s trust.
People with type B: They have strong minds. Once they start a task, they don’t give up easily. They’ll try their best to finish it and do it well. Type B people always try to make themselves different from others. They want to do things in their own way.
People with type AB: They are maybe the strangest among al blood types. They can be both open and shy., noisy and quiet at the same time! They are responsible and always ready to help others.
