On Feb 12, Dalian (not his real name) was taking a train to Changsha, Hunan, for a business trip. While on the train, he went into a carriage(车厢) to have lunch and chose to remain in the carriage. He didn’t know that the carriage was only for people heading to Wuhan.
Several hours later, when the train arrived in Wuhan, Dalian was asked to get off, as he was in the special carriage. Although he was surprised, he didn’t want to cause trouble and got off the carriage with just a single bag.
Because of the epidemic, Wuhan had been locked down. So Dalian couldn’t find a hotel to stay in. Feeling at a loss, he saw a notice online looking for volunteers to work in hospitals. Dalian decided to give it a try.
He soon became a volunteer in Wuhan No.1 Hospital. He was responsible for(对……负责) taking out rubbish, sweeping the floor, disinfecting(消毒) the hospital, dealing with used protective suits(防护服) and bringing meals to patients.
The young man, reportedly from northeast China, had to work 12 hours every day, changing his protective suit three times a day. While working, he couldn’t drink anything or go to the bathroom. He also had to have close contact with infected patients, which is risky(冒风险的).
Dalian was afraid of getting infected at first. “When I entered the wards(病房), I was kind of frozen(僵硬的) and felt like I couldn’t move,” he said. But after he saw more patients get better, his fear gradually went away.

Chip was in the first grade when I arrived at his school as a counselor(辅导员). It was shocking to me that he was described as an angry, uncontrollable and evil(道德败坏的) boy. How could such a little boy, after being in school only one year, be considered “evil” Over the next several months, I came to know Chin well enough to see that he was neither evil nor uncontrollable.
But, one day, Chip threw a chair at his teacher and was sent to my office. I asked him what made him do this. He replied that his teacher hated him. He felt there was no way to ever get her to like him. I asked him if he would tell his teacher this. He nodded, and we called her into my office.

One can hardly imagine Chai Huilong, wearing glasses and a T-shirt, as a Chinese chive(韭菜) farmer.
Two years ago, Chai graduated from Tianjin College of University of Science and Technology. He took over his parents’ 20,000 square meter plot of land and set up a business: growing Chinese chives.
But instead of growing Chinese chives in the traditional way, Chai plants them in garden pots and sells them directly to customers through an online store. Now his family makes 10 million yuan a year.
Running a business is a dream for many young graduates. Chai is one of those young graduates who have found great career opportunities in rural areas. They make good use of their agricultural knowledge and new skills, and get support from the government.
When Chai came up with the idea of growing Chinese chives, he was not sure about running his own business. But Youth Business China, a non-profit(非盈利的) program supported by the government which helps encourage youth entrepreneurship(创业精神), gave Chai courage and confidence. The program offers 30,000 to 50,000yuan in start-up funding to young people who have great ideas. It also assigns(分配)each of them a tutor who provides guidance on spending the money and running the company.

Three COVID-19 vaccines(疫苗) have entered phase II clinical trials(临床试验) in Beijing, said a health official on Sunday.
Xu Qiang, head of the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, said that Beijing has arranged 21 science and technology projects in response to the novel coronavirus epidemic. Five innovative drugs have been approved(批准) for clinical trials, and all of them have entered phase II clinical studies, he said at a routine press conference on COVID-19 prevention and control.
Shanghai schools
Shanghai’s public kindergartens will reopen on June 2, also first, second and third-graders of elementary schools in the city will return to school on the same day as the epidemic(传染病) wanes.
The junior students can choose to continue their online education at home if necessary, which will last till the end of this semester. From June 2, private kindergartens in Shanghai can decide their own time to resume classes after getting approval.
Online learning
Chinese high school students have the most positive attitude toward online learning compared with those in the United States, Japan and the Republic of Korea, a report released by China Youth Daily has found.
The report showed that most of the surveyed students in the four countries embrace online learning. A total of 87.1 percent of Chinese students said “online learning is important,” while 91.2 percent found “online learning is interesting,” higher than that of any of the other three countries. More than 94 percent of Chinese high school students believe online learning can expand(扩大) their scope of knowledge, while 86.8 percent believe they can learn from first-class teachers via the Internet, according to the report.
