Han Tianheng picked up a carving tool at the age of 6 and never put it down.Today, the 79 year old artist, one of China's most respected living masters of seal carving (印章雕刻),calligraphy and Chinese painting, still remembers the incident — the first time he held a knife in his hand.
“I cut my thumb badly and was horrified by the bloody sight,”he said, adding that his mother applied ashes because she couldn't afford to take him to a hospital.“The cut left a scar, which is still clear today.”
However, the incident didn't set him back.Instead, it aroused his passion for the ancient art form.He was determined to pursue a path that would lead to a career in seal carving.
The journey of art exploration was a little bumpy (颠簸的) for then the young man in his quest for excellence, and his seal works were harshly criticized by a famous old painter.
Most people would have been crushed by the criticism, not Han.It made him even more determined. After six months' hard work, he visited the painter again.
“That time, he asked me to carve a seal for him. That was positive affirmation,”Han said,“Praise and criticism are what an artist should learn to handle all his life.Praise is candy and criticism is medicine. We can live without candy, but cannot live without medicine when ill.”
Han rose to fame during the early 1960s, famous for bird and insect seal art.Han's seals are an essential ending part on the paintings of a long list of established artists.
“A seal for a good painting is like the buttons for haute couture (高档女子时装).An experienced tailor always knows how to choose buttons that match the whole style,” Han said.
His seals are full of variety — the grand and solemn style for Liu Haisu's paintings, the light and vivid style for Lu Yanshao's,and the graceful and gentle style for Xie Zhiliu's.
“A good seal carver should keep his own style, and at the same time go well with the painting's style,” he said.

Wearing a headset to play a virtual reality game is fun.As you move your head around, you can see the scene from different angles. You're in a fake environment that seems so real. But the power of VR may go well beyond entertainment. It just might help people who suffer from long time of pain, a new study finds.
“If VR can reduce some types of pain, it could become a new cure with fewer side effects than drugs,”says Sam Hughes, a psychologist at Imperial College London.“And it would be less expensive.”
Hughes' group studies bone and muscle pain. One example is sciatica.Sciatica is a form of pain doctors call chronic pain, which is different from the hurt you feel when you hit your knee against a table or put your hand in very hot water. It is fairly long lived pain and may even spread from an initial site to other body parts.
The researchers tested the pain altering effect of virtual reality. Each volunteer accepted some form of temporary pain. The pain came from a special cream applied to the skin. The cream contained capsaicin. It's the chemical in hot peppers that burns your mouth.
They then showed the volunteers a movie. Each volunteer would see the movie twice — once in 3 D, while wearing a VR headset, and once on a normal 2 D screen. The researchers randomly decided for each volunteer whether they watched the 2 D or 3 D version first.Using the 2 D movie as the comparison allowed them to isolate the effect of VR.Watching the movie in VR reduced the pain in the skin area better than did viewing the movie in 2 D.VR helped them tolerate more pain in the area of the creamed skin. However, that pain reduction ended a few minutes after removing the VR headsets. The researchers wondered how well VR might reduce other types of pain.

7.Why was the special cream used in the experiment
A.To find chemicals in hot peppers.
B.To bring comfort to volunteers.
C.To burn the volunteers' mouth.
D.To cause some temporary pain.

8.How was the test carried out
A.By giving numbers.
B.By using examples.
C.By making a comparison.
D.By presenting research findings.

Rick Guidotti put aside his career as a fashioned photographer to turn his lens (镜头) to people living with genetic, physical and behavioral differences.
He says what changed his perception of beauty was a chance encounter with an albino (患白化病的) girl.“I was just tired of people telling me who was beautiful.Every season that face would change but I was always told who was beautiful. As an artist, I don't see beauty just on covers of magazines.I see it everywhere. So that kind of was my initial kind of — that opened my eyes a little wider and wider.”
Guidotti has created Positive Exposure, a not for profit organization that uses photography and video to transform public perceptions and promote a world where differences are celebrated.Guidotti and Positive Exposure are featured in a new documentary called On Beauty.
One of the women featured in the film is Jayne Waithera.“I never thought I was beautiful because nobody said that to me, but my meeting him was my profound moment.I remembered that particular day.He took my picture and I felt so good like I felt there's somebody who really, loves me and sees me for who I am and who sees me more than my condition.” said Waithera.
Rick is traveling from city to city to promote On Beauty. He says his tour is not about money, it's about the message:“As I travel from community to community, I'm taking photographs and I'm empowering individuals with a positive sense of who they are. They're seeing beauty in their reflection but I'm also empowering their families and they in turn are empowering their communities as well. All is based on the philosophy of change—how you see, see how you change.”

Samuel Osmond is a 19 year old law student from Cornwall, England. He never studied the piano. However, he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them.He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes(音符) in his head. Two years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata (奏鸣曲) by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him.
Amazed that he remembered this long and difficult piece of music and played it perfectly, his teachers say Samuel is unbelievable. They say his ability is very rare, but Samuel doesn't even realise that what he can do is special.Samuel wanted to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music.
Samuel can't understand why everyone is so surprised.“I grew up with music. My mother played the piano and my father played the guitar.About two years ago, I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons. It comes easily to me — I hear the notes and can bear them in mind—each and every note,” says Samuel.
Recently, Samuel performed a piece during a special event at his college. The piece had more than a thousand notes. The audience was impressed by his amazing performance. He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many professional pianists can't play it.Samuel says confidently, “It's all about super memory — I guess I have that gift.”
However, Samuel's ability to remember things doesn't stop with music. His family says that even when he was a young boy, Samuel heard someone read a story, and then he could retell the story word for word.
Samuel is still only a teenager. He doesn't know what he wants to do in the future. For now, he is just happy to play beautiful music and continue his studies.

La Belle Personne is boring, but I love it.The 2008 French film features extremely softened and washed out colors,a relatively uneventful plotline, and lifeless performances from the main characters, all of which give the film its unique charm.
The plain beauty of La Belle Personne comes not from its extremely unique plot, but rather its literary elements.Of course, the film is visually pretty lacking in liveliness. An editor must have purposely and smartly dealt with every single shot. The dominating colors in each of these shots are a vivid black, grey and white, making for a melancholic(忧郁的) atmosphere. While one could easily view this lack of vividness as exhausting,I would argue that it makes for a beautifully unconventional cinematic experience.
There are no artificial mental spark stimulated by the visuals, and the viewers must therefore sit with themselves for an hour and a half, reflecting on what the piece personally means to them and how it genuinely makes them feel.Aside from a few major plot points, nothing terribly remarkable happens in La Belle Personne. It's more like a lazy river under grey skies where the water is slightly too cold. But if you relax, your body temperature adjusts and you can sit back and just enjoy the ride.
Although our current world may be both literally and symbolically on fire,it's no secret that campus life in and of itself is considerably more boring than usual. With no parties to attend, most classes online, and the majority of clubs limited to Zoom Meetings, waking up every day might feel a bit more tedious. However, just like La Belle Personne has shown us,it's important to appreciate your environment for what it is.In terms of campus life, sometimes it's not so horrible for things to be slow paced,as it allows space for reflection and being present.

5.What do we know about La Belle Personne from the first paragraph
A.It enjoys high popularity.
B.It owns special artistic charm.
C.It applies modern techniques.
D.It features lively performances.
6.What can we infer from Paragraphs 2 and 3 about the film
A.All its viewers feel positive on it.
B.It gives viewers a sense of ridiculousness.
C.It suits those preferring sensory stimulation.
D.It is worth tasting slowly and heart wholly.
7.What does underlined word “tedious” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Boring. B.Painstaking.

8.What is the purpose of this text
A.To show the importance of going to the movies.
B.To recommend people to enjoy an unique movie.

The Underwater Photographer of the Year, which originated from 1965, is a yearly contest based in the United Kingdom. As you might expect, the focus is on photos taken underwater, whether in the ocean, in lakes or rivers, or even swimming pools.
The pictures are judged in several different categories. The contest in 2020 had over 5,500 entries from 70 different countries.
The grand prize winner was “Frozen Mobile Home” by French photographer Greg Lecoeur. The photo shows seals swimming around a small iceberg. To get the picture,Mr Lecoeur traveled to Antarctica in a small boat and spent time tracking the life around floating icebergs.
The photo “Last Dawn, Last Gasp” by Pasquale Vassallo of Italy won the award for Ocean Protection Photographer of the Year.Mr Vassallo said that he went diving early in the morning to take this picture of a tuna (金枪鱼) trapped as fishermen pulled their nets in.
Mr Vassallo also took “Octopus Training”,a picture that won in the category of “Behavior”.He says that when he came up after a dive, he noticed a soccer ball floating on the surface. When he went to check it out, he saw that there was an octopus hanging from the ball.Mr Vassallo says he doesn't understand what the octopus was doing, but wonders if it was training for the World Cup.
Though Rooman Luc of Belgium didn't win the “Portrait” category, his photo, titled “Angry Seahorse”, is quite striking. The close up shot of a seahorse staring strictly into the camera was named runner up (second place). He said he spent nearly an hour standing in knee high water being bitten by mosquitos in order to get the picture.
The contest has many more amazing photos that can be viewed on the site, along with the stories behind them. There is even a book with all of the contents that can be downloaded for free.

How affordable is high culture One great myth (错误观念) of our time is that tickets for opera, theatre, ballets and orchestral(管弦乐的) concerts are too expensive, especially for the young. This is infuriating as, in Britain, at least, the claim is ridiculous and offensive. The cheap tickets to hear London's orchestras range from £7 to £9 —the same as a cinema ticket, and lower than the entry price to many pop music and comedy clubs. For comparison, when the Los Angeles Philharmonic performs with top soloists and conductors the cheapest seat is £30;and at the Berlin Philharmonic it's an expensive £46.
Finding cheap tickets to the opera and ballet isn't so easy.Actually, British companies don't charge the ridiculously high prices found on the Continent (£2,000 for a good seat at the premiere of La Scala's Carmen last December), but the tickets are still pretty steep.Large fees paid to star performers mostly account for that.Luckily, however, one spectacular technological innovation has transformed the scene. It's live cinema transmissions (节目播送).The Metropolitan Opera in New York now beams its shows to 800 cinemas round the world, and British companies aren't far behind.Cinematic opera is excellent value. For the cost of a good bottle of wine (£10 or £15 for the Royal Opera House's shows), you can sit in your local movie house and see a high definition relay of what's occurring on the world's grandest stages. No, it's not the same as being there, but it's almost as good. The sound is incredible. The images of dancers are fantastic. And you can react to the show as part of a live audience, rather than sitting on your own at home.
To me, a mountain of evidence, together with free museum admission, indicates that the arts world should stop worrying that its audiences are still mostly middle class.Anyone who can afford to visit a pub can also afford to see top quality drama, music and dance. The real battle now should be ensuring that schoolchildren are given enough tastes of high culture to make them want to buy all those cheap tickets when they grow up.

6.What is the main reason for expensive opera tickets
A.The amount of money charged by top performers.
B.The costly technology required for broadcasting.
C.The demand of companies for big profits.
D.The high cost of renting the stages.
解析:选A 细节理解题。根据第二段中的Large fees paid to star performers mostly account for that.可知,歌剧票价高的主要原因是最优秀的表演者要价高。
7.Which of the following is TRUE about cinematic opera
A.People can decide where to watch the opera.
B.Audiences are discouraged from responding to the performances.
C.It provides an inexpensive way of enjoying a live opera performance.
D.The sound and visual quality are superior to the live performance.
8.Which statement would the author agree with
A.The quality of opera performances is improving.
B.High culture is becoming more affordable in Europe.
C.The cost of access to high culture activities should be lowered.
D.Children should be encouraged to participate in high culture events.
解析:选D 推理判断题。根据第三段最后一句可知,现在真正的斗争应该是确保小学生得到足够的高雅文化的熏陶,以使他们长大后想买所有那些便宜的票。

To me, a mountain of evidence, together with free museum admission, indicates that the arts world should stop worrying that its audiences are still mostly middle class.Anyone who can afford to visit a pub can also afford to see top quality drama, music and dance. The real battle now should be ensuring that schoolchildren are given enough tastes of high culture to make them want to buy all those cheap tickets when they grow up.

The shadow play is a typical traditional entertainment that has survived and thrived over the centuries. It is taken as an earliest ancestor of modern cinema.
Legend has it that more than 2,000 years ago, Emperor Wu of Western Han was very depressed about the death of his favorite concubine (妃子).To help him get over his sadness, a minister made a puppet out of cotton and silk in the likeness of the concubine and projected its shadow on a curtain for the emperor to see.The show brought the emperor some comfort. He somehow believed the shadow was his lover's spirit. This is thought to be the beginning of the shadow play.
One mouth tells stories of thousands of years;a pair of hands operate millions of soldiers. This is how the shadow puppeteer works.Nicknamed “the business of the five”,a shadow play group is made up of five people. One operates the puppets, one plays a suona and a yueqin, one plays the banhu, one is in charge of percussion (打击乐器) instruments, and one sings.
During performances, “actors” are held close to a white curtain with their colored shadows cast on it by a strong light from behind. The operator plays five puppets at the same time, each of which has three threads.Ten fingers handle fifteen threads.Moved by guiding sticks, the puppets play roles with musical accompaniment. The popularity of the shadow play in some way lies in the equipment being light and easy to carry, the small number of people needed for a performance, and the flexible requirements for performance places. The plays can be quite dramatic and when it comes to myths or kung fu stories, the “actors” may be made to ride on clouds or perform unusual feats, to the great enjoyment of the audience, especially children.
The design of the figures follows traditional moral evaluation. The audience can tell a figure's character by seeing his mask.Like the masks in Beijing opera, a red mask represents loyalty and bravery, a black mask, integrity (正直)and selflessness, and a white one, wickedness and betrayal.
Nowadays, the shadow play has been industrialized and developed a series of tourist products for the promotion of Chinese culture and tourism.

There was a light on at Miss Parson's house, but there were no ghosts, goblins (小妖精),or Jack o' lanterns. We climbed up the steps and saw Miss Parson through a window. She was drinking a cup of hot tea.
“Maybe she doesn't celebrate Halloween,” Kate said with a sigh, disappointedly.
