What will the future school look like is difficult to make clear, but most experts(专家) agree that the school will be electronic in the future.
“Present-day schools will no longer exist in the next century,” says a report in The Age. “At that time, future schools will become community-style centers, which run seven days a week, 24 hours a day.” At the same time, computers will surely become a central part of the school in the future.
According to The Age, the distant learning will be popular and students will listen to teachers on computers. Going into classrooms on their computers, students will study at any time, which is very easy for them. However, it is necessary for students to go to the actual school in order to develop some social skills.
The Seashore Primary School is an imaginary school in the future created by the Education Department of Australia. At this school, all the teachers and students have laptop computers. Teachers check messages and call students back on a special telephone system and students use telephones to search for information or speak to their experts who teach their lessons. Besides, all the lessons are related to all sorts of subjects and all the students have their own learning plans created by teachers.
As one headmaster says, a laptop computer is students' library, data storage(数据存储)as well as the bridge to a wider world. Technology has changed the emphasis of future learning. Thus, we'll pay more attention to the learning of kids rather than the teaching.

When I was a child, I dreamed of becoming many things. Sometimes, I wished I was an astronaut going up into space, finding new planets and jumping around in a cool space suit. Other times, I imagined being a cowboy in the Wild West, wearing stylish cowboy boots. On other occasions, I pretended to be a famous footballer, using my skills to score lots of goals for my team.
Looking back, I realize that imagination is a wonderful thing. I was able to create entire environments and scenarios in my head, using nothing more than my brain, and to be able to adapt things in my everyday surroundings to fit the specific story of the day. Growing up with siblings (兄弟姐妹) also helped, as it meant that even bigger stories could be created, combining our ideas and putting our thoughts into action. It also allowed for more varieties in the stories, as sometimes I could be the hero while on other occasions, I would be the bad guy.
One of my all-time favorite memories as a kid was playing in my back garden. I played the role of Indiana Jones, which cleaned up at the cinema at that time, with my younger sister as my assistant and my brother as a bad person. We used everything in our garden, from the path to the fence, as part of the storyline to create obstacles that needed to be overcome, and we would keep the story going for hours!
My personal favorite game was Indiana Jones and the Stolen Easter Eggs, where my brother hid small chocolate eggs around the garden and my sister and I had to find them by answering questions or solving a puzzle. It was difficult, but eventually we found all the eggs and shared them together.
Since then, I have seen many great things and met many amazing people. The elements of fun and varieties of my creative imaginations are what I try to bring into every part of my positive life. So I can enjoy sharing with and hearing about other people’s stories, too.

Before the end of the year, employees at Ubiquitous Energy, a company in Redwood City, Calif, will gather in a window-lined conference room to stare toward the future. That’s because their new glass windows will offer more than an amazing view of the North California landscape. They will also be able to power the company’s lights, computers and air conditioners.
Several years in the making, Ubiquitous’ energy-producing glass is a remarkable technological achievement. Its power lies in the layers of organic polymers (聚合物) between sheets of glass. As light enters the window, the flow of electrons between the polymer layers creates an electric current, which is then collected by tiny wires in the glass.
“It’s sort of like a transparent computer display run in reverse (反过来),” says Veeral Hardev, director of business development at Ubiquitous Energy. “Instead of electricity being shuttled to different points in a display to light them up, light is producing electricity to be shuttled out of different points in the window.”
Right now the windows produce about a third as much electricity from a given amount of sunlight as the typical solar cells used in roof panels (板).These windows, about half as transparent as ordinary glass, don’t work as well as transparent ones. Hardev says the company is likely to improve the transparency significantly. As for the lower output of electricity, he notes that windows can cover a much greater surface area than a roof, so numerous windows will produce a surprisingly larger amount of electricity than the production from a rooftop full of higher-efficiency solar panels. “You could do both.” says Hardev. “But you’ll get more from the windows. The biggest challenge, he adds, is increasing the windows from less than two square feet currently to about 50 square feet.”
9. What makes the new glass windows special
A. They can offer an amazing view.
B. They are controlled by computers.
C. They can power the conference room.
D. They can help stare toward the future.
10. What can affect power production according to the passage
A. The transparency of the glass.
B. The quality of the rooftop.
C. The height of the solar panels.
D. The thickness of the glass.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. Windows: A New Challenge of Technology
B. Windows: No Longer Just for Letting in the Light
C. Power: A Pressing Problem in the Near Future
D. Power: Not Enough from Rooftop Solar Panels

Throughout history it has been the individualists, like Henry Ford and Rosa Parks, who have led nations, formed common groups, and made the greatest influence. However, people, such as the author, Michael Walzer, of Multiculturalism and Individualism, condemn the independent person as an unreliable and empty creature. This criticism of the socially unlimited human is the fearful reaction to the power that these individuals can possess. Nevertheless, strong individuals form the foundation of the world progress in technological and social fields because of their willingness to question and create.
Individualists have always been more involved with technological advances than the communitarian (社群主义者). It has been the person, unstopped by other people’s familiar opinion that has given the most creative and helpful of inventions. A brief look into history reveals names such as Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and, more recently, Bill Gates who have improved and contributed to the comfort of humanity. These individuals were often criticized for their self-interest work, but when the products of their imagination changed the lives of humans around the world the dissatisfied voices quieted.
Individualists are more socially persuasive than the faceless members of self-interest groups. History disclosed the fact that it is the individual that empowers the people. I ask you, what are ten important interest groups that had a positive influence on America in the nineteenth century This is a difficult question. However, if the words interest groups are replaced with individuals, the answer would be ly easy. Michael Walzer claims that individuals are just trash floating aimlessly away from every creative center. But, it is the strange individualists who have the power to create the groups and the fact is that every group is a product of individualists. So by arguing for wiping out individualistic thought a group is actually cutting their own lifeline.
Individualists are the largest and most important contributors to society. The fear of change doesn’t change that fact. Society has always condemned the different, strange, and unusual person when in actuality that person is the source for the advancement of society itself.
12. What attitude does Michael Walzer have to individualists in his book
A. Optimistic. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Positive.
13. Why are Bill Gates and Edison more creative according to the author
A. They don’t follow the traditional ideas.
B. They are more constructive to the society.
C. They are more likely to stick to old ideas.
D. They dislike the main stream society.
14. What can be inferred from paragraph 3
A. Individualists make the majority of groups.
B. Most group members are usually creative.
C. The life of a group lies with individualists.
D. Individualists should be removed from groups.
15. What’s the purpose of the passage
A. To call on people to contribute to the society
B. To stress the importance of individualists
C. To criticize the individualists
D. To tell the difference between individualists and groups

It was the first day of our new grade. Everyone in the classroom was chatting happily, excited to see each other again after the long holidays. When the door slid open, all of us stopped talking and turned to look. In came our teacher Ms. Sullivan, followed by an ordinary-looking boy,
“This boy’s name is Rafael.” Ms, Sullivan announced.“He’s a transfer student(转校生), and he’s going to be in our class starting from today. Make sure all of you welcome him warmly.”
The class clapped. But I didn't want to have a second look at the newcomer, for he had no outstanding qualities considering his small figure and casual T-shirt.
“Oh, I forgot to mention one thing.” Ms Sullivan spoke up. “Rafael actually has hearing problems. Normally he would have hearing aids on, but his old ones have just been broken. His doctor suggested that he stay at home until he got his new ones. However, Rafael insisted on attending his first day of school. So if you want to communicate with him, you have to write it on a piece of paper.”
This single speech sent the whole class up into an uproar (嘈杂). Some students looked at each other with expressions of surprise. Others voiced cries of concern out of pity.
Ms Sullivan calmed everyone down. “I’d like someone to personally help him out throughout the day. Do I have any volunteers ”
“How can a disabled person be intelligent ”I thought to myself. I refused to raise my hand, expecting someone else would. But nobody did or said anything. Dead silence spread across the classroom.
It was by total bad luck that my eyes happened to meet Ms. Sullivan's.
“How about you, James ”She asked me. “Is it okay for you to take care of Rafael just for today ”
It is difficult to refuse a request by someone, especially if that person is a teacher. I sighed and nodded slightly. Ms. Sullivan gestured for Rafael to sit beside me and then asked us to share our holiday stories with the class.

第三部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
Dear Mark,
How are you these days Recently, I’ve done some research on Chinese characters. As a unique part of Chinese culture, they have a long history and various ways of creating new characters and expressing plentiful meanings. Here I’d like to introduce my favourite Chinese character to you.
It is the character “想” that I am talking about, which consists of two parts. “相” is the sound element, while “心” indicates “thought” and “emotion”. In addition to the structure of the character, what attracts me most is its abundant meanings such as “missing”, “thought” and “imagination”, enabling people to express different meanings appropriately according to the contexts. So having a good command of Chinese characters can help you understand Chinese culture profoundly.
If you have any interest in knowing more about Chinese characters, just let me know.
Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Immediately, the class became excited. Some could hardly wait to tell their seatmates about their holiday trips, eyes shining and faces glowing with joy. Those who hadn’t been anywhere bombarded them with inquiring questions. Enormous exultation welled up in every corner of the classroom. Obviously bewildered at the sudden commotion around, Rafael turned to me for reasons in written words. Surprisingly, my explanation put a smile on his face. “Any volunteer to share your story ” asked Ms. Sullivan, whose words I set down on paper for Rafael. [85 words]
Paragraph 2:
Then Rafael rose and walked onto the platform. Greeting us with a confident smile, Rafael shared his story in a magnetic voice, which left me stunned. I felt more ashamed to learn that he ran a website to help children with hearing problems than guilty about stupidly thinking disabled people couldn’t be intelligent. Then his voice was lost in a thunderous outburst of applause. Feeling a lump in the throat, I clapped my hands even more loudly, determined never to judge a book by its cover. [78 words]
